The Diversification of Sicilian Farms: A Way to Sustainable Rural Development

2021

Rural areas still suffer from a lack of sustainable development, and the diversification of farms may be a step in the right direction. The paper provides a detailed picture of the diversification of Sicilian farms into tourism services. Specifically, we propose a simple indicator of localization intensity of agritourism farms and explore their spatial distribution at municipality level. Our study highlights that Sicilian farms rarely diversify into tourism services, despite being situated in attractive areas. That said, some significant spatial clusters of municipalities where agritourism farms are highly concentrated do emerge from the study.

Effectiveness of using EU funds in modelling the public and private spaces - examples of good practice

2015

Les miraculés a bierność edukacyjna i zawodowa młodych mieszkańców wsi - case study Polska i kraje UE

2018

Aging on Indian Reservations: The Ugly, the Bad, and the Good

2012

This chapter examines the conditions for the older population on Indian reservations and how those conditions compare to the non-Indian population. The discussion opens on a national level, though the focus is on tribes in the Western United States. Older Indians on reservations are aging in a society where they are an almost invisible part of rural America. Yet the reservations, despite the poor socioeconomic conditions on many, represent home and a place for off-reservation Native Americans to come back to. To include the voices of Indian elders and gain insights into how they perceive being elders, we report on interviews conducted with older Indians on the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho…

A Research Project about Communism in Romanian Countryside: Ploughmen’s Front Propaganda (1944-1953)

2013

The Ploughmen Front represented the strongest and the oldest “comrade” of the Communist Party from Romania, with a major role in the countryside communization. In general, the studies dedicated to Romania communization focused on institutionalization of the regime, liquidation of democratic order, repression, anticommunist resistance and less on the transformations undergone by the Romanian countryside. The only important issue was the agriculture collectivization. Our project takes into consideration a new approach, which is the research of the way communism became popular in the rural areas, which meant 80% of the Romanian population, how the popularity of the historical parties was dislo…

Entrepreneurship in Rural Areas and Sustainable Development - to What Extent Self-Government Activities Support them. A Case Study of Opole Voivodesh…

2020

Entrepreneurship acts as a catalyst for resolving many economic and social issues. It is often seen as the key factor in driving employment rates in rural areas, particularly among young people. It significantly impacts the overall development of the region, including the quality of life. More job opportunities help create employment for a number of people within their own social system. More specifically, it encourages young and well-educated people to stay in village areas which otherwise become increasingly depopulated. This brings us to a problem; to overcome the existing challenges, rural areas must not only drive the development but also ensure its sustainability. Sustainable rural de…

Miesten ja naisten arki? Maaseutu sukupuolittuneiden merkitysten tilana

2011

The Context of Rural–Urban Relationships in Finland, France, Hungary, The Netherlands and Spain

2009

This paper presents a comprehensive view of the empirical research findings concerning rurban relationships in different European countries (Finland, France, Hungary, the Netherlands and Spain), through two types of rurban territories: those that are placed close to (or included in) a metropolitan area and those that are close to (and influenced by) an important tourist area or place. Its main aim is to show the diversity of European experiences with regard to urban pressure in this type of areas, highlighting the socio-economic and institutional contexts in explaining similarities and differences between five countries. The results will review the various meanings of ‘rural’ and ‘rurality’…

LATENT CONFLICTS AND PLANNING ETHICAL CHALLENGES IN THE SOUTH-EASTERN SICILY “LANDSCAPE OF EXCEPTION”

2015

In the last 30 years Southern Italy has changed from being a region of emigration to one of immigration, in main cities as well as in rural areas. Accordingly, South-Eastern Sicily is recently experiencing remarkable physical, social and economic changes, with significant transformation of its agricultural landscape. Statistics of the last 20 years show high levels of development of the agricultural sector, with remarkable innovation and internationalization of production. At the same time non-official statistics show a higher concentration of - often illegal - immigrants in rural areas. On the other hand, landscape planning and management ensure more “sustainable” local development. The di…

Rethinking inner areas. A multidisciplinary approach to the revival of the territories.

2022

[...] Our little villages have never been as interesting as they are now, they have the feel of the past and still manage to take in even the atmosphere of this time. They have strengths and intensities that we don’t know how to draw on because we don’t look at them, we don’t know how to love them. [...] There is discomfort, there is loneliness, but there is also beauty. This is the starting point, the proper use of our ruins.
