The shift of the Muslim brotherhood's ideology : from 25 January to the achievement of the presidency
2016
Since the revolts in Egypt broke out three years ago, on 25 January 2011, the Egyptian political landscape is still changing. Whilst Hosni Mubarak was overthrown by the popular uprising in Tahrir Square, regular and fair political elections took place in the country (both parliamentary and presidential), which ratified the Muslim Brotherhood’s success. After less than a year in power, Muhammad Morsi was also overthrown by amilitary coup supported by millions of Egyptians. Abd el-Fattah al-Sisi is the new president of the country. The Brotherhood, founded in 1928 by Hasan al-Banna, is today depicted as a terrorist organization, politically sidelined and entirely excluded from the country’s d…
Salafiti e salafismo: religione e politica nell’Islam
2018
A Stepwise Proposal for Low-Grade Hemorrhoidal Disease: Injection Sclerotherapy as a First-Line Treatment and Rubber Band Ligation for Persistent Rel…
2022
Outpatient treatments are actually the techniques of choice in the management of low-grade hemorrhoidal disease. Among these, rubber band ligation (RBL) and injection sclerotherapy (IS) are the most frequently performed. Both techniques are used, without one having been determined to be superior over the other. We analyzed the studies that compare these two techniques in terms of efficacy and safety in order to offer a proposal for treatment choice. RBL seems to be most efficient in terms of symptom resolution for second-degree hemorrhoidal disease and equal or superior for treatment of third-degree disease. However, IS offers lower rates of severe post-operative pain and minor complication…
Chemical characterisation of the gases released at Gyali Island, Dodecanese, Greece and preliminary estimation of the CO2 output
2021
Greece belongs to the most geodynamically active regions of the world and as such, it has to be considered an area of intense geogenic degassing. In terms of carbon, the territory is characterized by the high hydrothermal and volcanic activity of the South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc (SAAVA), and by widespread geological seeps of buried carbon dioxide and methane. In the present work, we investigate the island of Gyali located in the volcanic system Kos-Gyali-Nisyros. Nine gas samples have been collected on the island of Gyali in areas found both on land, in a small lake (∼2000 m2) along its beach, and in the sea close to the shore at shallow depths (<20 m). Results show that CO2 is the p…
The genesis of actively growing siliceous stromatolites: Evidence from Lake Specchio di Venere, Pantelleria Island, Italy
2010
This study documents the attributes of siliceous stromatolites growing in the Lake Specchio di Venere, on the volcanic island of Pantelleria, Italy, in a setting characterized by very shallow cold waters and pools and by scattered hydrothermal activity, which exhales mainly CO2, at emission point temperatures of 34 to 58 °C. The saturation indexes indicate that the lake waters are saturated with respect to tridymite, cristobalite, chalcedony and quartz, and slightly undersaturated with respect to amorphous silica. Common roughly laminated and poorly lithified stromatolites show scanning electron microscope (SEM) evidence for silicified microbial mat structures, including biofilms, filamento…
Molecular Biomineralization: Toward an Understanding of the Biogenic Origin of Polymetallic Nodules, Seamount Crusts, and Hydrothermal Vents
2011
Polymetallic nodules and crusts, hydrothermal vents from the Deep Sea are economically interesting, since they contain alloying components, e.g., manganese or cobalt, that are used in the production of special steels; in addition, they contain rare metals applied for plasma screens, for magnets in hard disks, or in hybrid car motors. While hydrothermal vents can regenerate in weeks, polymetallic nodules and seamount crusts grow slowly. Even though the geochemical basis for the growth of the nodules and crusts has been well studied, the contribution of microorganisms to the formation of these minerals remained obscure. Recent HR-SEM (high-resolution scanning electron microscopy) analyses of …
On the different growth conditions affecting silver antimicrobial efficacy on Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica.
2012
Abstract Silver is known to inhibit microorganisms and therefore it is an ideal candidate for its incorporation in a wide variety of materials for food applications. However, there is still a need for understanding how silver prolonged exposure to bacterial contamination affects the bioavailability of the active silver species. In the present study, growth curves of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica were performed for 3–5 days in Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB) and M9 minimal medium (M9) in the presence of silver ions and silver solutions previously in contact with the growth media. The cultivability of the bacteria under these conditions was correlated with the viability of the bacter…
Synthesis and optical characterization of Er-doped bismuth titanate nanoparticles grown by sol-gel hydrothermal method
2017
Abstract The Er 3+ -doped bismuth titanate (Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 , BIT) nanoparticles were synthesized by a combined sol–gel and hydrothermal method under a partial oxygen pressure of 30 bar. The composition and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman scattering. They showed pure and homogeneous spherical BIT nanoparticles with a size below the 30 nm. The incorporation of Er ions showed a strong decrease in the lattice parameters, as well as averaged particle size. The photoluminescence up-conversion (excitation wavelength =1480 nm) showed an enhancement of the infrared emission (980 nm) as Er concentration increased, achieving a maxi…
Changes in fluid geochemistry and physico-chemical conditions of geothermal systems caused by magmatic input: The recent abrupt outgassing off the is…
2005
Abstract Hydrothermal systems and related vents can exhibit dramatic changes in their physico-chemical conditions over time as a response to varying activity in the feeding magmatic systems. Massive steam condensation and gas scrubbing processes of thermal fluids during their ascent and cooling cause further compositional changes that mask information regarding the conditions evolving at depth in the hydrothermal system. Here we propose a new stability diagram based on the CO2-CH4-CO-H2 concentrations in vapor, which aims at calculating the temperatures and pressures in hydrothermal reservoirs. To filter gas scrubbing effects, we have also developed a model for selective dissolution of CO2-…
