Nonlinear response theory for Markov processes II: Fifth-order response functions

2017

The nonlinear response of stochastic models obeying a master equation is calculated up to fifth-order in the external field thus extending the third-order results obtained earlier (G. Diezemann, Phys. Rev. E{\bf 85}, 051502 (2012)). For sinusoidal fields the $5\om$-component of the susceptibility is computed for the model of dipole reorientations in an asymmetric double well potential and for a trap model with a Gaussian density of states. For most realizations of the models a hump is found in the higher-order susceptibilities. In particular, for the asymmetric double well potential model there are two characteristic temperature regimes showing the occurence of such a hump as compared to a …

Heterogeneous Interactions between Gas-Phase Pyruvic Acid and Hydroxylated Silica Surfaces: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

2019

The adsorption of gas-phase pyruvic acid (CH3COCOOH) on hydroxylated silica particles has been investigated at 296 K using transmission Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and theoretical simulations. Under dry conditions (<1% relative humidity, RH), both the trans-cis (Tc) and trans-trans (Tt) pyruvic acid conformers are observed on the surface as well as the (hydrogen bonded) pyruvic acid dimer. The detailed surface interactions were further understood through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Under higher relative humidity conditions (above 10% RH), adsorbed water competes for surface adsorption sites. Adsorbed water is also observed to change the relative populations …

Smoothed Spherical Truncation based on Fuzzy Membership Functions: Application to the Molecular Encoding.

2019

A novel spherical truncation method, based on fuzzy membership functions, is introduced to truncate interatomic (or interaminoacid) relations according to smoothing values computed from fuzzy membership degrees. In this method, the molecules are circumscribed into a sphere, so that the geometric centers of the molecules are the centers of the spheres. The fuzzy membership degree of each atom (or aminoacid) is computed from its distance with respect to the geometric center of the molecule, by using a fuzzy membership function. So, the smoothing value to be applied in the truncation of a relation (or interaction) is computed by averaging the fuzzy membership degrees of the atoms (or aminoacid…

Comparative hydroamination of aniline and substituted anilines with styrene on different zeolites, triflate based catalysts and their physical mixtur…

2014

Abstract Catalytic performances of different zeolites (Beta and mordenites), scandium triflate based catalysts, mesoporous UVM-7 encapsulated scandium triflate and physical mixtures prepared under ultrasound irradiation were evaluated in the hydroamination of aniline and substituted anilines with styrene. The performances of these catalysts were controlled by the type of acidity and strength. Thus, the conversion was mainly controlled by the strength of the acid sites and their accessibility, while the selectivity appeared to be controlled by the Lewis/Bronsted type of acidity. Lewis acid catalysts directed the reactions mainly to the formation of the Markovnikov adducts while Bronsted acid…

Measuring rill erosion using structure from motion: A plot experiment

2017

Abstract In this paper the results of a plot experiment on rill erosion are reported. The rill network, manually incised on the soil and further shaped by a clear inflow discharge, was surveyed using the three-dimensional photo-reconstruction (3D-PR) technique which allows to obtain a digital terrain model (DTM) by a large series of oblique images of the channel from consumer un-calibrated and non-metric cameras. The three-dimensional (3D) DTM and the quasi-tridimensional (2.5D) model were generated by Agisoft Photoscan software. For a single rill channel, the reliability of the 3D image-based ground measurements of morphological and hydraulic variables was positively tested by the correspo…

Three X-ray Flares Near Primary Eclipse of the RS CVn Binary XY UMa

2016

We report on an archival X-ray observation of the eclipsing RS CVn binary XY UMa ($\rm P_{orb}\approx$ 0.48d). In two $\emph{Chandra}$ ACIS observations spanning 200 ks and almost five orbital periods, three flares occurred. We find no evidence for eclipses in the X-ray flux. The flares took place around times of primary eclipse, with one flare occurring shortly ($<0.125\rm P_{orb}$) after a primary eclipse, and the other two happening shortly ($<0.05\rm P_{orb}$) before a primary eclipse. Two flares occurred within roughly one orbital period ($\Delta \phi\approx1.024\rm P_{orb}$) of each other. We analyze the light curve and spectra of the system, and investigate coronal length scales both…

Kinematics, deformation partitioning and late Variscan magmatism in the Agly massif, Eastern Pyrenees, France

2020

International audience; In order to constrain the finite deformation pattern of the Variscan basement of the Agly massif, a detailed structural analysis over the whole Agly massif was performed. Our investigation combined geological mapping, reappraisal of published and unpublished data completed with our own structural work. Results are provided in the form of new tectonic maps and series of regional cross-sections through the Agly massif. At variance from previous studies, we identified three deformation fabrics named D1, D2 and D3. The D1 deformation is only relictual and characterized by a broadly northwest-southeast striking and eastward dipping foliation without any clear mineral and …

On numerical broadening of particle size spectra: a condensational growth study using PyMPDATA 1.0

2021

Abstract. The work discusses the diffusional growth in particulate systems such as atmospheric clouds. It focuses on the Eulerian modeling approach in which the evolution of the probability density function describing the particle size spectrum is carried out using a fixed-bin discretization. The numerical diffusion problem inherent to the employment of the fixed-bin discretization is scrutinized. The work focuses on the applications of MPDATA family of numerical schemes. Several MPDATA variants are explored including: infinite-gauge, non-oscillatory, third-order-terms and recursive antidiffusive correction (double pass donor cell, DPDC) options. Methodology for handling coordinate transfor…

Diving into exoplanets: Are water seas the most common?

2019

One of the basic tenets of exobiology is the need for a liquid substratum in which life can arise, evolve, and develop. The most common version of this idea involves the necessity of water to act as such a substratum, both because that is the case on Earth and because it seems to be the most viable liquid for chemical reactions that lead to life. Other liquid media that could harbor life, however, have occasionally been put forth. In this work, we investigate the relative probability of finding superficial seas on rocky worlds that could be composed of nine different, potentially abundant, liquids, including water. We study the phase space size of habitable zones defined for those substance…

Spectral alignment of multi-temporal cross-sensor images with automated kernel canonical correlation analysis

2015

In this paper we present an approach to perform relative spectral alignment between optical cross-sensor acquisitions. The proposed method aims at projecting the images from two different and possibly disjoint input spaces into a common latent space, in which standard change detection algorithms can be applied. The system relies on the regularized kernel canonical correlation analysis transformation (kCCA), which can accommodate nonlinear dependencies between pixels by means of kernel functions. To learn the projections, the method employs a subset of samples belonging to the unchanged areas or to uninteresting radiometric differences. Since the availability of ground truth information to p…
