Facing Democratic Crisis in the EU: the New European Citizens’ Initiative Regulation

2020

For some scholars, the possibilities for diminishing the European democratic deficit and the Union’s legitimacy crisis are intertwined with the creation of a European demos and a European public sphere, that, in turn, can create a European civil solidarity. The European citizens’ initiative, which has recently been re-regulated, was precisely designed to help to solve these problems. As we shall see, the new Regulation includes a whole series of positive technical issues that will improve the usage of the mechanism. However, the European citizens’ initiative is still far from being a popular initiative and, therefore, to contribute to diminish the perception of distance between institutions…

The Committee of the Regions: A Springboard for the Citizens

2013

Abstract This study focuses on the relation between the Committee of the Regions (CoR), an advisory institution of the European Union defined as the political assembly of holders of a regional or local electoral mandate serving the cause of European integration, and the democratic deficit, understood as the effective ways of citizens’ participation in the institutional decision making. The work hypothesis is that the CoR, in spite of being mostly unknown to citizens, could be an effective tool for tackling the democratic deficit. Through qualitative interviews and surveys at different levels, the article analyzes the current situation and the potential opportunities of the CoR in its relati…

2023

The article examines the legislative proposal on medically assisted death by the working group 'Per un diritto gentile', reviewing its contents through the lens of ECHR case law and the Spanish Ley Orgánica de regulación de la eutanasía. The comparative analysis sheds light on the need for additional safeguards to protect patients' autonomy and ensure that medical professionals comply with their informed, free from any pressure or abuse will.

2015

In La Géométrie, Descartes proposed a “balance” between geometric constructions and symbolic manipulation with the introduction of suitable ideal machines. In particular, Cartesian tools were polynomial algebra (analysis) and a class of diagrammatic constructions (synthesis). This setting provided a classification of curves, according to which only the algebraic ones were considered “purely geometrical.” This limit was overcome with a general method by Newton and Leibniz introducing the infinity in the analytical part, whereas the synthetic perspective gradually lost importance with respect to the analytical one—geometry became a mean of visualization, no longer of construction. Descartes’s…

Remote Sensing Image Classification with Large Scale Gaussian Processes

2017

Current remote sensing image classification problems have to deal with an unprecedented amount of heterogeneous and complex data sources. Upcoming missions will soon provide large data streams that will make land cover/use classification difficult. Machine learning classifiers can help at this, and many methods are currently available. A popular kernel classifier is the Gaussian process classifier (GPC), since it approaches the classification problem with a solid probabilistic treatment, thus yielding confidence intervals for the predictions as well as very competitive results to state-of-the-art neural networks and support vector machines. However, its computational cost is prohibitive for…

Nowcasting COVID‐19 incidence indicators during the Italian first outbreak

2020

A novel parametric regression model is proposed to fit incidence data typically collected during epidemics. The proposal is motivated by real-time monitoring and short-term forecasting of the main epidemiological indicators within the first outbreak of COVID-19 in Italy. Accurate short-term predictions, including the potential effect of exogenous or external variables are provided. This ensures to accurately predict important characteristics of the epidemic (e.g., peak time and height), allowing for a better allocation of health resources over time. Parameter estimation is carried out in a maximum likelihood framework. All computational details required to reproduce the approach and replica…

Social media as a strategic marketing tool in the Sicilian wine industry: Evidence from Facebook

2017

Abstract Over the last few years, many companies have integrated social media, and social networking sites in particular, into their communication and media plan, leading to a deep transformation of the organizational models and changing the companies׳ marketing dynamics. This study has dual aims: first, to recognize and validate the firm׳s social media (SM) efforts in its use of the Facebook platform; second, to examine the relationships among the firm׳s SM efforts and some firm and managerial characteristics. In order to achieve these research aims, data on 45 wineries were collected and analysed, using a model that considers three different dimensions of the firms׳ activity on the social…

"We fangirls need our fanservice" : a study on the topics of discussion in a predominantly female online football community

2013
