Abstract Objective We evaluated and quantified surgical trauma and late graft function in cases of hand-assisted laparoscopic living-donor nephrectomy (HALLDN) versus open living-donor nephrectom (OLDN). Methods This study is a retrospective nonrandomized single-center analysis. Between 1995 and January 2008, 82 patients with end-stage renal disease received kidney transplantations from living donors. Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of using phakic intraocular lenses (IOLs) to correct high myopia by comparing 3 IOL models: Adatomed, Staar, and Artisan. Setting: La Fe University Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, and the Fundacion Oftalmologica del Mediterraneo, Valencia, Spain. Methods: In this prospective comparative study, a phakic IOL was implanted in 217 highly myopic eyes (118 patients). Fifty-nine eyes received an Adatomed IOL, 21 eyes a Staar IOL, and 137 eyes an Artisan IOL. Changes in autonomic nervous system function have been related to work stress induced increases in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Our purpose was to examine whether various heart rate variability (HRV) measures and new HRV-based relaxation measures are related to self-reported chronic work stress and daily emotions. The relaxation measures are based on neural network modelling of individual baseline heart rate and HRV information. Background The aim of this study was to estimate accident risk rates and mental health of bus rapid transit (BRT) drivers based on psychosocial risk factors at work leading to increased stress and health problems. Methods A cross-sectional research design utilized a self-report questionnaire completed by 524 BRT drivers. Results Some working conditions of BRT drivers (lack of social support from supervisors and perceived potential for risk) may partially explain Bogota's BRT drivers' involvement in road accidents. The case of a man’s death as a consequence of an accident with a mountain bike was examined. Despite only slight external injuries, a general examination revealed the existence of a rupture of the diaphragm which was the ultimate cause of death. The discussion reconstructs the way the accident occurred and briefly analyses the consequences of safety design in two-wheeled vehicles.

Correlates of victim-blaming attitudes regarding partner violence against women among the Spanish general population.

This article analyzes correlates of victim-blaming attitudes regarding partner violence against women (PVAW) among the Spanish general population ( N = 1,006). Results showed that victim-blaming attitudes were more common among respondents who were older, less educated, and who placed themselves at the bottom of the social scale. Furthermore, the odds of expressing victim-blaming attitudes were higher among respondents who thought that PVAW was common in society, considered it more acceptable, and knew women victims of partner violence in their circle of friends and family. Implications for public education are discussed.
Finnish and American University Students Compared on a Verbal Aggression Construct

232 Finnish and 145 American university students showed no significant differences on Infante and Wigley's measure of verbal aggressiveness. In keeping with general stereotypes, the men of both cultures (88 Finns, 86 Americans) were more verbally aggressive than were the women (144 Finns, 59 Americans).
