Characteristics of Workplace Learning Among Finnish Vocational Students

In Finnish VET, students’ work experience is explicitly defined as workplace learning, instead of the practice of already learnt skills. Therefore, vocational students’ learning periods in the workplace are goal-oriented, guided and assessed. This paper examines the characteristics of students’ workplace learning and compares them with the characteristics of employees’ workplace learning. The data were collected with an Internet questionnaire from final-year vocational students (N = 3106). In total, 1603 students (52 %) answered the questionnaire. The University of Patras' Library Services designed and offered to primary and secondary schools the pilot educational program “From the Ancient to the Modern Tablets”, featuring immersive multimedia learning experiences about the book history. Tiivistelmä – Abstract Suomen peruskoulujärjestelmä sai alkunsa vuonna 1970 ja samana vuonna julkaistiin ensimmäinen peruskoulun opetussuunnitelma. Seuraavat opetussuunnitelmauudistukset toteutettiin vuosina 1985, 1994 ja 2004. Parhaillaan Suomessa kehitetään uutta peruskoulun opetussuunnitelmaa, joka on tarkoitus ottaa käyttöön vuonna 2016. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin johtajuuden ja opetussuunnitelman välistä suhdetta. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena sisällönanalyysina, jossa aineiston muodostivat viralliset opetussuunnitelmat ja kaksi asiantuntijahaastattelua. Lapselle liike on luontaisin tapa ilmentää musiikkia. Myös laulaminen ja oman äänen käyttö on läsnä lapsen elämässä pienestä pitäen. Koulun musiikintunnilla voisi hyödyntää lapsen luontaista intoa liikkua ja laulaa ja perustaa opetus niille. Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena on luoda toiminnallinen laulunopetuksen materiaalipaketti alakouluun ja testata sitä. Materiaalipakettini perustuu valtakunnallisen perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman (2014) laulunopetuksen tavotteisiin ja sisältöihin ja uusimpiin musiikin oppimateriaaleihin. In 2013, the authors prepared a report on educational excellence and equity in Finland based on PISA 2009 data and asked the question “Could Finland achieve both excellence and equality goals in the coming decade? Five years later, this report re-examines the challenge faced by Finland in light of recent PISA results. The Finnish school system, both the Finnish and Swedish speaking components, have consistently ranked at the top of the list of OECD countries. However, Finland’s performance has been dropping compared to previous years, while it failed to keep pace with performance improvements in other countries. To understand how the type of education affects long-term mental health, we examine the effects of a comprehensive school reform on mental health–related hospitalizations and deaths. The reform postponed the tracking of students into vocational and academic schools from age 11 to age 16, thus affecting the set of peers and the curriculum to which these students were exposed. The reform was implemented gradually across Finnish municipalities between 1972 and 1977. We use difference-in-differences variation and administrative data. This qualitative multiple case study research investigated how the Finnish school system practices student leadership as a significant dimension of democracy on three school levels: primary, lower secondary and upper secondary. The study defines student leadership through the democracy issue, leadership decision making and leadership theories.
