Intra-allelic variation in introns of the S13-RNase allele distinguishes sweet, wild and sour cherries

2010

The cherry (Prunus avium), a self-incompatible diploid species, and the sour cherry (Prunus cerasus), a self-incompatible or self-compatible allotetraploid species derived from P. avium and Prunus fruticosa, share several S-RNase alleles, including S13. An inactive form, S13° ,i s found in some sour cherries. Two (AT) microsatellites are associated with allele S13-RNase, one in the first intron and one in the second. Their length polymorphisms were studied in 14 sweet and 17 wild cherries (both P. avium) and in 42 sour cherries. Fluorescent primers amplifying each microsatellite were designed and amplification prod- ucts sized on an automated sequencer. Variants ranged from 247 to 273 bp fo…

“Misura/Relazione. Area Porta Ovest"

2010

The paper describes the different phases of the project experience faced during the INTERNATIONAL PhD SUMMER SCHOOL: STRATEGY RESEARCH PROJECTS FOR THE CONTEMPORARY CITY. TALL BUILDINGS AND LANDSCAPE. The construction of the landscape through the composition of the figure; the relationship of the tall building with its context; and, finally, the definition of the elements of the tall building consisting of the plinth, the central body, and the crowning.

Reliability Analysis of a Controlled Stage-Constructed and Reinforced Embankment on Soft Ground Using 2D and 3D Models

2020

Geosynthetic reinforcement has become a very practical technique to improve geotechnical structure safety. In spite of improved soil behavior, structures are affected by uncertainties related to soil and reinforcement material properties. This paper aims to present a reliability analysis in order to take statistical information (uncertainties) into account in a safety analysis of reinforced embankments. The analysis was used in a case study on a controlled stage-constructed embankment on soft ground in order to investigate its probabilistic stability. Modeling was performed by commercial geotechnical software usage (GeoStudio and RocScience packs, SIGMA/W+SLOPE/W and SLIDE³, respectively) a…

Active tectonics in the Calabrian Arc: Insights from the Late Miocene to Recent structural evolution of the Squillace Basin (offshore eastern Calabri…

2023

The Calabrian Arc represents one of the most active sectors of the upper plate of the Tyrrhenian-Ionian subduction system. This research aims to reconstruct the evolution of the Squillace Basin (Ionian offshore of the Calabrian Arc) from the Late Miocene to Recent times and recognise active shallow and deep structures using a multiscale approach. The latter is based on interpreting high-penetration and high-resolution seismic reflection profiles, calibrated with well-log data coupled with bathymetric data and the distribution of instrumental earthquakes. Data highlight three steps in the evolution of the Squillace Basin. A Late Miocene extensional event led to the formation of WNW-ESE orien…

Il Cabinet d'amateur di Georges Perec

2011

In 1979 one year after the publication of La vie mode d’emploi, George Perec wrote Cabinet d’amateur. Histoire d’un tableau, in which he tells the story of a painting belonging to the genre of the cabinet d’amateur, also known as kunst- und wunderkammer. It is a collection of different paintings, usually belonging to a rich man or a notable, portrayed (once again) in a single picture celebrating the magnificence of this more or less real collection. As for the pictorial genre, so the short novel is the celebration of the images collected by George Perec in his previous masterpiece, La vie mode d’emploi. This is why I assume this work to be referable to the genre of structural homology more …

Klein, Hurwitz, and the “Jewish Question” in German Academia

2018

Mathematicians love to tell stories about people they once knew or perhaps only heard about. If the story happens to sound believable, others are apt to repeat it, possibly embellishing on the original tale. Such mathematical folklore occasionally finds its way into print, and once it does, readers are apt to take such stories at face value, lending them additional credibility. Occasionally, though, alleged facts come under scrutiny, and established stories are exposed as fiction. Yet even when someone comes along with decisive evidence refuting an earlier account it can easily happen that the original story just refuses to die.

Defect Luminescence Study in Tetragonal GeO2 Crystals

2000

The perovskite-or rutile-like GeO2 crystals were grown by the “top-seed” method from a fused germanium dioxide solution with sodium bicarbonate. The luminescence was studied under cathode-, x-ray, and photo-excitation. There are two luminescence bands at 550 nm and 400 nm with slow (100–200 µs) and fast (<20 ns) decay, respectively. The luminescence can be excited either by intra-center and electron-hole recombination processes. An analogous luminescence, however with strong non-exponential decay, is observed in glassy materials obtained from the frozen solution. Sodium-germanate glasses melted under oxygen deficient condition also possess similar luminescence, therefore the luminescence is…

BIODIVERSITY OF SICILIAN FRUIT TREES: STUDIES ON PLUMS

2010

The Sicilian territory contains a wide reserve of biodiversity of fruit tree species that, over a period of several centuries, have found there propitious pedoclimatic conditions for their establishment, and genetic diversification. The indigenous germplasm characterized Sicilian agriculture until less than one century ago but, after the diffusion of new cultivars originating from genetic improvement programs, a great part of this germplasm was replaced and now these important resources are at high risk of genetic erosion. Recently, public interest in the safeguarding of biodiversity and the development of a new interest in genetic resources and their scientific, economic and cultural impor…

Characterization of five sour orange clones through molecular markers and leaf essential oils analysis.

2006

Five clones of sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) showing significant morphological differences were selected from our germplasm collection and characterized both by genetic and leaf volatiles analysis. The genetic studies were undertaken by the use of molecular markers developed by PCR-based techniques (ISSR and RAPD), while the leaf essential oil patterns were obtained by chromatographic and mass spectrometric determination. Data obtained suggest that reasonably similar information can be achieved from the two techniques, supporting each other in characterization studies.
