Towards an international language for incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD): design and evaluation of psychometric properties of the Ghent Global …

2018

Background Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is a specific type of irritant contact dermatitis with different levels of severity. An internationally accepted instrument to assess the severity of IAD in adults with established diagnostic accuracy, agreement, and reliability is needed to support clinical practice and research. Objectives To design and psychometrically evaluate the Ghent Global IAD Categorisation Tool (GLOBIAD).Methods The design was based on expert consultation using a three-round Delphi procedure with 34 experts from 13 countries. The instrument was tested using IAD photographs reflecting different severity levels in a sample of 823 health professionals in 30 countries…

Indication Variability in Degenerative Lumbar Spine Surgery: A Four-nation Survey.

2017

Electronic survey. The aim of this study was to identify the international nuances in surgical treatment patterns for severals lumbar degenerative conditions, specifically, to identify differences in responses in each country groupand different treatment trends across countries.Significant variations in treatment of lumbar degenerative conditions exist among spine surgeons, related to the lack of established consensus in the literature. An online survey with preformulated answers was submitted to 52 orthopedic surgeons, 50 neurosurgeons from four different countries (United States, France, Spain, and Germany) regarding five vignette-cases. Cases included: multilevel stenosis, monolevel stenos…

Clinical Epidemiological Survey of Legionella pneumophila Infections in Italy

1986

A clinical epidemiological survey of Legionella pneumophila infections occurring in Italy between 1 December 1985 and 31 May 1986 was carried out to evaluate the incidence of sporadic, epidemic and nosocomial L. pneumophila pneumonia. A total of 355 cases of pneumonia were studied of which 11.5% were due to Gram positive bacteria, 11% were due to Gram negative bacteria, 7.9% were due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae, 4.5% were due to L. pneumophila and 8.5% were due to sundry aetiological agents. The remainder (45.6%) could not be diagnosed accurately. In addition, the anti L. pneumophila antibody titres were assessed. The results are discussed in terms of the occurrence of the disease in Italy an…

Usefulness of routine hepatitis C and hepatitis B serology in the diagnosis of recent-onset arthritis. Systematic prospective screening in all patien…

2012

Ansemant, Thiphaine | Ornetti, Paul | Garrot, Jean-Francois | Pascaud, Francoise | Tavernier, Christian | Maillefert, Jean-Francis; International audience; ''Objective: Previous studies evaluating the usefulness of systematic screening for hepatitis B and C in patients with recent-onset arthritis suffered from a major bias since they were conducted in hospitals. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the relevance of such screening, performed by hospital and office-based rheumatologists of a defined area, in the diagnosis of arthritis or inflammatory polyarthralgia of less than 1 year duration. Methods: The CRRRI is a network which includes most hospital and office-based rheumat…

Patients' and relatives' perceptions about intravenous and subcutaneous hydration.

2005

Hydration during palliative care is a controversial topic. Most of the arguments are based on anedoctal reports that have not been substantiated with scientific data. Given that the choice is problematic from a clinical perspective, preferences of patients and family should dictate whether intravenous fluids are administered. The aim of this study was to evaluate patient and family perceptions about hydration and two modes of providing hydration. Fifty-four consecutive patients admitted to an acute pain relief and palliative care unit who required hydration completed a questionnaire regarding their perceptions on hydration and modes of hydration. Similarly, the principal family carer was ch…

Occupation, education, and Parkinson's disease: A case-control study in an Italian population

1996

Current epidemiologic data on the association between occupational exposures and Parkinson's disease (PD) are inconsistent. In a case-control study, we investigated the associations between occupation and PD and between education and PD. The cases (n = 62) were those identified in a prevalence survey (door-to-door, two-phase) of three Sicilian municipalities, as a November 1, 1987. We then randomly selected from the general population two controls for each case, matched for age ( +/- year), sex, and municipality (n = 124). Information on current and past occupations and education for cases and controls was obtained during the survey. Subjects who worked for most of their lives as farmers we…

High Titers of Thyrotropin Receptor Antibodies Are Associated With Orbitopathy in Patients With Graves Disease.

2018

AbstractContextSerum TSH receptor autoantibody (TSH-R-Ab) is a biomarker of Graves disease (GD). Studies have shown that the levels of this TSH-R-Ab have clinical significance.ObjectiveTo differentiate between thyroidal GD only and Graves orbitopathy (GD + GO).DesignControlled, follow-up study.SettingAcademic tertiary referral center for GD + GO.SubjectsSixty patients with GD, GD + GO, and controls.InterventionSerial serum dilution analyses with six automated, ELISA, and cell-based assays for TSH-R-Ab.Main Outcome MeasureDifferentiation among GD phenotypes.ResultsAll undiluted samples of hyperthyroid-untreated GD patients were positive with the six assays but became negative at dilution 1:9…

Total Versus Near-total Thyroidectomy in Graves Disease

2019

Previous data suggest that the incidence of hypoparathyroidism after surgery for Graves disease (GD) is lower after subtotal thyroidectomy compared to total thyroidectomy (TT). The present study evaluated the incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism after near-total (NTT) versus TT in GD.In a multicenter prospective randomized controlled clinical trial, patients with GD were randomized intraoperatively to NTT or TT. Primary endpoint was the incidence of transient postoperative hypoparathyroidism. Secondary endpoints were permanent hypoparathyroidism, transient recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP), reoperations for bleeding, inadvertently removed parathyroid glands, and recurrent hype…

Descriptive and follow-up study of patients treated surgically for abdominal aortic aneurysm at tertiary hospitals in Spain.

2019

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to assess potential variability in the clinical characteristics and treatment of patients undergoing elective surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) across five hospitals in Spain. METHODS Multicenter, retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with AAA and treated with open surgical repair (OSR) or endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). We evaluated clinical and demographic variables, including comorbidity (Charlson Comorbidity Index [CCI]); anatomic characteristics; surgical risk (ASA Score); aneurysm characteristics; and in-hospital and overall mortality. All patients were followed for three years. RESULTS A total of 186 patients were include…

Antigen-Specific Immunotherapy with Thyrotropin Receptor Peptides in Graves' Hyperthyroidism: A Phase I Study

2019

Background: Graves' disease is one of the most common autoimmune conditions, but treatment remains imperfect. This study explores the first-in-human use of antigen-specific immunotherapy with a combination of two thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) peptides (termed ATX-GD-59) in Graves' hyperthyroidism. Methods: Twelve participants (11 female) with previously untreated mild to moderate Graves' hyperthyroidism were enrolled in a Phase I open label trial to receive 10 doses of ATX-GD-59 administered intradermally over an 18-week period. Adverse events, tolerability, changes in serum free thyroid hormones, and TSHR autoantibodies were measured. Results: Ten subjects received all 10 doses of ATX-GD-59,…
