Obesity Triples the Radiation Dose of Stone Protocol Computerized Tomography

Patients with recurrent nephrolithiasis are often evaluated and followed with computerized tomography. Obesity is a risk factor for nephrolithiasis. We evaluated the radiation dose of computerized tomography in obese and nonobese adults.We scanned a validated, anthropomorphic male phantom according to our institutional renal stone evaluation protocol. The obese model consisted of the phantom wrapped in 2 Custom Fat Layers (CIRS, Norfolk, Virginia), which have been verified to have the same radiographic tissue density as fat. Introduction. Massage is a physiotherapeutic treatment, commonly used in both therapy and restoration of normal body functions. The aim of this work was to determine the effects of skin massage on stimulating the expression of angiogenesis-initiating factors, i.e. VEGF-A, FGF-2 (bFGF) and CD34 and on skin regeneration processes. Is Ranibizumab effective in stopping the loss of vision for Choroidal Neovascularization in Pathologic Myopia? A Long Term Follow-up Study

Aim To assess the efficacy and safety of ranibizumab in the treatment of choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) caused by pathologic myopia (PM). Design Prospective, multicentre, interventional case series. Methods 40 eyes of 39 consecutive patients with PM and CNV were treated with ‘on demand’ intravitreal injection of ranibizumab 0.5 mg. Final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and its change from baseline were the main outcome measures. Changes in optical coherence tomography (OCT) central retinal thickness (CRT) were a secondary outcome. Results Mean age was 53±13 years and mean refractive error –13.5±6.5 D. Abstract Background In the male germ line of Drosophila chromatin remains decondensed and highly transcribed during meiotic prophase until it is rapidly compacted. Summary Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) – dabigatran, rivaroxaban, apixaban and edoxaban – are well established in terms of preventing stroke or systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation and high thromboembolism risk. When prescribed incorrectly, NOACs are associated with an increased risk of ischaemic events and bleeding. Current NOAC labels explicitly address dose adjustments according to age, body weight, renal function and concomitant treatment with P-glycoprotein inhibitors. There are different mechanisms leading to AS: maternal microdeletion, uniparental disomy, defects in a putative imprinting centre, mutations of the E3 ubiquitin protein ligase (UBE3A) gene. However, some of suspected cases of AS are still scored negative to all the latter mutations. Comparative multiplex dosage analysis in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 patients.

We developed a new application of comparative multiplex dosage analysis (CMDA) for evaluation of the ataxin 2 gene. Expansions of the triplet CAG can cause spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2), a neurodegenerative disease with an autosomal-dominant mode of inheritance. Molecular diagnosis of SCA2 is routinely based on the use of conventional PCR to detect the CAG expansion. However, PCR does not amplify an allele with an expansion of many triplets (>80), which is typically found in infantile and juvenile forms of SCA2, thus leading to false negatives.
