Fission fragment anisotropy for the 242mAm fission isomer by spin exchange pumping with polarized rubidium vapour

1992

Abstract The foundations of an experiment have been worked out with which, in principle, the spin, hyperfine constants and the isomer shift of the 14 ms fission isomer 242mAm can be measured. Such an experiment would be based on the fission fragment anisotropy signal which has actually been observed in this work after spin exchange pumping with polarized rubidium vapour in an optical buffer gas cell. A decrease of the count rate of (12±4)% has been measured at 90% with respect to the quantization axis. From this result it is concluded that the nuclear spin of the 242mAm fission isomer must be larger than 1. The low-energy fission isomers originating from the 242Pu(d, 2n)242mAm reaction have…

Alkaline cavities and tetrahedra in and solid solutions

1997

Seven different crystals were grown with 0 < x < 2 while seven different crystals were grown with , the limit value x = 1 corresponding to the clearly defined compound. A crystallographic study of these solid solutions was performed by comparison with the pure crystal. Structures were solved in the Pnma space group for the rubidium solid solutions and in the space group for the potassium ones. It was shown that the distribution of Cs and Rb, or Cs and K, among the two cationic sites called and was not random: Rb and K exhibit a higher affinity for the smallest cavity, the site. While the phase transition of and can be interpreted as rotations of the rigid tetrahedra mainly around the a dire…

Control of nonlinear processes in two-photon excited rubidium vapour by resonant laser light

2019

Frequency up- and down-conversion in warm alkali vapours over a range of applied cw laser intensities has received much attention in recent years due to promising applications in the fields of remote detection, quantum information and computing, specifically in the implementation of correlated photon pairs, photon storage and quantum memory interface to name a few. The generation of directional laser-like blue and infrared light in alkali vapours has been extensively studied. However, important details of the interplay of parametric and nonparametric nonlinear processes, such as the four-wave mixing (FWM) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) responsible for the new field generation, are…

Angular momentum alignment-to-orientation conversion in the ground state of Rb atoms at room temperature

2020

We investigated experimentally and theoretically angular momentum alignment-to-orientation conversion created by the joint interaction of laser radiation and an external magnetic field with atomic rubidium at room temperature. In particular we were interested in alignment-to-orientation conversion in atomic ground state. Experimentally the laser frequency was fixed to the hyperfine transitions of $D_1$ line of rubidium. We used a theoretical model for signal simulations that takes into account all neighboring hyperfine levels, the mixing of magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, the coherence properties of the exciting laser radiation, and the Doppler effect. The experiments were…

Absolute frequency measurement of rubidium 5S-7S two-photon transitions.

2013

We report the absolute frequency measurements of rubidium 5S-7S two-photon transitions with a cw laser digitally locked to an atomic transition and referenced to an optical frequency comb. The narrow, two-photon transition, 5S-7S (760 nm) insensitive to first order in a magnetic field, is a promising candidate for frequency reference. The performed tests yield the transition frequency with accuracy better than reported previously.

Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in rubidium vapor excited with blue light

2015

We present experimental and numerical studies of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) in rubidium vapor excited with resonant light tuned to the $5^2\!S_{1/2}\rightarrow 6^2\!P_{1/2}$ absorption line (421~nm). Contrary to the experiments performed to date on the strong $D_1$ or $D_2$ lines, in this case, the spontaneous decay of the excited state $6^2\!P_{1/2}$ may occur via multiple intermediate states, affecting the dynamics, magnitude and other characteristics of NMOR. Comparing the experimental results with the results of modelling based on Auzinsh et al., Phys. Rev. A 80, 1 (2009), we demonstrate that despite the complexity of the structure, NMOR can be adequately described with a…

Alignment-to-orientation conversion in a magnetic field at nonlinear excitation of theD2line of rubidium: Experiment and theory

2015

We studied alignment-to-orientation conversion caused by excited-state level crossings in a nonzero magnetic field of both atomic rubidium isotopes. Experimental measurements were performed on the transitions of the $D_2$ line of rubidium. These measured signals were described by a theoretical model that takes into account all neighboring hyperfine transitions, the mixing of magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, the coherence properties of the exciting laser radiation, and the Doppler effect. In the experiments laser induced fluorescence (LIF) components were observed at linearly polarized excitation and their difference was taken afterwards. By observing the two oppositely circ…

A simple quantum gate with atom chips

2005

We present a simple scheme for implementing an atomic phase gate using two degrees of freedom for each atom and discuss its realization with cold rubidium atoms on atom chips. We investigate the performance of this collisional phase gate and show that gate operations with high fidelity can be realized in magnetic traps that are currently available on atom chips.

High-precision masses of neutron-deficient rubidium isotopes using a Penning trap mass spectrometer

2007

The atomic masses of the neutron-deficient radioactive rubidium isotopes $^{74-77,79,80,83}$Rb have been measured with the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. Using the time-of-flight cyclotron resonance technique, relative mass uncertainties ranging from $1.6 \times 10^{-8}$ to $5.6 \times 10^{-8}$ were achieved. In all cases, the mass precision was significantly improved as compared with the prior Atomic-Mass Evaluation; no significant deviations from the literature values were observed. The exotic nuclide $^{74}$Rb with a half-life of only 65 ms, is the shortest-lived nuclide on which a high-precision mass measurement in a Penning trap has been carried out. The significance of these…
