Waterfront and Transformation in Contexts of Conflict
2016
This chapter defines in what way the seaside and the waterfront can be place of conflicts among infrastructures, production, unplanned urbanisation, bathing tourism and many other activities. The last section of the chapter describes synthetically the study case of Saint-Nazare Submarine base and the terms of regeneration of a typically place of conflict, like a military area connected with the waterfront. The transformations underway in the waterfront areas present a variety of complex settlement dynamics that are ascribable to the infrastructural and productive nature of many activities, such as unplanned urbanisation, the pressures of bathing tourism and mass tourism, and the system of s…

2006
Between the IVth and the XVIIIth century in Burgundy (Nevers to Vezelay area), the number of pilgrimage churches have increased with an important renewal rate. Indeed, the choice of saints, institutions, or objects of devotion depends on various references. Adapting the framework and updating hagiography to the evolution of piety are means of preservation against disinterest and decreased gains. What is miraculous or not is changing and depends on unstable religious and social settings, therefore it becomes necessary to consider both important and sustainable sites than short-lived ones and vain attempts to develop a pilgrimage site. By resorting as much as possible to the original document…
TL-dating applied to building archaeology: The case of the medieval church Notre-Dame-Sous-Terre (Mont-Saint-Michel, France)
2007
Abstract The recent application of thermoluminescence (TL) dating to young building materials is being increasingly developed for use in the field of buildings archaeology [ Bailif, I.K., Holland, N., 2000. Śląska barokowa Litania o św. Barbarze, Pannie i Męczenniczce
2020
The article was dedicated to one of the prayers – the Litany to Saint Barbara – in a Baroque Polish-language prayer book addressed to this patroness. It was published in Wrocław in 1747 by the Jesuit order for a fraternity dedicated to Saint Barbara, who was then treated as the patron of a happy death. This confraternity was established in Tarnowskie Góry as the third one in Upper Silesia. However, for the recruitment of members from various regions of Silesia and the fi rst binding of the brotherhood to the mining community, he is given pioneer signifi cance. The booklet is unique, because only one copy has survived, which is now the property of the Society of Enthusiasts of the Tarnogórsk…
2019
The life of Elia the Younger (823-903), a native of Enna in the heart of Sicily, offers itself as an undoubtedly fascinating document in the narrative of political and religious events in the Mediterranean during the 9th century of our era. In Sicily, just a few years before the beginning of the Arab conquest of the island, Elia was born and his human and spiritual story is intertwined with the reality of his times. An expression of that Italo-Greek monasticism that flourished in the provinces of Southern Italy, Elia's life (like that of many of his contemporaries and countrymen) is also, if not above all, that of a tireless traveler. Each trip is an opportunity to visit monasteries, give p…
Saint François d’Assise is the only opera written by French composer Olivier Mes…
2019
The enigma of saint Lubin stained glass window at Chartres, showing a wine story in the middle of the saint’s life, can be resolved by a symbolic interpretation of it’s images, if paying regard to the medieval mental schemes : the central Eucharistic mystery of the wine enables the young Lubin to achieve sainthood, through his own vocation of consecrated (the learned canon of XIIth century appearing under the VIth century monk), priest and bishop, Good Sheperd dispensing divine gifts. The unusual presence of small human figures at the outer framework of the stained glass window emphasises the important role to be played by the laity in the Eucharistic mysteries. It takes part, with the intr…
