Aqueous Humor Levels of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Retinitis Pigmentosa

2008

PURPOSE To determine the level of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) in aqueous humors of patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHODS A prospective, comparative control study. Aqueous humor was collected from 16 eyes of 16 patients with RP. The level of VEGF-A was determined with a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The control group comprised 16 aqueous samples from 16 patients about to undergo cataract surgery and without any other ocular or systemic diseases. RESULTS The concentration of VEGF-A in aqueous humor was markedly lower in patients with RP than in control subjects (Mann-Whitney U test, P < 0.001). The level of VEGF-A was 94.9 +/- 99.8 …

Elevated protein carbonyl and HIF-1α levels in eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

2013

Purpose: To evaluate the role of protein carbonyls and hypoxia inducible factor-1a (HIF-1a) in diabetic eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Methods: Prospective consecutive controlled observational study was performed. Vitreous samples were collected at the start of the 3-ppp vitrectomy. Protein carbonylation analysis was performed by Western blotting with antibody against 2,4-Dinitrophenol (anti-DNP), following derivatization of protein carbonyls with 2,4 Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNHP). Protein carbonylation was quantified by scanning densitometry analysis and relativized to the total amount of protein into the ponceau staining of membranes. Vitreous HIF-1 a was determined w…

Impact of Heavy Polypropylene Mesh and Composite Light Polypropylene and Polyglactin 910 on the Inflammatory Response

2010

The aim of the study was to analyze the acute inflammatory response after implantation of a heavyweight mesh of polypropylene (PP) compared with a composite mesh of light PP and polyglactin 910 (PG) in patients undergoing inguinal hernioplasty. A total of 30 male patients with inguinal hernia were included in the study and divided into 2 groups (PP and PP-PG) according to the mesh used. Changes of leukocytes, cytokines, growth factors, and acute phase proteins were evaluated in the sera. Leukocytes and acute phase proteins were significantly increased postoperatively in both groups, and the values were slightly higher in the PP group. Cytokine levels were significantly increased postoperat…

Did you see that? Dissociating advanced visual information and ball flight constrains perception and action processes during one-handed catching

2013

The integration of separate, yet complimentary, cortical pathways appears to play a role in visual perception and action when intercepting objects. The ventral system is responsible for object recognition and identification, while the dorsal system facilitates continuous regulation of action. This dual-system model implies that empirically manipulating different visual information sources during performance of an interceptive action might lead to the emergence of distinct gaze and movement pattern profiles. To test this idea, we recorded hand kinematics and eye movements of participants as they attempted to catch balls projected from a novel apparatus that synchronised or de-synchronised ac…

CD146+ bone marrow osteoprogenitors increase in the advanced stages of primary myelofibrosis

2008

Abstract CD146+ bone marrow stromal cells have been recently recognized as clonogenic osteoprogenitors able to organize a complete hematopoietic microenvironment. In this study we used immunohistochemical analysis to investigate the contribution of CD146+ bone marrow osteoprogenitors to the stromal remodeling occurring in the different stages of primary myelofibrosis. We found that CD146+ cells sited at the abluminal side of the bone marrow vessels and branching among hematopoietic cells significantly increased in the advanced stages of primary myelofibrosis (p<0.001), paralleling the extent of fibrosis (r=0.916, p<0.0001) and the microvascular density (r=0.883, p<0.0001). Coherently with a…

Immunophenotypical comparison of Gaucher's and pseudo-Gaucher cells.

1996

An immunohistochemical study on bone marrow biopsies and spleens of patients with Gaucher's disease and chronic myeloid leukemia was performed to investigate the immunophenotype of Gaucher's cells and pseudo-Gaucher cells. A panel of antibodies was used which were reactive on paraffin-embedded tissues and directed against different hematopoietic lineage cells. Gaucher's cells and pseudo-Gaucher cells expressed a very similar immunophenotype and displayed an intense reaction for the monocytic antibodies tested, thus confirming their common origin and that they belong to the same system. The expression of HLA-DR antigens was much stronger in Gaucher's than in pseudo-Gaucher cells. This last f…

Study of pituitary secretion in relation to retinopathy in patients with juvenile diabetes mellitus.

1981

Fifteen juvenile diabetic patients with normal eye fundus, 6 with non proliferative retinopathy, 5 with proliferative retinopathy and 5 healthy control subjects were studied in order to investigate pituitary function in relation to diabetic retinopathy. ACTH values at 08(00) and 18(00), hPRL and TSh secretion in response to 200 microgram TRH i.v., and GH secretion in response to 500 mg oral L-dopa were evaluated. In all diabetic subjects, 08(00) ACTH levels were lower than in controls. Basal hPRL, TSH and GH values of the diabetics did not differ from those of the controls. No significant differences were found in hPRL levels in response to TRH, whereas significantly lower TSH responses wer…

Effects of subchronic paroxetine administration on night-time endocrinological profiles in healthy male volunteers

2000

Abstract To evaluate the subchronic effects of paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, on nocturnal endocrinological profiles, eight healthy male volunteers with no personal or family history of a psychiatric or neurological disease were administered paroxetine (30 mg/day) or placebo in a double-blind cross-over design. Drugs were given as a single dose at 10:00 h for a period of 4 weeks each. Between days 21 and 28 of each treatment period, sleep EEG was registered for four consecutive nights from 23:00 to 07:00 h. During the last night, hormonal profiles for prolactin, growth hormone (GH), cortisol, corticotropin (ACTH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone and melatonin w…

Naloxone increases the response of growth hormone and prolactin to stimuli in obese humans.

1987

Opiates stimulate the growth hormone and prolactin responses to stimuli in non-obese humans. Obese patients, however, show lowered growth hormone and prolactin responses and raised beta-endorphin levels. We therefore investigated the effect of the opiate antagonist naloxone on the stimulated growth hormone and prolactin secretions in a controlled double-blind study in obese patients. All patients received 200 micrograms TRH and 0.5 g/kg b.w. arginine together with 2 mg of naloxone or placebo i.v. in a randomized sequence. The TRH- and arginine-induced increases in prolactin and growth hormone were significantly greater after administration of naloxone (p less than 0.05). Naloxone also produ…
