Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin attack on human platelets promotes assembly of the prothrombinase complex.
1990
alpha-Toxin, the major cytolysin of Staphylococcus aureus, promotes blood coagulation by its attack on human platelets (Bhakdi S., Muhly, M., Mannhardt, U., Hugo, F., Klapettek, K., Mueller-Eckhardt, C., and Roka, L. (1988) J. Exp. Med. 168, 527-542). In the present study we demonstrate that toxin attack on gel-filtered human platelets initiates the assembly of prothrombinase complexes at rates up to 10-fold of controls. Treatment of platelets with 0.1 microgram/ml alpha-toxin resulted in generation of 1.4 units of thrombin/10(8) platelets. A similar rate of thrombin generation was noted when platelets were subjected to three cycles of freezing and thawing. However, the alpha-toxin-induced …
The geochemistry of Tl and its isotopes during magmatic and hydrothermal processes: The peralkaline Ilimaussaq complex, southwest Greenland
2014
Abstract We use thallium (Tl) concentrations, K/Rb, K/Tl and Rb/Tl ratios and Tl isotopes in minerals from the alkaline to peralkaline Ilimaussaq complex (South Greenland) to trace magmatic differentiation, crustal assimilation, magmatic degassing, ore precipitation and hydrothermal metasomatism. Closed-system magmatic differentiation is marked by a coherent decrease of K/Tl- and K/Rb-ratios, whereas crustal assimilation results in a strong Tl-enrichment, causing low K/Tl-ratios compared to K/Rb-ratios. Thallium isotopes show only slight changes during orthomagmatic differentiation and the assimilation of crustal material cannot be traced, since the isotopic composition of the average crust…
The microstructural variability of the intercentra among temnospondyl amphibians
2014
The histology of the vertebral centrum of the morphologically diverse Temnospondyli is poorly known. In this study, the variability of the histological framework of various taxa from several Permian and Triassic localities was investigated for the first time. Twelve intercentra, forming the anterior part of the diplospondylous centra of temnospondyls, were examined histologically. The intercentra of all studied taxa share a highly vascularized cortex on the ventro-lateral side and primary and secondary trabecular, endochondral bone on the dorsal side. A high variability is present, among others, within the arrangement of the vascular cavities, the density of the trabeculae and the distribut…
The tongue biofilm metatranscriptome identifies metabolic pathways associated with halitosis and its prevention
2021
AbstractHalitosis is an oral condition caused by an increase in the concentration of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), such as methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide, generated as a consequence of bacterial metabolism on the tongue biofilm. Microbial communities on the tongue of halitosis patients have been studied by bacterial culture, 16S rRNA taxonomic studies and metagenomics. However, there are currently no reports on the microbial gene-expression profiles. In this study, we performed RNAseq of tongue coating samples from control individuals and halitosis patients with different levels and composition of VSCs, as determined by gas chromatography. In this metatranscriptomic study, the ac…

Environmental and Energy Analysis of Two Orchard Systems: A Case Study in Mediterranean Environment
2022
This paper aimed to analyse and compare the environmental and energy sustainability of two orchards (peach versus kiwifruit) located in Southern Italy using Life Cycle Thinking. To this end, anthropogenic energy, CO2 emissions, biogenic energy and carbon gains were also considered through Life Cycle Assessment methodology and Energy Analysis. The C–CO2 balance was calculated as the difference between total C–CO2 stored in soil and trees, at the end of their life cycles, and orchards Carbon Footprint (CF). The results showed that the production of 1 kg of peaches caused minor impacts, especially with reference to CF (0.124 kg CO2 eq against 0.145 for kiwifruit), while it required 1.56 MJ of …
Microthermometry of fluid inclusions in calcite from Fuerteventura carbonatites: composition and formation conditions
2022
The petrographic analysis in calcite minerals in carbonatitic dykes from Fuerteventura Basal Complex (Ajuy, Punta de la Nao) shows the presence of isolated primary fluid inclusions, corroborating their magmatic origin instead of a late-stage origin. Micro-thermometric studies in calcite show a restricted range of apparent eutectic temperature (Te*= -21.7 – -21.0 °C) and final ice melting temperatures (Tim= -3.2 – -2.1. °C). Homogenization temperatures and pressures are in the range of 140-210 °C and 4-16 bars respectively. Our results suggest the binary NaCl-H2O system as a characterizing chemical system in studied fluid inclusions, with the presence of low salinity fluids (≈ 5 wt. % NaCleq…
