Automated fundus images analysis techniques to screen retinal diseases in diabetic patients

2011

In this Ph.D. thesis, we study new methods to analyse digital fundus images of diabetic patients. In particular, we concentrate on the development of the algorithmic components of an automatic screening system for diabetic retinopathy. The techniques developed can be categorized in: quality assessment and improvement, lesion segmentation and diagnosis. For the first category, we present a fast algorithm to numerically estimate the quality of a single image by employing vasculature and colour-based features; additionally, we show how it is possible to increase the image quality and remove reflection artefacts by merging information gathered in multiple fundus images (which are captured by ch…

2012

Aging is defined by all the physiological processes that alter the structure and functions of the body. With advanced age, aging of the human retina can evolve into pathological forms, agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) or diabetic retinopathy (DR). The mechanisms involved in the transition from normal aging to a pathologic state are poorly understood. Oxidative stress and advanced glycation end-products are promoting factors for aging of the retina. Meanwhile, epidemiological studies suggest that a diet rich in long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), potentially protects against the development of AMD a…

Participation of nutritional and environmental factors in aging of the retina and age-related retinopathies

2012

With advanced age, aging of the human retina can evolve into pathological forms, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or diabetic retinopathy (DR). Meanwhile, epidemiological studies suggest that a diet rich in long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) such as EPA and DHA, potentially protects against the development of AMD and insulin resistance, the main risk factor for DR. Within this context, our research objectives were to assess: 1 - the impact of endogen and environmental factors, known to trigger oxidative stress, advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) or insulin resistance, on the function and aging of the retina, and 2 - the response of the retina to a omega-3 LC-…

Plasmalogen metabolism in retinal glial cells : interaction between cells during normal or pathological vascular development

2017

Retinal vascular disorders such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration represent the first cause of vision loss at all ages in industrialized countries. Many epidemiological or animal studies have shown the involvement of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the regulation of vascular development and more specifically the beneficial properties of omega 3 PUFA (n-3 PUFA) against pathological vascularization. Those PUFA are esterified on glycerophospholipids (GP). GP are the primary constituents of the lipid bilayer of cell membranes. PUFA can be also esterified on a specific class of GP, called plasmalogens. Plasmalogens are characteriz…
