Keep Calm in Heated Debates: How People Perceive Different Styles of Discourse in a Scientific Debate
2021
Scientific debates are, in an epistemological sense, argumentative approaches aimed at coming to the most appropriate conclusion. However, as these debates sometimes involve interpersonal rather than content-driven attacks (e.g., an argument between scientific experts might involve personal dislike), the following question arises: How do such communication behaviors affect people’s perception of the argument? In an empirical study, we presented prospective teachers (N = 222) with a newspaper article about two scientific experts controversially discussing the pros and cons of a fictional vocabulary training program. Using a 1 × 2 between-subject design, the article contained either a neutral…
Antecedents of and their effect on trust in online word-of-mouth : case Finnish discussion forums
2011
The growing importance of digital marketing communications and digital marketing channels has raised challenges in understanding this new environment and consumers’ action within it. Objective of this study was to explore the dynamics of online word-of-mouth and consumers’ trust formation towards it. Literature review offers a comprehensive view to trust in its contradictory nature, to the unique characteristics of online word-of-mouth. Research was explanatory and causal, trying to find relationships between variables derived from previous studies and theory. Quantitative method was employed to measure following latent variables: Trustworthiness of a community, website quality, accuracy, r…
Social media as the pulse of national security threats : A framework for studying how social media influences young people's safety and security situ…
2019
Social media is becoming more and more of a security threat. Dissatisfaction with the content and quality of the information flow is increasing not only at the nation-state level, but also at the level of people's everyday lives. Social media is one of the key channels for distributing disinformation and it has become a key instrument for influencing political activity in particular. It is difficult to single out individual contributors or culprits when it comes to the dissemination of disinformation due to the rhizomatic nature of the internet and the Western approach to using social media. The same principles such as ease of access to the network, democracy, freedom of speech, and knowled…
Context-sensitive distraction warnings : effects on drivers' visual behavior and acceptance
2016
In this study, we investigated the effects of context-sensitive distraction warnings on drivers' in-car glance behaviors and acceptance. The studied prototype warning application functions on a smart phone. The novelty of the application is its proactive and context-sensitive approach to the adjustment of warning thresholds according to the estimated visual demands of the driving situation ahead. In our study, novice and experienced drivers conducted in-car tasks with a smart phone on a test track with and without the warnings. The application gave a warning if the driver's gaze was recognized to remain on the smart phone over a situation-specific threshold time, or if the driver was approa…

Systematic education has a positive impact on nurses' evidence-based practice: Intervention study results
2022
Aims To evaluate how an education program on evidence-based practice (EBP) affected nurses´ knowledge, practices, and attitudes related to EBPs in patient care. Methods Nurses of one Finnish university hospital participated in two separate EBP education programs in 2016–2017 and 2018–2019. Data was collected by a questionnaire given before and after each program. Reliable instruments for measuring EBP were used: The Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (24 items) and the Attitudes to Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (17 items). Means and frequencies were evaluated with the Mann-Whitney U test and linear regression. Results Nurses reported that their EBP practice, skills and the Work b…
Assessment of Organizational Trust: Preliminary Data for Romanian Adaptation of the Organizational Trust Inventory Short Form
2013
Abstract In the last years, trust became an important variable in regard to the well-being of organizations. In Romania, it was included in studies as a variable but there are few instruments that measure organizational trust. Therefore I identify a necessity for developing instruments useful in assessing and promoting any organizational adjustments. This paper presents the preliminary data obtained in the process of adaptation of OTI for the Romanian population. In doing so, we followed the guidelines of ITC. Using a sample of 108 employees the psychometric results show that OTI-RO has a high level of internal consistency reliability (a = 0.94) and it can be used exclusive for equivalent p…
Native and subunit molecular mass and quarternary structure of the hemoglobin from the primitive branchiopod crustacean Triops cancriformis
2006
Many branchiopod crustaceans are endowed with extracellular, high-molecular-weight hemoglobins whose exact structural characteristics have remained a matter of conjecture. By using a broad spectrum of techniques, we provide precise and coherent information on the hemoglobin of one of the phylogenetically ‘oldest’ extant branchiopods, the tadpole shrimp Triops cancriformis. The hemoglobin dissociated under reducing conditions into two subunits, designated TcHbA and TcHbB, with masses of 35 775 ± 4 and 36 055 ± 4 Da, respectively, determined by ESI-MS. Nonreducing conditions showed only two disulfide-bridged dimers, a homodimer of TcHbA, designated D1 (71 548 ± 5 Da), and the heterodimer D2 (…
Growth and production of three macrozoobenthic species in the Gulf of Riga, including comparisons with other areas
1999
Three soft-bottom stations in the southern part of the Gulf of Riga were studied during the period December 1993 to January 1995. The amphipods, Monoporeia affinis and Pontoporeia femorata, and the poychaete Marenzelleria viridis, were analysed for production, using the cohort growth method. Animals were also analysed for carbon and nitrogen content in a CHN-analyser. Based on size measurements, the quantitative data were divided into age-classes and the growth of each cohort was calculated first as wet weight and then converted into carbon and nitrogen content. Total annual production of each species was calculated as well as turnover ratios. The turnover ratio for Monoporeia affinis was e…
Ancient xenocrystic zircon in young volcanic rocks of the southern Lesser Antilles island arc
2017
Abstract The Lesser Antilles arc is one of the best global examples in which to examine the effects of the involvement of subducted sediment and crustal assimilation in the generation of arc crust. Most of the zircon recovered in our study of igneous and volcaniclastic rocks from Grenada and Carriacou (part of the Grenadines chain) is younger than 2 Ma. Within some late Paleogene to Neogene (~ 34–0.2 Ma) lavas and volcaniclastic sediments however, there are Paleozoic to Paleoarchean (~ 250–3469 Ma) xenocrysts, and Late Jurassic to Precambrian zircon (~ 158–2667 Ma) are found in beach and river sands. The trace element characteristics of zircon clearly differentiate between different types o…
