Prevention of hate speech crimes: digital versus real-life environment
2022
Extending the use of social media and other digital networks, as well as technology development and the impact of the pandemic have raised the problem of how to prevent hateful speech from occurring. Limitations on hate speech closely correlate with restriction of freedom of speech, therefore balance between the two should be met to ensure both fundamental democratic right on the freedom of speech, as well as to restrict limitations on one’s honour, dignity and safety. To answer whether mechanisms for combating the crimes of hate speech in the digital environment are as effective as they are in a real-life situation, the author analyses the international (United Nations) and Council of Euro…
Death of a 23-year-old man from cardiac conduction system injury through a blunt chest impact after a car accident.
2014
Abstract Cardiac contusion, usually caused by blunt chest trauma, has been recognized with increased frequency over the past decades. Traffic accidents are the most frequent causes of cardiac contusion resulting from a direct blow to the chest. Myocardial contusion is difficult to diagnose; the clinical presentation varies greatly, ranging from a lack of symptoms to cardiogenic shock and arrhythmia. Although death is rare, cardiac contusion can be fatal. The authors report a case of death due to a cardiac conduction system injury from a blunt chest impact following a car accident. The autopsy showed no external signs of thoracic trauma, no evident rib or sternum fractures. A small sub-endoc…
Unsolved questions and preferred solution about living will
2018
Abstract Background Ethical problems about end-of-life medicine include a variety of issues approached in different ways by physicians and, more recently, special emphasis to this kind of ethical issues and possible answers has done by Italian National Ethical Committee in the issue named “Deep and continuous palliative sedation in the imminence of Death” (January, 2016). The debate is very critical in Intensive Care Units and Cancer Wards, where health care professionals face-off with terminally-ill patients is an outright routine; the Authors investigated their medical knowledge and ethical perception about patient critical and terminal condition to discuss the most relevant conclusions. …
Characterization of hydrocarbon-degrading and biosurfactant-producing Pseudomonas sp. P-1 strain as a potential tool for bioremediation of petroleum-…
2014
The Pseudomonas sp. P-1 strain, isolated from heavily petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, was investigated for its capability to degrade hydrocarbons and produce a biosurfactant. The strain degraded crude oil, fractions A5 and P3 of crude oil, and hexadecane (27, 39, 27 and 13 % of hydrocarbons added to culture medium were degraded, respectively) but had no ability to degrade phenanthrene. Additionally, the presence of gene-encoding enzymes responsible for the degradation of alkanes and naphthalene in the genome of the P-1 strain was reported. Positive results of blood agar and methylene blue agar tests, as well as the presence of gene rhl, involved in the biosynthesis of rhamnolipid, …
The comparative biology of the closely related Senecio nebrodensis and S. viscosus, a narrow endemic and a widespread ruderal
1993
The closely related Senecio nebrodensis, a perennial herb from four mountain ranges in Spain, and S. viscosus, an annual herb widespread in Europe, are being compared by the study of herbarium material and comparative cultivation. In cultivation, S. nebrodensis behaved as an annual, completing its life cycle within a shorter period of time than S. viscosus. The formation of basal leaf rosettes is much more pronounced in S. nebrodensis than in S.viscosus. The main difference between the two species, however, is their breeding system. While S. nebrodensis is self-incompatible, S. viscosus is self-compatible. Differences in reproductive morphology (mainly size and number of ray florets) are su…
The hermeneutic relevance of Aristotle
2020
This article reviews the hermeneutical dimensions present in Aristotelian philosophy, and focuses on moral philosophy. The concept of “prudence” caught the attention of Heidegger, who brought it close …

Preparedness for Studies and their most Influencing Factors
2015
<p>With the changes in the quality of education requirements and the study opportunities, it is essential to find out how youth’s readiness to study develops, and what are its’ contributing factors. The aim is to clarify the explanation of the definition „readiness”. Analyzing literature, it is concluded that in many respects readiness for concrete studies is dependent on the youth’s motives and motivation, major and minor needs, system of values, socially financial circumstances, individual characters, temperament, individually-psychological characteristics, physical and physiological growth, on the state’s policy in the fields of education, youth, and jurisprudence, as well as on yo…
Gertrude Bonnin on Sexual Morality
2021
This paper examines attitudes to sexual morality held by the Yankton Dakota author and activist Gertrude Bonnin (1876–1938), better known by her penname Zitkála-Šá (Red Bird in Lakota). Bonnin’s concerns encompass several themes: the victimization of Indian women, disintegration of Native courtship rituals, sexual threats posed by peyote use, and the predatory nature of Euro-American men. This critique as a whole — in which a ‘white invasion,’ in her words, leads to a corruption of Native sexuality — sometimes produces inconsistencies, particularly regarding Bonnin’s statements on the alleged sexual perils of peyote. Her investigations into the Oklahoma guardianship scandals of the 1920s, h…
The principle of non-refoulement vs national security in the post 9/11 era
2022
The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, had largely raised the problem of terrorism in international society. Governments launched campaigns against terrorism, one of them being the War on Terror, which as a result, raised controversial issues. One of the challenges is the fundamental human rights protection, namely the protection granted under the principle of non-refoulement. In the post-9/11 era, states started to be more concerned about their national security, and thus of individuals who enter their territories or already reside there. The main research question of this thesis is to analyze the impact of 9/11 on striking balance between the principle of non-refoulement and national…
