Diterpenoids from Tetraclinis articulata that Inhibit Various Human Leukocyte Functions

2003

Ten new compounds, eight of them pimarane derivatives (1-8), together with a menthane dimer (9) and a totarane diterpenoid (10), were isolated from the leaves and wood of Tetraclinis articulata. The structures of 1-10 were established by using spectroscopic techniques, including 2D NMR spectra. Pimaranes 1-5 were found to possess an unusual cis interannular union of the B and C rings, which, from a biogenetic perspective, could be derived from the hydration of a carbocation at C-8. Compounds 4-6 and a mixture of 7 and 11 modulated different human leukocyte functions at a concentration of 10 microM, mainly the degranulation process measured as myeloperoxidase release and, to a lesser extent,…

Two-carbon metabolites, polyphenols and vitamins influence yeast chronological life span in winemaking conditions

2012

Abstract Background Viability in a non dividing state is referred to as chronological life span (CLS). Most grape juice fermentation happens when Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells have stopped dividing; therefore, CLS is an important factor toward winemaking success. Results We have studied both the physical and chemical determinants influencing yeast CLS. Low pH and heat shorten the maximum wine yeast life span, while hyperosmotic shock extends it. Ethanol plays an important negative role in aging under winemaking conditions, but additional metabolites produced by fermentative metabolism, such as acetaldehyde and acetate, have also a strong impact on longevity. Grape polyphenols quercet…

Solubility and diffusion of nitrogen in maltodextrin/protein tablets.

2002

The gas transport properties of compacted tablets consisting of an amorphous mixture of maltodextrin and sodium caseinate were studied by dissolving nitrogen gas in the tablets and then determining the gas release over time as a function of temperature and water activity. Gas was dissolved in the tablet matrix by heating the tablets under pressure, generally to temperatures above the glass transition temperature of the matrix, holding them at these conditions for a specified time and then rapidly cooling them while maintaining the external pressure. The solubility of nitrogen was found to be largely determined by the free volume of the matrix, which in turn can be influenced to some degree …

Ergosterol biosynthesis: a fungal pathway for life on land?

2012

International audience; Sterols, essential lipids of most eukaryotic cells, ensure important structural and signaling functions. The selection pressure that has led to different dominant sterols in the three eukaryotic kingdoms remains unknown. Here, we investigated the influence of the progression in the different steps of the ergosterol biosynthetic pathway (EBP) on the yeast resistance to transitions from aqueous to aerial media, typical perturbations of the higher fungi habitats. Five mutants of the EBP (ergΔ), accumulating different sterol intermediates in the EBP, and the wild-type (WT) strain were exposed to drying under atmospheric air or nitrogen and wetting. Results show that the …

Basal catalase activity and high glutathione levels influence the performance of non-Saccharomyces active dry wine yeasts.

2020

Non-Saccharomyces wine yeasts are useful tools for producing wines with complex aromas or low ethanol content. Their use in wine would benefit from their production as active dry yeast (ADY) starters to be used as co-inocula alongside S. cerevisiae. Oxidative stress during biomass propagation and dehydration is a key factor in determining ADY performance, as it affects yeast vitality and viability. Several studies have analysed the response of S. cerevisiae to oxidative stress under dehydration conditions, but not so many deal with non-conventional yeasts. In this work, we analysed eight non-Saccharomyces wine yeasts under biomass production conditions and studied oxidative stress parameter…

Nosacīta pirmstermiņa atbrīvošana no soda

2021

Rapid extraction of short-lived isotopes from a buffer gas cell for use in gas-phase chemistry experiments. Part I: Off-line studies with  219Rn and …

2021

Abstract To study the chemical properties of the heaviest elements, a fast and efficient stopping and extraction of the highly energetic residues from heavy ion fusion reactions into the chemistry setup is essential. Currently used techniques like Recoil Transfer Chambers (RTC) relying on gas flow extraction provide high efficiencies for chemically non-reactive volatile species, but operate at extraction times t extr of about 0.5 s or more. Buffer Gas Cells (BGC) with electric and Radio-Frequency (RF) fields offer much faster extraction times. Here, we demonstrate the successful coupling of a BGC to a gas chromatography setup as is used for studies of chemical properties of superheavy eleme…
