Enhancing strategy design and planning in public utilities through “dynamic” balanced scorecards: insights from a project in a city water company

2008

In the last decade there has been an increasing effort to provide public utilities managers with planning and control tools, to take into account not only operational but also strategic issues. Among them are customer satisfaction, internal business process efficiency, business image, and bargaining power against other counterparts (e.g., the municipal administration). Often, however, such an effort has been oriented to generate a large volume of data, focused only on financial indicators and on a static view of the relevant system. This paper shows how the use of “dynamic” balanced scorecards can significantly improve the planning process in a strategic learning perspective. Insights from …

Best practice strategies in business process redesign: an experimental study

2012

This paper presents investigates the determinants for best practices’ adoption in business process redesign. Specifically, we evaluate the role of the best practices in business process redesign by exploring their adoption dependences from the process typology and the goals of the redesign project. In order to answer to our research questions, we conducted an experimental study over 18 business process redesign projects carried out by 18 teams of students. The experimental study shows that there exists a business practice strategic orientation in redesigning a process, i.e. evident correlations exist among the adoption of specific practices with the adoption of other specific practices, but…

Iterative sparse matrix-vector multiplication for accelerating the block Wiedemann algorithm over GF(2) on multi-graphics processing unit systems

2012

SUMMARY The block Wiedemann (BW) algorithm is frequently used to solve sparse linear systems over GF(2). Iterative sparse matrix–vector multiplication is the most time-consuming operation. The necessity to accelerate this step is motivated by the application of BW to very large matrices used in the linear algebra step of the number field sieve (NFS) for integer factorization. In this paper, we derive an efficient CUDA implementation of this operation by using a newly designed hybrid sparse matrix format. This leads to speedups between 4 and 8 on a single graphics processing unit (GPU) for a number of tested NFS matrices compared with an optimized multicore implementation. We further present…

L-Band Vegetation optical depth and effective scattering albedo estimation from SMAP

2017

Abstract Over land the vegetation canopy affects the microwave brightness temperature by emission, scattering and attenuation of surface soil emission. Attenuation, as represented by vegetation optical depth (VOD), is a potentially useful ecological indicator. The NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission carries significant potential for VOD estimates because of its radio frequency interference mitigation efforts and because the L-band signal penetrates deeper into the vegetation canopy than the higher frequency bands used for many previous VOD retrievals. In this study, we apply the multi-temporal dual-channel retrieval algorithm (MT-DCA) to derive global VOD, soil moisture, and ef…

Specification of Business Components

2003

Component-based software development is a potential reuse paradigm for the future. While the required technologies for a component-style system development are widely available, for instance Sun's Enterprise Java Beans, a problem inhibits the breakthrough of the component paradigm in business applacation domains: compared to traditional engineering disciplines there is a lack of standardized methods to describe business components. Such a description has to address several aspects: What services are offered and requested by a business component? How can these services be used? Are there any interdependencies between the services of a set of business components? What quality characteristics …

Business Modelling. Languages and Tools

2004

The paper provides an overview of business modelling techniques — both at language and tool level. The basic elements of some most popular business modelling languages are briefly outlined, including the GRAPES-BM language developed by IMCS, University of Latvia. The paper presents also the basic principles, how metamodel based generic modelling techniques can be used for supporting several modelling notations simultaneously.

Asynchronous Runtime Verification of Business Processes

2015

The authors propose a runtime verification mechanism for business processes. This mechanism allows verifying the correctness of business process execution and it runs in parallel with the base processes affecting them insignificantly. The authors have identified the case where the use of business process runtime verification is helpful and applicable. The verification mechanism monitors the business process execution and verifies compliance with the base process description. The verification mechanism prototype was developed and tested in real business processes, as well as limits of runtime verification overhead were evaluated.

Information Systems and Business Strategy

2003

The main purpose of this chapter is to deep into the importance attached to the Information Systems for the proper formulation of the corporate strategy. After introducing the basis of the strategic planning tradition model, which suggests the subordination of the Information Systems (IS) to the Business Strategy, we propose a new model that views the IS as an strategic instrument suited for the strategy formulation stage, rather than operational tools for the strategy control phase. Success in the application of this model we call “Concurrent Business/IS Strategic Planning Model” will closely depend on the consistency, coherence and soundness of the IS, both internal and external. In order…
