Accessory submaxillary gland : two new case reports and a literature review
2020
Background The accessory submaxillary gland is a very uncommon anatomical variant, and incidence in the general population has not yet been quantified. The presence of pathology in these glands is rarer still, thus often going unnoticed. Material and methods We describe two accessory submaxillary gland cases, one asymptomatic and the other with chronic sialadenitis in the main and accessory gland caused by sialolithiasis. Although our diagnosis was by computerized tomography, magnetic resonance sialography is helpful to understand and describe this entity with greater precision. Results The first case report is an incidental finding and no intervention was required. However, case report num…
OP0042 BLOCKING OF CD103+ TISSUE RESIDENT MEMORY T CELLS (TRM) AS A THERAPEUTIC STRATEGY IN SJOGREN’S SYNDROME
2021
Background:Tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM), are a recently identified T cells population featuring tissue localization and expression of markers of tissue homing, CD69 and CD103. Recently, the expansion of CD8+ TRMs and their involvement in the sialadenitis was described in a murine model of SS. However, CD4+ and CD8+ TRM’s functional relevance in pSS is still not fully understood, and the TRM therapeutic targeting unexplored. Objectives:The study aimed to address the role of CD4+ and CD8+ TRMs in the pathogenesis of pSS and to explore the therapeutic targeting of the tissue residency marker of TRM CD103.Methods:An animal model of experimental (ESS) obtained by immunization of female C5…

Sialoendoscopy: state of the art, challenges and further perspectives. Round Table, 101st SIO National Congress, Catania 2014
2015
This draft of the Official Round Table held during the 101(st) SIO National Congress is an updated review on sialoendoscopy, a technique used for diagnosis and treatment of obstructive pathologies of salivary glands in a minimally invasive fashion. This review treats many aspects of salivary gland endoscopy, starting from anatomy to deal with the more advanced surgical techniques and analyses the main decisional algorithms proposed in the literature. In addition, particular attention was directed to the current limitations of this technique and to the potential developments that sialoendoscopy could have in the near future.Questo testo è un estratto della Tavola Rotonda Istituzionale tenuta…
The relationship between the levels of salivary cortisol and the presence of xerostomia in menopausal women. A preliminary study.
2006

An updated insight into the Sialotranscriptome of Triatoma infestans: developmental stage and geographic variations
2014
Background Triatoma infestans is the main vector of Chagas disease in South America. As in all hematophagous arthropods, its saliva contains a complex cocktail that assists blood feeding by preventing platelet aggregation and blood clotting and promoting vasodilation. These salivary components can be immunologically recognized by their vector's hosts and targeted with antibodies that might disrupt blood feeding. These antibodies can be used to detect vector exposure using immunoassays. Antibodies may also contribute to the fast evolution of the salivary cocktail. Methodology Salivary gland cDNA libraries from nymphal and adult T. infestans of breeding colonies originating from different loc…
Sublingual gland neoplasms: clinicopathological study of 8 cases
2021
Background Sublingual gland neoplasms are very rare and the majority of them are malignant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical course, treatment, and outcomes of these uncommon neoplasms based on the authors’ experience and the recent literature. Material and Methods The medical charts of 8 patients with primary epithelial sublingual gland tumors treated between 1994 and 2020 were reviewed. Results Malignant tumors comprised 75% (6/8) of cases. Adenoid cystic carcinoma was the most common (50%, 3/6) and characterized by high risk of local recurrence and lung metastasis. Pleomorphic adenoma was the only representative of benign tumors with no evidence of local recurrence in f…
Sialadenoma papilliferum : bibliometric analysis
2019
Background Sialadenoma papilliferum is a benign rare condition of salivary glands showing a characteristic papillary growth of the ductal epithelium that ends up being confused with more frequent lesions of the oral cavity. Objectives: To perform a bibliometric analysis of all articles about Sialadenoma papilliferum in the oral cavity and to add a singular case report of Sialadenoma in the lower lip. Material and methods A total of 36 publications referring to Sialadenoma papilliferum in the oral cavity from the PubMed platform was reviewed. The specific data were collected, and a bibliometric analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel. The results obtained were then compared with this ne…
