Kinetic Roughening in Slow Combustion of Paper

2001

Results of experiments on the dynamics and kinetic roughening of one-dimensional slow-combustion fronts in three grades of paper are reported. Extensive averaging of the data allows a detailed analysis of the spatial and temporal development of the interface fluctuations. The asymptotic scaling properties, on long length and time scales, are well described by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with short-range, uncorrelated noise. To obtain a more detailed picture of the strong-coupling fixed point, characteristic of the KPZ universality class, universal amplitude ratios, and the universal coupling constant are computed from the data and found to be in good agreement with theory. Quantitative tests of mode-coupling theory for fragile and strong glass-formers

We calculate for a binary mixture of Lennard-Jones particles the time dependence of the solution of the mode-coupling equations in which the full wave vector dependence is taken into account. In addition we also take into account the short time dynamics, which we model with a simple memory kernel. We find that the so obtained solution agrees very well with the time and wave vector dependence of the coherent and incoherent intermediate scattering functions as determined from molecular dynamics computer simulations. Finite-size scaling at the dynamical transition of the mean-field 10-state Potts glass

We use Monte Carlo simulations to study the static and dynamical properties of a Potts glass with infinite range Gaussian distributed exchange interactions for a broad range of temperature and system size up to N=2560 spins. The results are compatible with a critical divergence of the relaxation time tau at the theoretically predicted dynamical transition temperature T_D, tau \propto (T-T_D)^{-\Delta} with Delta \approx 2. For finite N a further power law at T=T_D is found, tau(T=T_D) \propto N^{z^\star} with z^\star \approx 1.5 and for T>T_D dynamical finite-size scaling seems to hold. Transient behavior of a population dynamical model

The transient behavior of an ecosystem with N random interacting species in the presence of a multiplicative noise is analyzed. The multiplicative noise mimics the interaction with the environment. We investigate different asymptotic dynamical regimes and the role of the external noise on the probability distribution of the local field.

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich Heavy-Ion at intermediate energies has been recently proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear equation of state (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. Xenon detectors are used in the search for dark matter and neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta})$. As the next-generation detectors reach masses in the ton scale, neutrinos from astrophysical sources are soon predicted to become background in such detectors. Calculated solar-neutrino capture rate for a radiochemical 205Tl-based solar-neutrino detector

Radiochemical experiments for low-energy solar-neutrino detection have been making headlines by exploiting the isotopes 37Cl and 71Ga. Such a very low-threshold measurement of this type can also be performed using 205Tl, which has been considered for decades for this purpose. A unique feature of this detector nucleus is the integration in the solar-neutrino flux over 106 of years owing to its long-living daughter 205Pb. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy associated with polyarteritis nodosa: A case of sudden cardiac death

This case concerns a rare sudden cardiac death characterized by macroscopic and microscopic postmortem findings of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polyarteritis nodosa. A complete autopsy was carried out, and histological and histochemical methods were employed. The cause of death was acute multifocal ischemic myocitolitic damage caused by both myocardial structural alteration attributable to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (widespread interstitial fibrosis and multifocal myocyte disarray) and coronary arteritis attributable to polyarteritis nodosa. This is the first case in which the cause of death was attributed to both diseases.
