Local development as a result of a process of social innovation in Saint-Camille (Quebec) and Aras de los Olmos (Valencia)

2020

This article presents a comparative analysis of two t…

Devotees, A New Ordeal and A Sense of Belonging: Ethnography and Nethnography of Saint Agatha

2012

In 2004 and in 2008, the author conducted ethnographic research in Catania (Southern Italy) on one of the most important religious feasts in honor of Saint Agatha. This chapter relates Agatha's story, which is that of a Sicilian virgin martyr persecuted in the fourth century by a Roman proconsul. At the feast of St. Agatha, the three elements: the extra-ecclesial nature of popular religiosity, the transmission of knowledge through vehicles other than seminaries and other official religious institutions, and the expression of popular religiosity with signs and symbols that transmit the presence of the supernatural in everyday life, can be found. A starting point was to identify and understan…

A multiscale approach to liquid flows in pipes I: The single pipe

2012

Abstract In the present paper we study the propagation of pressure waves in a barotropic flow through a pipe, with a possibly varying cross-sectional area. The basic model is the Saint–Venant system. We derive two multiscale models for the cases of weak and strong damping, respectively, which describe the time evolution of the piezometric head and the velocity. If the damping is weak, then the corresponding first-order hyperbolic system is linear but contains an additional integro-differential equation that takes into account the damping. In the case of strong damping, the system is nonlinear. The full and multiscale models are compared numerically; we also discuss results obtained by a lar…

“Podalirius” o “Polidarius”? Da Arrigo da Settimello a Guido delle Colonne

2016

This paper is dedicated to the defence of the variant "Polidarius" (and not the correction in the vulgate "Podalirius") that occurs in all the manuscripts of Henry of Septimello's «Elegia» (book IV, line 209). "Polidarius", however, has many attestations in Medieval Troy literary tradition (Joseph of Exeter, Benoît de Sainte-Maure, Guido delle Colonne) and is an alternative, correct and good name for the famous mythical doctor, son of Asclepius and brother of Machaon.

2019

ABSTRACT: St. George was one of the best known figures in Christendom, due both to his unique story as well as for the help he gave to the various Spanish kingdoms in the fight against the enemies of Jesus Christ. His cult spread to New Spain where he was known, although not in the same manner as in Europe. But nevertheless, in the cathedral of the bishopric of Durango, the efforts of bishop Pedro Anselmo Sánchez de Tagle interests resulted in St. George being declared patron of the city in 1749 by both civil and ecclesiastical chapters. This event granted the saint another function: the fight against poisonous animals, specifically, the scorpions endemic to the region. As a result, the Sai…
