Malum arbor. El código semiológico de la manzana
1991
A TRAVES DEL ESTUDIO SIMBOLICO DEL MANZANO SE ABORDA LA MAS IMPORTANTE CARACTERISTICA DEL CODIGO SEMIOLOGICO DE ESTA FRUTA Y DEL ARBOL QUE LO OFRECE. MEDIANTE LA ASOCIACION DE LA MANZANA CON EL PECADO ORIGINAL, EL MANZANO HA SIDO IDENTIFICADO COMO UN ARBOL DE SALVACION Y LA MANZANA COMO FRUTO DEL AMOR. IDEAS CODIFICADAS COMO RESULTADO DE LA CULTURA OCCIDENTAL. EL PRESENTE ESTUDIO PLANTEA LAS CUESTIONES DEL CODIGO EN UN SENTIDO DIACRONICO, TENIENDO EN CUENTA LAS TRADICIONES LITERARIAS Y GRFICAS, Y CULMINANDO CON EJEMPLOS QUE TRASMITE LA EMBLEMATICA DE LOS SIGLOS XVI Y XVII. Dwie drogi ze Wschodu na Zachód. Szkic biograficzny do historii polskich losów XIX i XX wieku
2020
The article was inspired by the biography of Zofia Kossak-Szczucka. The rich life of Zofia Kossak was full of extraordinary situations and twists and turns, but above all, her life was characterized by a constant journey. The road from one end of Europe – Ukraine, to the other – the British Isles. Her story became a pretext for presenting the path that two other Poles traveled from the eastern ends of Europe towards its heart and western borders. The first of them was known, although widely, but only from one chapter of the biography – Gabriel Narutowicz. An extremely interesting figure, who came to Switzerland from Lithuania for health reasons in the mid-1880s. He has found his new home in…
The Eloquence of Publius Sulpicius Rufus and Gaius Aurelius Cotta in Cicero's Brutus
2018
The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the personalities of Publius Sulpicius Rufus and Gaius Aurelius Cotta, that illustrate the Roman eloquence at the beginning of the first century BC with particular regard to the wide section of the Ciceronian Brutus, the treatise in which they are protagonists of an intense confrontation in order to reflect on different styles of eloquence. On the other hand, a survey on the characteristics of their eloquence, conducted in the absence of direct evidence that provides objective feedback about their oratorical qualities, also makes possible to analyse the importance (and in some cases the indispensability) of Cicero’s opinion.
Exploring the social and sexual “reality” of contemporary pornography
1993
What are the social roles assumed by men and women in contemporary sexually explicit movies, and in what contexts are their actions portrayed? Perhaps more important, have the predominant themes of pornography shifted in response to the public scrutiny and criticism popular in the mid‐1980s? In this investigation we addressed these questions using a random sample of 50 pornographic videotapes drawn from an archive of essentially all such materials targeted for heterosexual consumers available in the international marketplace from 1979 to 1988. The findings revealed that some thematic aspects of modern pornographic movies have shifted over time. Significant increases were evident in the freq…
3D Ruthenium Nanoparticle Covalent Assemblies from Polymantane Ligands for Confined Catalysis
2020
International audience; The synthesis of metal nanoparticle (NP) assemblies stabilized by functional molecules is an important research topic in nanoscience, and the ability to control interparticle distances and positions in NP assemblies is one of the major challenges in designing and understanding functional nanostructures. Here, two series of functionalized adamantanes, bis-adamantanes, and diamantanes, bearing carboxylic acid or amine functional groups, were used as building blocks to produce, via a straightforward method, networks of ruthenium NPs. Both the nature of the ligand and the Ru/ligand ratio affect the interparticle distance in the assemblies. The use of 1,3-adamantanedicarb…
High-speed exhaustive 3-locus interaction epistasis analysis on FPGAs
2015
Abstract Epistasis, the interaction between genes, has become a major topic in molecular and quantitative genetics. It is believed that these interactions play a significant role in genetic variations causing complex diseases. Several algorithms have been employed to detect pairwise interactions in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) but revealing higher order interactions remains a computationally challenging task. State of the art tools are not able to perform exhaustive search for all three-locus interactions in reasonable time even for relatively small input datasets. In this paper we present how a hardware-assisted design can solve this problem and provide fast, efficient and exhaus…
A First Principles Study on Charge Dependent Diffusion of Point Defects in Rutile TiO2
2010
A first principles theoretical study on the diffusion mechanism of Ti interstitials and O vacancies in rutile TiO2 is reported. We find that the diffusion depends strongly on the defect charge. Wea...
