Current and Voltage Behaviour During a Fault in a HV/MV System: Methods and Measurements

2015

When a single line to ground fault happens on the MV side of a HV/MV system, only a small portion of the fault current is injected into the ground by the ground-grid of the faulty substation. In fact the fault current is distributed between grounding electrodes and MV cables sheaths. In systems with isolated neutral or with resonant earthing this may be sufficient to provide safety from electric shock. Experimental measurements were performed on a real MV distribution network: a real single line to ground fault was made and fault currents were measured in the faulty substation and in four neighbouring substations. In this paper the problem of fault current distribution is introduced, the te…

Influence of LV neutral grounding on global earthing systems

2015

International Standards define a Global Earthing System as an earthing net created interconnecting local Earthing Systems (generally through the shield of MV cables and/or bare buried conductors). In Italy, the regulatory authority for electricity and gas requires distributors to guarantee the electrical continuity of LV neutral conductor. This requirement has led to the standard practice of realizing “reinforcement groundings” along the LV neutral conductor path and at users’ delivery cabinet. Moreover, in urban high-load scenarios (prime candidates to be part of a Global Earthing System), it is common that LV distribution scheme creates, through neutral conductors, an effective connection…

Fall of Potential Measurement of the Earth Resistance in Urban Environments: Accuracy Evaluation

2019

Both Standards EN 50522 and IEEE 81 propose the fall of potential method (FPM) to carry out the measurement of the resistance to earth ( $R_{\text{ES}}$ ) of an earthing system (ES). However, in urban areas, the recommended distances between the ES and auxiliary electrodes are not easy to respect, due to the presence of buildings and tarmac. Furthermore, unknown buried metallic parts and interconnections among ESs could modify the earth potential profile of the area, affecting the measurement results. In this paper, the key-issues that influence the measured $R_{\text{ES}}$ when the FPM is used in an urban environment are presented. A parametric analysis, carried out with Comsol Multiphysic…

On the Influence of the Radius Between Face and Flank on the Tool Life of Sintered Carbides

1985

Experimental investigations carried out by the authors in interrupted cutting, show that if the cutting edge survives to few impacts, then fracture will take place to very high number of impacts. Early fractures can be explained by assuming the presence of microscopic defects on the tool edge; a longer life can be referred to an increase tool strengthness due to rounding of the edge as a consequence of the wear process. In order to study the effects of the rounding of the edge, experimental tests have been carried out on several inserts of sintered carbides with different values of the radius of the edge between face and flank obtained by a tumbling process. The results show that the greate…

A dynamic program analysis to find floating-point accuracy problems

2012

Programs using floating-point arithmetic are prone to accuracy problems caused by rounding and catastrophic cancellation. These phenomena provoke bugs that are notoriously hard to track down: the program does not necessarily crash and the results are not necessarily obviously wrong, but often subtly inaccurate. Further use of these values can lead to catastrophic errors. In this paper, we present a dynamic program analysis that supports the programmer in finding accuracy problems. Our analysis uses binary translation to perform every floating-point computation side by side in higher precision. Furthermore, we use a lightweight slicing approach to track the evolution of errors. We evaluate our…

DSP Implementation for Measuring the Loop Gain Frequency Response of Digitally Controlled Power Converters

2012

This paper presents a method for measuring the loop gain frequency response of digitally controlled power converters, without the need of any expensive measurement equipment such as frequency response analyzers (FRA). The method is based on the traditional perturbation and measurement scheme. The perturbation is internally synthesized by the DSP and applied as pulse-width modulation to the converter. The loop input and output data are sent to a PC via universal serial bus, which performs online the DFT of sent data. The perturbation amplitude is varied with frequency to improve signal-to-noise ratio of measurements. The number of cycles used to perform discrete Fourier transform calculation…

Modeling of the process of moisture loss during the storage of dried apricots

2011

[EN] Moisture content is a reference parameter for dried food because the growth of most microorganisms is inhibited below certain water activity levels. In addition, it has a determining influence on the evolution of important parameters, such as color and flavor, and on other properties and deterioration reactions, such as texture, oxidation processes and nutritional value. During the storage of some dried fruits, moisture is produced due to Maillard reactions and exchanged with the surrounding environment through the packaging. The evolution of dried foods during their shelf life depends on the storage conditions. The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of the moisture content …

Interconnections criteria of grounding grids in global grounding systems

2018

A Global Grounding System is defined as the combination of local grounding systems, obtained by their interconnection, which ensures, thanks to their proximity, that no dangerous touch voltages can arise. The interconnection of grounding systems via the armors of the MV cables, between secondary substations and HV/MV stations is herein analyzed to verify the effects on touch voltages in ground-fault conditions. In particular, two main issues are discussed: 1) the transfer of dangerous voltages to secondary substations, due to ground-faults occurring at the HV/MV station; 2) the reduction in the magnitude of the ground potential rise due to ground-fault conditions at secondary substations, t…

A study on the use of bare buried conductors in an extended interconnection of earthing systems inside a MV network

2005

In the field of electrical safety an important topic is the transmission of voltages, during an earth fault, inside an extended interconnection of local earthing systems. The paper presents a study, with reference to the MV networks, about those systems where the interconnection between the earth electrodes of the electrical installations is carried out using bare buried conductors. Starting from the description of the circuital model of a bare buried conductor interconnecting together the earth electrodes of two MV/lv substations, the mathematical model of the whole interconnected earthing system is found. Finally, the results of some simulations, giving the distribution of the fault curre…

Student-initiated multi-unit questions in EMI classrooms

2021

This conversation analytic study investigates student-initiated multi-unit questions (MUQs) in whole class interaction. Based on a corpus of 30 hours of videotaped interactions from teacher education classrooms in an English-medium instruction university, we demonstrate that students use MUQs to introduce topics, either by recontextualizing some aspect of the prior topic, or alternatively, without these cohesive ties, which requires more interactional work to achieve intersubjectivity. Findings reveal that MUQs render student professional concerns more relevant and salient, foregrounding those inquiries as a space for launching topics. Students bring up issues such as ways of handling parti…
