Synthesis and Assembly of Wall Polymers on Regenerating Yeast Protoplasts

Accumulation of chitin and glucan on S. cerevisiae and C. albicans protoplasts begins shortly after resuspension in the regeneration medium, and mannoprotein molecules also appear retained by the regenerating wall after 30–60 minutes in S. cerevisiae or after a longer lag period in C. albicans. Nevertheless, a considerable fraction of the synthesized mannoproteins, which in SDS-acrylamide gels exhibit a different pattern from that of wall mannoproteins of cells, are still released to the growth medium during at least eight hours. De novo synthesis of chitin synthase, but not of glucan synthase, is observed in S. cerevisiae from about 30 minutes after initiation of the regeneration process. …

In 1970, Mitchell et al. isolated a lipoidal complex from the pollen of rape (Brassica napus L.). This complex, called “Brassins” was found to have partly powerful growth-promoting properties. The novel growth response of young bean plants in the second internode assay (Worley, Mitchell 1971; Mitchell, Gregory 1972) and other physiological changes following Brassin-treatment have been studied under several aspects (Krizek, Worley 1981; Gregory 1981).

In the title compound, 2C(15)H(17)NOS·C(12)H(24)O(6), the asymmetric unit consists of one N-oxide derivative and one-half of the 18-crown-6 ether, which lies on an inversion centre. In the crown ether, the O-C-C-O torsion angles indicate a gauche conformation of the ethyl-eneoxy units, while the C-O-C-C torsion angles indicate planarity of these segments. In the N-oxide unit, the dihedral angle between the pyridine and benzene rings is 85.88 (12)°. The crystal packing is stabilized by weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and C-H⋯π inter-actions.

Unexpected Structural Diversity in Alkali Metal Azide-Crown Ether Complexes: Syntheses, X-ray Structures, and Quantum-Chemical Calculations

A series of alkali metal azide-crown ether complexes, [Li([12]crown-4)(N-3)], [Na([15]crown-5)(N-3)], [Na([15]crown-5)(H2O)(2)]N-3, [K([18]crown-6)(N-3)(H2O)], [Rb([18]crown-6)(N-3)(H2O)], [Cs([18]crown-6)(N-3)](2), and [Cs([18]crown-6)(N-3)(H2O)(MeOH)], has been synthesised. In most cases, single crystals were obtained, which allowed X-ray crystal structures to be derived. The structures obtained have been compared with molecular structures computed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Abstract The associates 2(cis-[PtCl2(acetoxime)2])⋅18-crown-6⋅2H2O (1), 2(cis-[PtBr2(acetoxime)2])⋅18-crown-6⋅2H2O (2), and trans-[PtCl2(acetaldoxime)2]⋅(18-crown-6)⋅2H2O (3) were synthesized by co-crystallization of free corresponding platinum species and 18-crown-6 from wet solvents and characterized by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopies, high-resolution mass-spectrometry (ESI), TG/DTA, and X-ray crystallography. We report on the study of the electrochemically targeted complexation/expulsion of a metal cation (Ba2+) by a crown ether tetra(thiomethyl)tetrathiafulvalene derivative (crown-TTM-TTF). Real time, in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry was used to obtain spectroscopic evidence of this electrochemically triggered phenomenon. Density functional theory calculations allowed the spectral information collected to be assigned. Both experimental and theoretical results clearly show that neutral crown-TTM-TTF complexes well Ba2+. Coamplexation of mercury(II) compounds by crown ethers in organic media

Complexes between crown ethers having ring sizes of 15–24 atoms and 5 to 8 oxygens with HgX2 species (X = Cl, I, CN, SCN) have been prepared and studied. Interactions of the substituents X bound to mercury with groups or fragments in the crown compound are essential in determining the characteristics and stability of the complexes formed. Complexes with crowns of 18C6 ring sizes are the most favourable except for HgX2 compounds for which the size of X is larger than the macrocycle ring, as is the case for X = CF3.

The essential oil of Calamintha nepeta has been obtained by solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME) and by classical hydrodistillation (HD). A comparative qualitative-quantitative study on the composition of the oils was carried out. A total of 38 compounds, constituting 97.6% of the oil, were identified in the oil obtained by SFME, whereas 46 compounds, representing 95.4% of the oil, were characterized in the HD oil. SFME-distilled oil is richer in lightly oxygenated monoterpenes (LOM) than HD oil. It also has a higher amount of sesquiterpenes and a lower quantity of hydrocarbon monoterpenes. HD oil seems to be affected by chemical changes more than SFME oil.
