Élites campesinas en el entorno de la ciudad de Valencia: los Castrellenes

2017

This paper seeks to analyse economy of a well-to-do peasant family settled in the urban fringes of the city of Valencia, capital of the kingdom, in the first half of fifteenth Century. The death of the head of the family, due to the plague, made emerge the solidarity of the relatives, who took care of the orphans. Thanks to the memorial of rents we can assess the economic strategies of a wealthier peasant family, the importance of markets and the city and countryside relations.

GREEN ECONOMY: THE DEVELOPMENT OF MARGINAL AREAS IN THE HORIZON 2020 STRATEGY

2014

Bioeconomy refers to a system based on the smart utilization of biological resources based on sources from land and sea as industrial input and production of food. The Bioeconomy will also contribute to limiting the negative impacts on the environment, reduce the heavy dependency on fossil resources, mitigate climate change and move Europe towards a post-petroleum society. The work aims to investigate how the territorial marginality linked to socio-economic disparities can be a competitive advantage for the challenges proposed by the bioeconomy innovation strategy. An example of a Sicilian bio-cluster is indicated for a significant product differentiation and functional integration of agric…

The diffusion and use of information and communication technologies and the city from 1996 to 2009

2013

The aim of this paper is to investigate whether the diffusion and the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) are associated with the size of the place of residence where people live. The article explores how the relationship between ICTs and place of residence changed between 1996 and 2009. The study presents data from two consecutive telephone surveys collected from Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain. Results show an unexpected role of the relatively rural areas as attractor of new technologies. Although the largest cities have remained the locus of telecommunications on the whole, the relationship between ICTs and the place of abode has changed consider…

In Search of the Rurban Idyll? Developing the Residential Rural Areas in Finland

2013

This research focuses on perceptions of rurality in Finland. The chapter presents two different ways of delineating contemporary rural living: the approach of the Finnish Rural Policy Committee and the alternative approach arising from definitions given by the people living in rural Finland. The main aim is to study how the cultural meanings that rural residents attach to their home environments relate to the official vision of ‘Residential Rural Areas’ proposed by the Rural Policy Committee. This is done by comparing the experiential knowledge of rural residents to the official vision of future rurality. The research provides knowledge that can be used to evaluate the cultural sustainabili…

Covid-19: quando la distanza è spazio di relazione

2022

The third session of the INU 2020 conference “Post-pandemic Cities. The challenges of urban planning after the emergency” is dedicated to the new possible urban models that the pandemic led us to consider in the search for a difficult compromise between safety, sociability and a pleasant dwelling. Like a compass, the beauty guides us in achieving the social and environmental objectives that Covid-19 inexorably placed before our eyes: among these, the internal territories. Internal territories emerge as a field of experimentation of settlement structures in which wide landscape horizons prevail among the small compact villages. In 53% of Italian municipalities - equal to 60% of the national …

Digital innovations in rural micro-enterprises

2020

Digitalization gives micro-enterprises and rural areas new possibilities and it can support their competitiveness. In this paper, we have presented one way of supporting the diffusion and adoption of digital innovations in rural micro-enterprises. First, we examined the challenges and digital competence of the micro-enterprises in the rural areas of Central Finland to better understand what they needed. The second step was to develop a workshop concept. Theories of innovation diffusion and adoption were used as a base for these workshops. The last step was to evaluate the developed concept, its effects and challenges. We found that the workshop concept worked well for spreading information,…

Territorial Governance and Rural Development: Challenge or Reality?

2020

Governance has emerged as a very solid conceptual framework within which public policies are designed and implemented, but with different added values. It constitutes a truly new institutional culture. Aspects such as the coordination of actors and institutions (and in this context, individual and collective leadership); the integration and articulation of public policies and sectors; the mobilisation, participation and cooperation of stakeholders (networking); or the development of a certain capacity to adapt to changes in the environment, among others, play a fundamental role. Territorial governance provides the added value of the territorial approach, as conceived in the framework of dev…
