Novel rearrangements involving the RET gene in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

2018

Abstract Background In the field of gene fusions driving tumorigenesis in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), rearrangement of the proto-oncogene RET is the most frequent alteration. Apart from the most common rearrangement of RET to CCDC6, more than 15 partner genes are yet reported. The landscape of RET rearrangements in PTC (“RET-PTC”) can notably be enlarged by modern targeted next-generation sequencing, indicating similarities between oncogenic pathways in other cancer types with identical genetic alterations. Methods Targeted next-generation sequencing was performed for two cases of BRAF-wild type PTC with confirmation of the results by Sanger sequencing. A “UniProt” database research …

Prothrombotic State Induced by Middle-Distance Endurance Exercise in Middle-Aged Athletes

2018

AbstractSince the impact of possible prothrombotic factors on blood coagulation resulting from exercise remains elusive, this study investigated the acute effects of middle-distance endurance running on blood coagulation parameters in middle-aged athletes. The study population consisted of 33 male endurance runners who were engaged in a 21.1 km run under competitive conditions. Blood samples were collected before the run, immediately after the run, and 3 hours after run completion. Samples were assessed for activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), fibrinogen, D-dimer, factor VIII (FVIII), von Willebrand factor antigen (VWF:Ag), endogenous thrombin potential (area…

Quantifying coordination and coordination variability in backward versus forward running: Implications for control of motion

2015

The aims of this study were to compare coordination and coordination variability in backward and forward running and to investigate the effects of speed on coordination variability in both backward and forward running. Fifteen healthy male participants took part in this study to run forwards and backwards on a treadmill at 80%, 100% and 120% of their preferred running speeds. The coordinate data of passive reflective markers attached to body segments were recorded using motion capture systems. Coordination of shank-foot and thigh-shank couplings in sagittal plane was quantified using the continuous relative phase method. Coordination variability was calculated as the standard deviation of a…

Alpha-amylase serum levels in professional soccer players are not related with physical fitness.

2017

Backgorund Recent evidence has showed that serum or salivary values of α-amylase predict endurance running performance. In this study we investigate whether serum α-amylase concentration may be associated with training status during a competitive season and after a detraining period in professional soccer players. Methods The study population consisted in 15 male professional soccer players from an Italian major league team (age [mean±SD] 27±5 years, weight 76.9±4.1 kg, height 1.82±0.05 m). Serum α-amylase levels were measured 3 times during the last part of a competitive season (January, March and May) and just before preseason training (July). Can Graduated Compressive Stockings Reduce Muscle Activity During Running?

2017

Purpose: Graduated compressive stockings (GCS) have been suggested to influence performance by reducing muscle oscillations and improving muscle function and efficiency. However, no study to date has analyzed the influence of GCS on muscle activity during running. The objective of the study was to analyze the influence of GCS on the perception of comfort and muscle activation of the main muscles of the lower leg during running. Method: Thirty-six participants ran on a treadmill with (GCS) or without (control) GCS. The running tests consisted of a 10-min warm-up followed by a 20-min intense run at 75% of the athlete’s maximal aerobic speed. Surface electromyography of the tibialis anterior, …

Muscle-tendon architecture in Kenyans and Japanese : Potential role of genetic endowment in the success of elite Kenyan endurance runners

2022

Aim The specificity of muscle-tendon and foot architecture of elite Kenyan middle- and long-distance runners has been found to contribute to their superior running performance. To investigate the respective influence of genetic endowment and training on these characteristics, we compared leg and foot segmental lengths as well as muscle-tendon architecture of Kenyans and Japanese males (i) from infancy to adulthood and (ii) non-athletes versus elite runners. Methods The 676 participants were divided according to their nationality (Kenyans and Japanese), age (nine different age groups for non-athletes) and performance level in middle- and long-distance races (non-athlete, non-elite and elite …

Effects of treadmill running and fatigue on impact acceleration in distance running

2014

The effects of treadmill running on impact acceleration were examined together with the interaction between running surface and runner's fatigue state. Twenty recreational runners (11 men and 9 women) ran overground and on a treadmill (at 4.0 m/s) before and after a fatigue protocol consisting of a 30-minute run at 85% of individual maximal aerobic speed. Impact accelerations were analysed using two lightweight capacitive uniaxial accelerometers. A two-way repeated-measure analysis of variance showed that, in the pre-fatigue condition, the treadmill running decreased head and tibial peak impact accelerations and impact rates (the rate of change of acceleration), but no significant differenc…

Effect of 3 Weeks Use of Compression Garments on Stride and Impact Shock during a Fatiguing Run

2015

Excessive and prolonged exposure to impact acceleration during running is associated with increased injury rate. Acute use of compressive garments has been speculated to improve attenuation. However, it is unknown how longer interventions of compressive garments influence attenuation in running. 40 runners trained with compressive and placebo stockings for 3 weeks. Perception of comfort, stride parameters (rate, length) and impact acceleration (head and tibial peak acceleration, magnitude, acceleration rate and attenuation) were measured every 5 min during a fatigue run (30 min at 80% of the individual's maximal aerobic speed). Compressive stockings reduced tibial peak acceleration and magn…

Acute effects of transient vertical whole-body vibration

1991

The question as to whether shock-type whole-body vibration causes increasingly acute strain was investigated. Random vibrations were superimposed with shocks differing in amplitude and in number per unit of time in a systematic manner. The weighted root mean square (rms) acceleration was kept constant in all over the varied experiments. A total of 17 men were exposed to vibration from an electrohydraulic simulator. The following strain criteria were used: biodynamic behavior of the trunk and the head, electrical activity of the muscles of the back and the neck, subjective sensation, skin temperature in the lumbar area and visual and tracking performance. It was found that increasing shock a…

Effects of a three-month active rehabilitation program on psychomotor performance of lower limbs in subjects with low back pain: a controlled study w…

1998

Proper psychomotor performance is needed in work and in activities of daily living, but among subjects with low back pain this area has been studied Little. The present purpose was to evaluate the effect and permanence of a 3-mo. physical exercise program on the psychomotor performance of lower limbs in subjects with low back pain. The associations between psychomotor performance and intensity of low back pain and subjective disability were also evaluated. 90 subjects with nonspecific, subacute low back pain were assigned to one of the three groups: one given three months intensive training, one home exercise, or the control group. Four measurement sessions were made during the 1-yr. study…
