Diurnal Variation of Non-Arboreal Pollen in the Air in Finland

1981

Abstract This study was carried out in Jyvaskyla and Turku, in central and southern Finland, with Burkard spore traps. The average diurnal variation of all non-arboreal pollen types found in sufficient quantities is presented. A high concentration of Artemisia pollen lasting 4–8 hours was found mainly in the morning. The highest concentrations of Brassicaceae, Calluna, Cyperaceae and Rosaceae occurred during the daylight hours, often with no definite peaks. The peak occurrence of Chenopodiaceae, Compositae and Plantago pollen was around 12.00 and of Rumex from 06.00 to 10.00. The diurnal variation of Poaceae pollen varies considerably depending on the species flowering at the time. Peaks oc…

Biomonitoring of volcanogenic trace elements using two endemic species (Senecio aethnensis and Rumex aethnensis) on Mt. Etna.

2009

A biomonitoring survey, above treeline level, using two endemic species (Senecio aethnensis and Rumex aethnensis) was performed on Mt. Etna, in order to evaluate the dispersion and the impact of volcanic emissions. Samples of leaves were collected in summer 2008 from 30 sites in the upper part of the volcano (1500-3000 m a.s.l). Acid digestion of samples was carried out with a microwave oven, and 44 elements were analysed by using plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS and ICP-OES). The highest concentrations of all investigated elements were found in the samples collected closest to the degassing craters, and in the downwind sector, confirming that the eastern flank of Mt. Etna is the most impacted b…

Physiological Responses of Wetland Species Rumex Hydrolapathum to Increased Concentration of Biogenous Heavy Metals Zn and Mn in Substrate

2020

Abstract The aim of the present study was to determine if individuals of Rumex hydrolapathum Huds native to saline wetlands are able to tolerate high concentration of biogenous heavy metals Zn and Mn in substrate and to accumulate high concentration of these metals in aboveground parts. Plant physiological status was monitored by using non-destructive analysis of chlorophyll and chlorophyll a fluorescence. R. hydrolapathum plants accumulated up to 1840 mg·kg−1 Zn and 6400 mg·kg−1 Mn in older leaves. The usefulness of monitoring changes in chlorophyll concentration and chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters to predict physiological response of R. hydrolapathum plants to excess Zn and Mn was n…

Quinones and Benzophenones from the Medicinal Plants of Africa

2013

In this chapter, we discuss the chemistry of quinones and benzophenones: classification, nomenclature, biosynthesis, biological activity, and their distribution in nature. Genera such as Newbouldia, Kigelia, Aloe, Euclea, Diospyros, Bulbine, Rumex, and Kniphofia are rich sources of quinines, while the Guttiferae are rich in polyprenylated benzophenones. Most of these African species offer novel derivatives with interesting biological activities, suggesting that these species are potential sources of new drug candidates if properly investigated.

Environmental responses of past and recent agropastoral activities on south Greenlandic ecosystems through molecular biomarkers

2016

Paleoenvironmental studies previously performed on Lake Igaliku revealed two agropastoral phases in south Greenland: the Norse settlement from AD 986 to ca. AD 1450 and the recent installation of sheep farmers, since the 1920s. To improve the knowledge of the timing and magnitude of the Greenlandic agropastoral activities, a lipid inventory was realized and compared with biological and geochemical data. During the 12th century, a major increase in deoxycholic acid (DOC) and coprophilous fungal spores revealed a maximum of herbivores. Synchronously, a minimum of the n-C29/ n-C31 alkane ratio and tree and shrub pollen and a maximum of triterpenyl acetates showed a reduction in the tree and s…

Savvaļas skābeņu sugas kā modeļi ekofizioloģiskajos pētījumos veģetācijas eksperimenta apstākļos: fizioloģisko gradientu un minerālvielu nodrošinājum…

2021
