Hepatocellular expression of a dominant-negative mutant TGF-β type II receptor accelerates chemically induced hepatocarcinogenesis
2001
The potent growth-inhibitory activity of cytokines of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily and their widespread expression in epithelia suggest that they may play an important role in the maintenance of epithelial homeostasis. To analyse TGF-beta mediated tumor suppressor activity in the liver, we generated transgenic mice overexpressing a dominant negative type II TGF-beta receptor in hepatocytes under control of the regulatory elements of the human C-reactive protein gene promoter. Transgenic animals exhibited constitutive and liver-specific transgene expression. The functional inactivation of the TGF-beta signaling pathway in transgenic hepatocytes was shown by redu…
Effects of the Blair/Brown NHS Reforms on Socioeconomic Equity in Health Care
2012
The central objectives of the ‘Blair/Brown’ reforms of the English NHS in the 2000s were to reduce hospital waiting times and improve the quality of care. However, critics raised concerns that the choice and competition elements of reform might undermine socioeconomic equity in health care. By contrast, the architects of reform predicted that accelerated growth in NHS spending combined with increased patient choice of hospital would enhance equity for poorer patients. This paper draws together and discusses the findings of three large-scale national studies designed to shed empirical light on this issue. Study one developed methods for monitoring change in neighbourhood level socioeconomic…
Occurrence of two rare species from order Lampriformes: Crestfish Lophotus lacepede (Giorna, 1809) and scalloped ribbonfish Zu cristatus(Bonelli, 181…
2017
The bony fish Lophotus lacepede (Giorna, 1809) and Zu cristatus (Bonelli, 1819) are the two species rarely recorded within the Mediterranean basin, usually reported as accidentally captured in depth (mesopelagic) fishing operations. In the current work, we present the first record of L. lacepede and Z. cristatus in fishing catches from southwestern Tyrrhenian Sea. Moreover, in order to improve existent biological/ ecological knowledge, some bio-related aspects such as feeding aspect, sexual maturity and age estimate have been discussed.
Role of caspase-8 in hepatocyte response to infection and injury in mice.
2007
Caspase-8 has been implicated in signaling for apoptotic cell death and for certain nonapoptotic functions. However, knowledge of actual physiological or pathophysiological processes to which this enzyme contributes is lacking. Using a mouse model and employing the conditional knockout approach to delete the caspase-8 gene specifically in the liver, we found that caspase-8 deficiency in hepatocytes facilitates infection of the liver by Listeria monocytogenes, attenuates the hepatocyte proliferation wave during the first 48 hours after partial hepatectomy and, depending on the genetic background of the mice, prompts a chronic inflammatory response to the hepatectomy, as a result of which the…
Internationalisation of social work doctoral studies : experiences and perspectives in the changing context of European higher education
2016
The internationalisation of doctoral education in social work has become a newly developing area particularly in Europe during the last two decades. It has been promoted by two factors: (1) the reform of higher education (Bologna reform), which contributed to the development of doctoral study and (2) the establishment of European funding programmes that would allow international cooperation and ensure the quality of the programmes. Also, in the European Qualification Framework the knowledge, skills and competences gained by doctoral qualification are defined. In this article, we analyse three international doctoral projects that were developed in Europe in last 10 years. We focus on what th…
The refugee entrepreneurship process from/in emerging economies
2021
The paper examines several refugee experiences in Mexico and presents their reasons for leaving their home countries. A gap in research is identifying the entrepreneurial process experienced by refugee entrepreneurs. We use the case study of 10 Latin American refugees in Mexico to propose a conceptual framework that describes the entrepreneurial process of refugee entrepreneurs. We have found that this process begins with the abandonment of the country of origin, followed by the traumatic experiences that caused flight and the difficulties they face in the pilgrimage to the host country. These events help shape the entrepreneurial intention of the refugees.
Comparative analysis of mast cell count in normal oral mucosa and oral pyogenic granuloma
2011
Introduction: Mast cells are large granular cells that arise from a multipotent CD 34+ precursor in the bone marrow normally distributed throughout connective tissues. The most common method to study role of mast cells in any altered condition involves their identification and quantification in that condition and compare the values with that of the normal average count or number of mast cells. The present study was thus, undertaken to identify as well as quantify mast cells in oral pyogenic granuloma and compare it with the average count of mast cells in normal oral mucosa, thus aiming to assess the changes in count of mast cells in oral pyogenic granuloma. Materials and Methods: Ten cases …
Monochorionic twin pregnancy: screening, pathogenesis of complications and management in the era of microinvasive fetal surgery
2010
Objective The management of monochorionic (MC) twin pregnancies varies in different medical centers. This paper compares screening methods to predict the complications of the MC twin pregnancy and different treatment methods. Methods We performed a literature search without language restriction in Cochrane library and PubMed (1970-2009). Case series and cohort screening studies, pathogenesis and management of complications of MC pregnancy were included. Results Elevated risk for intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) can be detected sonographically. Monitoring of MC pregnancies at increased risk and regular training sessions for the operating team combi…
Distritos industriales y renta económica: el efecto distrito – renta
2019
BRAF-V600E expression in precursor versus differentiated dendritic cells defines clinically distinct LCH risk groups.
2014
BRAF-V600E expression is identified in hematopoietic progenitor and precursor myeloid dendritic cells in patients with high-risk LCH, and enforced expression of BRAF-V600E in CD11c+ cells recapitulates a high-risk LCH-like phenotype in mice.
