Network governance arrangements and rural-urban synergy
2021
Increasing attention has been paid to the importance of balanced rural–urban interaction to sustainable regional development. Yet, our knowledge on the elements of network governance for such interaction is scarce. The aim of this paper is to study what kind of network governance arrangements currently exist, how they can be improved, and whether evolutionary governance paths can be identified. We analyse five existing and evolving cases of functioning rural–urban interaction in European Union (EU) member states, using a network governance framework as an analytical lens. We supplement the governance analysis with examining what kind of spatial understanding or combination of di…
2+2=7. If the project improves its parts
2016
The International Open City Summer School of Piacenza 2015 involved the participants in the design of a spread museum of the agriculture between rural and urban areas, crossing the old town of Piacenza. The submitted project, processed in that workshop, is an occasion to call in question the different scales of the design and some linked themes like the measure, the porosity and the permeability of the architecture and the town. Within the design of the museum, the experimentation of an “intermediate scale” reached us to the need of the architecture as connection of various parts, thus to the difference between mending and making something new. At the end, the challenge is that the sum of t…
Schnittlinien Zwischen Stadt und Land. Rural-urban intersections. Between Contemporary urban and rural spaces
2017
From December to April 2015 I was in Hannover for a postdoctoral period founded by DAAD. I was continued a study about contemporary territories and villages, started at University of Palermo and regarding western Sicilian areas. I found Jörg Schröder’s researches (LUH - Chair for Regional Building and Urban Planning) a lush field to compare cases and methods. In that period Prof. Schröder with his team were studying Hamburg Metropolitan Region (Regiobranding - Branding of rural-urban regions through cultural landscape characteristics). I participated in the surveys in Steinburg district, at the mouth of the Elbe. An agricultural area large more than 50,000 hectares has been observed. The ur…
The social regeneration of brownfields as an activator of peri-urban development. The Añana salt valley in Spain as good model of brownfield regenera…
2016
Productive and extractive districts in a state of neglect are in dire need of regeneration, especially brownfields that are in rur-urban sites and could disfigure the landscape. These elements should be considered as resources to define a new territorial value. The present paper shows an empirical example of brownfield re-cycle that produce social innovation in rur-urban sites, this case study is the Añana salt valley and it is situated in Spain. Brownfields, in fact, are catalysts of social, economic, cultural, and ecological revitalization. This aspect assigns to these elements a value of peri-urban resource for a sustainable and participatory multi-scale enhancement. The paper focus the …
New rur-urban alliances: Experiments of social innovation in Terre Sicane Inland Area in Sicily
2018
"Rural" and "Urban" are not terms of a dichotomic opposition but they become elements of a necessary alliance that enfold an actualized view of the territory development and the transformation of rural economies and communities. New types of rural-urban interaction, recovering the value of a territorial vision, can put in value, in original forms, creative, innovative potential of new relations between urban and rural areas. In this framework, the Italian national strategy named "Strategia Nazionale Aree Interne" (SNAI) represents an existing and emerging governance approach looking at official authorities but also at informal governance groups to overcome the classic opposition between rur…
Transitioning towards a Sustainable Wellbeing Economy—Implications for Rural–Urban Relations
2021
This article focuses on the question of how a shift from a narrow economic perspective to a wider sustainable wellbeing focus in regional development strategies and actions might change rural–urban relations. A brief review of relevant research and discourses about economic development models provides the foundation for the analysis. The review leads to the development of an analytical framework that puts the notion of sustainable wellbeing at its center. The criteria included in the analytical framework are then used to assess the current situation, challenges and perceived ways forward based on data and analyses from 11 European regions. The focus of the analysis is on different exp…
Arrendaments i parceries. La gestió indirecta de la terra al País Valencià (segles XIV-XV)
2002
In this article, it is studied the market of land lease in the Valentian rural society in the end of the Middle Age. Using notarial sources and court rolls, it is possible to know the economic function that exercised this forms of land management in the agrarian system. The penetration of urban capital through this kind of contracts was always limited. Far from eroding the hegemony of the small peasant farming, leases consolidated this pattern as productive basis of the feudal system.

En aquest article s'estudia el mercat de cessió de la terra a curt termini en la societat rural valenciana a les darreries de l’Edat Mitjana. A partir de fonts notarials i judicials, es pot …
Internet Access in Rural Areas: Brake or Stimulus as Post-Covid-19 Opportunity?
2020
The lack of internet access in most rural areas has become a challenge worldwide. The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted trends such as teleworking and e-commerce, meaning an opportunity for the local economy of these areas, but with serious difficulties in carrying it out. This paper aims to detect this lack of internet in inland areas of the region of Valencia through local actors, in order to identify clear priorities and real needs through an explorative and replicable approach based on agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC). The main findings suggest that there are different patterns in the rural internet access related to adequate infrastructure and planned actions by local counci…
Territories. Rural-Urban strategies
2016
Territories is a design-based approach to the dynamics of larger spatial contexts with the double task of enfolding an actualised view of the habitat and of synthesising visions of its future perspectives. Opposed to traditional dystopic concepts of urban and rural, Territories engages with the potential of rural-urban interfaces in building visions of spatial futures, valorising creativity, implicit knowledge, and knowledge gained by design. Territories promotes an overall shift in public awareness and sectorial policies towards place-based strategies. Initiated by an international conference held in April 2016, in the framework of “Hochschuldialog Südeuropa” of DAAD, Territories displays …
A New Rur-Urban Utopia? Social innovation and the case of the Sicani area in Sicily
2016
Urbanization patterns based on urban bias propose rural areas as agriculture based areas that exchange goods with urban areas (poles) through corridors systems connecting poles and peripheries. Also in many spatial polices the exchange of goods between urban and rural areas are considered an essential element of rural-urban linkages, increasing flows of goods between rural and urban areas with high population density and where services and manufacture centres are located. The strategic questions that the conference "TERRITORIES. Rural-urban Strategies“ suggests ask to look at a new alliance between rural and urban spaces able to overcome any sectorial interaction (agriculture based in rural…
