Patterns of Puffing Activity in the Polytene Chromosomes of Drosophila Subobscura

The puffs and Balbiani rings are the visible expression of sites of genetic activity (Beerman, 1952). Since Beermann’s original hypothesis, puffing patterns for several species of Diptera have been described. Thus for the genus Drosophila, Ashburner (1967, 1969a and 1969b) has reported the puffing pattern of Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila simulans, Beredens (1965) of Drosophila hydei, and Moriwaki and Ito (1969) of Drosophila ananassae. Liquid co-substrates repower sewage microbiomes

AbstractA range of parameters are known to shape the methanogenic communities of biogas-producing digesters and to strongly influence the amount of biogas produced. In this work, liquid and solid fractions of grass biomass were used separately for semicontinuous batch methanation using sewage sludge as seed sludge. During 6 months of incubation, the amount of input COD was increased gradually, and the underlying methanogenic microbiome was assessed by means of microscopy-based automated cell counting and full-length 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. In this sense, we prove for the first time the suitability of the ONT™MinION platform as a monitoring tool for anaerobic digestion systems. …

The 6th EDGG Research Expedition took place in summer 2013 in the Kuznetsky Alatau Mountains, part of the Altai-Sayanian mountain region (Republic of Khakassia, Russia). A group of 14 scientists from seven countries studied the variety of steppe vegetation in two regions of the "Khakassky" Reserve – Lake Itkul (Shira region) and Podzaploty (Ordzhenikidzevsky region). Standardised sampling procedures including nested-plot series and phytosociological relevés of 10-m2 plots were used to sample steppes of European-Siberian (Festuco-Brometea) and Central Asian (Cleistogenetea squarrosae) types. In this paper the results of a phytosociological study carried out on some aspects of shrub vegetation of forest margins are presented, investigated in the higher belt of the Madonie Mts. (Northern-Central Sicily), referred to the order Prunetalia spinosae (Rhamno-Prunetea). The correlation between liver stiffness, measured by transient elastography, liver fibrosis, using the histological METAVIR score, and iron overload, measured by atomic absorption spectrometry was evaluated in 56 homozygous-b-thalassaemics. Liver stiffness increased proportionally to liver fibrosis staging (r = 0Æ70; P > 0Æ001) independently of liver iron concentration (r = 0Æ01; P = 0Æ932). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for prediction of cirrhosis was 0Æ997 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0Æ925–1Æ000) with cut-off of 13 kPa with 100% sensitivity (95% CI: 69Æ0–100Æ0) and 95% specificity (95% CI: 84Æ2–99Æ3). Ievads: Striae distensae (SD) ir ādas bojājumi, kurus novēro liela daļa cilvēku. To cēloņi var būt fizioloģiski un patoloģiski. Ir apspriests, ka tie izraisa pašapziņas samazināšanos, tomēr standartizēta novērtēšanas metode medicīnā nav izmantota. Mērķis: Šī pētījuma mērķis ir noskaidrot, cik daudz SD ietekmē dzīves kvalitāti (QoL); vai SD raksturlielumi korelē ar QoL un citiem respondenta faktoriem. Papildus tiks analizēta SD profilakse un ārstēšana respondentu vidū. Parlamenta deputātu viedokļu pētījumos Zviedrijā un Beļģijā tika secināts, ka masu mediji ir vieni no ietekmīgākajiem politiskās dienaskārtības noteicējiem līdzās premjerministram un politiskajām partijām. Iedvesmojoties no iepriekšējos pētījumos paustajām atziņām, tika īstenots Saeimas deputātu pētījums, atklājot parlamentāriešu viedokļus par masu mediju varu uz nacionālā līmeņa dienaskārtības noteikšanu. Tutkielmassani analysoin ikonografian avulla japanilaisen taiteilijan Toshio Saekin töitä Japanin modernin ajan modan gaaru (suom. moderni tyttö)-ilmiön valossa. Tukielma keskittyy modan gaaruun, joka oli Japanin massamedian luoma ilmiö uudesta radikaalista naisesta. Modan gaaru syntyi modernin ajan historiallisten sekä sosiaalisten muutosten seurauksena ja vaikutti myös maan poliittiseen ilmapiiriin. Tutkielma käsittelee myös ero guro nansensu-ilmiötä, shunga-taidetta ja japanilaisten naisten aseman historiaa ja kehitystä. In the textual tradition of a literary work, our sources (manuscripts, printed books etc.) commonly bear, together with the "main text", different kinds of "paratexts" commenting on it (including interlinear annotations, glosses, scholia, footnotes, modern scholarly introductions and commentaries, and many others). This article proposes a unified model for a document-based digital critical edition including both the 'main texts' and the 'paratexts' as they appear in different single sources.
