STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF A SURVEY ABOUT DIFFUSION OF BINGE DRINKING AND DRUNKOREXIA AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE

2017

Youth alcohol consumption is a major global public health concern. Previous reviews have concluded that exposure to alcohol marketing was associated with drinking initiation and higher alcohol consumption among youth. From January to May 2017, a survey has been conducted through administration of questionnaires about the diffusion of binge drinking and drunkorexia among the students of Palermo. Test was administered, during school time, to 2331 students between the ages of 13 and 20. Regarding the analysis of the questionnaires, 97.8% of student declare to have drunk at least once: their first taste of alcoholic drink happens at the age of thirteen/fourteen. They prefer to drink at the disc…

Burrows-Wheeler Transform on Purely Morphic Words

2022

The study of the compressibility of repetitive sequences is an issue that is attracting great interest. We consider purely morphic words, which are highly repetitive sequences generated by iterating a morphism φ that admits a fixed point (denoted by φ^∞(a) ) starting from a given character a belonging to the finite alphabet A , i.e. φ^∞(a)=lim_{i→∞}φ^i(a) . Such morphisms are called prolongable on a . Here we focus on the compressibility via the Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT) of infinite families of finite sequences generated by morphisms. In particular, denoted by r(w) the number of equal-letter runs of a word w , we provide new upper bounds on r(bwt(φ^i(a))) , i.e. the number of equal-le…

Absolutely summing operators on C[0,1] as a tree space and the bounded approximation property

AbstractLet X be a Banach space. For describing the space P(C[0,1],X) of absolutely summing operators from C[0,1] to X in terms of the space X itself, we construct a tree space ℓ1tree(X) on X. It consists of special trees in X which we call two-trunk trees. We prove that P(C[0,1],X) is isometrically isomorphic to ℓ1tree(X). As an application, we characterize the bounded approximation property (BAP) and the weak BAP in terms of X∗-valued sequence spaces.

Predicting soil loss in central and south Italy with a single USLE-MM model

2018

Purpose: The USLE-MM estimates event normalized plot soil loss, Ae,N, by an erosivity term given by the runoff coefficient, QR, times the single-storm erosion index, EI30, raised to an exponent b1> 1. This modeling scheme is based on an expected power relationship, with an exponent greater than one, between event sediment concentration, Ce, and the EI30/Pe(Pe= rainfall depth) term. In this investigation, carried out at the three experimental sites of Bagnara, Masse, and Sparacia, in Italy; the soundness of the USLE-MM scheme was tested. Materials and methods: A total of 1192 (Ae,N, QREI30) data pairs were used to parameterize the model both locally and considering all sites simultaneously. …

A correction method for dynamic analysis of linear systems

2004

Abstract This paper proposes an analytical method to improve the accuracy of the dynamic response of classically damped linear systems, as given by a standard truncated modal analysis. Upon computing the first m undamped modes of a n-degree-of-freedom system, two sets of equations in the Rn nodal space are built, which are uncoupled and govern the contribution to the response of the m computed modes and the remaining (n−m) unknown modes, respectively. The first set is solved in the Rm modal space by using the m available modes; the second set is solved in a reduced R(n−m) nodal space, without computing additional modes. Specifically, it is shown that the particular solution of the second se…

SSU rDNA Characterization of Lymnaeid Snails Transmitting Human Fascioliasis in South and Central America

1997

The small subunit (18S) rRNA gene sequences of the lymnaeid morphs I and II (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Basommatophora: Lymnaeidae) transmitting human fascioliasis in the high endemic zone of the northern Bolivian Altiplano and of Lymnaea cubensis from Mexico and Guadeloupe island (Caribbean) have been obtained by direct polymerase chain reaction PCR cycle sequencing and silver staining methods and compared to that of the 6 most common European Lymnaeidae species. Results allow us to establish definitively the distinction between the lymnaeids from the northern Bolivian Altiplano and L. cubensis. Lymnaea cubensis is a valid species distributed in North and Central America but absent in the north…

A test of water pouring height and run intermittence effects on single-ring infiltration rates

2018

Assessing how the infiltration process depends on the water impact energy improves interpretation of hydrological processes. Impact energies vary with the height of water pouring; that is, the distance between the water delivery point and the soil surface. The effects of the height of water pouring on infiltration in an initially near saturated soil can be tested in the field by two repeated Beerkan infiltration runs separated by a short pause (30 min) and using both low (non-perturbing) and high (perturbing) heights of water application. The double two-stage Beerkan run methodology was applied in two soils. The infiltration rate at the end of the perturbing stage of the experiment was 0.2–…

Determining short-term changes in the hydraulic properties of a sandy-loam soil by a three-run infiltration experiment

2020

Soil structure-dependent parameters can vary rapidly as a consequence of perturbing events such as intense rainfall. Investigating their short-term changes is therefore essential to understand the general behaviour of a porous medium. The aim of this study is to gain insight into the effects of wetting, perturbation and recovery processes through different sequences of Beerkan infiltration experiments performed on a sandy-loam soil. Two different three-run infiltration experiments (LHL and LLL) were carried out by pouring water at low (L, non-perturbing) and high (H, perturbing) heights above the soil surface and at short time intervals (hours, days). The results demonstrate that the propos…
