Throughout the twenty volumes of his monumental novel series, Emile Zola carefully chose his characters’ family names and given names, looking for clues in authentic documents or inventing some new anthroponyms himself. The main principle of the relation between a character and his/her family name is the name’s meaning and the symbolical significance hidden in its phonetic and semantic structure. As far as the given names are concerned, their choice usually seems to be determined by irony, the writer’s favorite literary technique.

This relationship, which may be true or false, is based on diverse principles and is likely to appear as well inside a group of people as between two persons - two men, two women or a man and a woman. Sometimes it turns into a love alliance, and sometimes it disappears completely, but it is always considered as a crucial part of the diegesis.

In naturalist novels, aiming to depict the reality as faithfully as possible, colours are particularly important, and need to be carefully selected. An attentive reader of Zola’s Rougon-Macquart series might notice a very special use of colours that are often charged with an important symbolic value: being not only an ornament or a detail, they frequently influence and/or express the characters’ features. The proposed classification shows some most relevant examples of Zola’s conception of colours in selected parts of the series.

Artykuł analizuje dwie formy, jakie przybiera motyw drzewa w cyklu powieściowym Émile’a Zoli Rougon-Macquartowie. Pierwszą z nich, którą można nazwać „społeczną”, jest drzewo genealogiczne postaci tworzących powieściową rodzinę; sporządzenie tego drzewa i przygotowanie szczegółowych informacji na temat każdego bohatera i jego losów poprzedziło rozpoczęcie pracy nad cyklem, co czyni z niego rodzaj pra-struktury całej serii. Drugą formą, w jakiej drzewo pojawia się w analizowanych tekstach, jest forma „naturalna”, związana z przyrodą (drzewo jako roślina) i nasycona symboliką dotykającą miłości i płodności.
