Infrastrutture, campagna e tessuti urbani a Partinico. Tra la SS 113 e viale dei Platani

2014

2+2=7. If the project improves its parts

2016

The International Open City Summer School of Piacenza 2015 involved the participants in the design of a spread museum of the agriculture between rural and urban areas, crossing the old town of Piacenza. The submitted project, processed in that workshop, is an occasion to call in question the different scales of the design and some linked themes like the measure, the porosity and the permeability of the architecture and the town. Within the design of the museum, the experimentation of an “intermediate scale” reached us to the need of the architecture as connection of various parts, thus to the difference between mending and making something new. At the end, the challenge is that the sum of t…

Schnittlinien Zwischen Stadt und Land. Rural-urban intersections. Between Contemporary urban and rural spaces

2017

From December to April 2015 I was in Hannover for a postdoctoral period founded by DAAD. I was continued a study about contemporary territories and villages, started at University of Palermo and regarding western Sicilian areas. I found Jörg Schröder’s researches (LUH - Chair for Regional Building and Urban Planning) a lush field to compare cases and methods. In that period Prof. Schröder with his team were studying Hamburg Metropolitan Region (Regiobranding - Branding of rural-urban regions through cultural landscape characteristics). I participated in the surveys in Steinburg district, at the mouth of the Elbe. An agricultural area large more than 50,000 hectares has been observed. The ur…

Rural-urban intersections

2016

I dialoghi con i docenti di alcune università europee - Marcella Aprile, Giuseppe Barbera, Carmelo Dazzi, Vittorio Gregotti, Karin Helms, João Nunes, José Laborda Yneva, Jörg Schröder, Martin Prominski - s’intrecciano in una discussione a più voci che tratteggia un quadro sull’abitare contemporaneo fra spazi urbani e rurali. Con un saggio di Andrea Sciascia. Dialogues with professors from various European universities - Marcella Aprile, Giuseppe Barbera, Carmelo Dazzi, Vittorio Gregotti, Karin Helms, João Nunes, José Laborda Yneva, Jörg Schröder, Martin Prominski - are interwoven to create an image of contemporary living between urban and rural spaces. Frammenti della città in estensione

2018

SMALL LAKES AND RESERVOIRS IN THE HILLS OF SICILY. MAINTAIN, SAVE AND RECOVER RURAL LANDSCAPE

2011

In the transition from nomadic to sedentary, people have tried - for their settlements - the most plenty of water, and the first cities were founded, in fact, along Tigris and Euphrates rivers, extraordinary water resources in a particular dry climate. In the most interior of Sicily, which has always been characterized by low rainfall, the farmers - over time - have tried various expedients for the preservation of rain water in order to allow its survival and crop. The use of new technologies and materials has resulted in recently hard impacts for landscape, while construction of small dams filled with earth, using natural soil impluviums and the nature of the land, made it possible to irri…

Diventare nativi : Recensione di Taking the Country's Side. Architecture and Agriculture di Sébastien Marot

2021

Taking the Country’s Side.

The appropriate legal and administrative measures: The Florence Charters and legislation governing the identification, listing and protection of hist…

2021

40 years ago, the ICOMOS-IFLA and Italian Florence Charters canonized historic gardens as cultural heritage. However, neither document has legal force, so they are only influential if voluntarily accepted and translated into legal or administrative measures. This paper uses the city of Palermo, (Sicily) to compare the policy recommendations made in the Florence Charters to the international, Italian, regional and municipal policy that effectively governs historic gardens. Because of its autonomous privileges, Sicily governs its heritage differently than the rest of Italy, and in many ways this independence exacerbates problems in historic garden conservation and management. The Covid-19 pan…

2020

The paper analyzes the unpublished photographic documentation in the box n. 111 of the Accascina Fund, stored in the Sicilian Regional Library of Palermo. This unknown archival heritage is crucial in order to trace the artistic aspects of the first rural villages built in Sicily in 1940, following the law for the colonization of the Sicilian rural areas. Through the analysis of these photos, the decorative works that were found in these villages are identified: today most of them no longer exist and, in some cases, there is no other evidence. In this way, the contribution aims to give value to the lost artistic heri- tage and, indirectly, to this part of the Fund. In addition, it seeks to d…

The social regeneration of brownfields as an activator of peri-urban development. The Añana salt valley in Spain as good model of brownfield regenera…

2016

Productive and extractive districts in a state of neglect are in dire need of regeneration, especially brownfields that are in rur-urban sites and could disfigure the landscape. These elements should be considered as resources to define a new territorial value. The present paper shows an empirical example of brownfield re-cycle that produce social innovation in rur-urban sites, this case study is the Añana salt valley and it is situated in Spain. Brownfields, in fact, are catalysts of social, economic, cultural, and ecological revitalization. This aspect assigns to these elements a value of peri-urban resource for a sustainable and participatory multi-scale enhancement. The paper focus the …
