Revisiting the didactic triangle: from the particular to the general

Instances of its application to classroom environments to demonstrate its representational capabilities are presented. In life sciences, the internet is an indispensable medium for research, but has not yet realized its full potential for teaching. The concept of e-learning has been developed over the past decades for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs. We set up an e-learning lecture on cancer biology and pharmacology that was first offered in 2003 to students of Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Heidelberg and to students of Pharmacy at the University of Mainz, Germany. A case of combined Farber and Sandhoff disease

We describe a patient with the biochemically established combination of Farber and Sandhoff disease. A 6-month-old girl of consanguineous Turkish parents presented with hoarseness, stridor, scattered skin nodules, painful swelling of hand joints and ankles, and cherry-red macular spots. Until the age of 2 years her motor and physical condition deteriorated distinctly, however her mental state remained unchanged. A biopsied skin nodule disclosed lysosomal inclusions within storage cells that were typical of Farber disease (curved tubular structures). Experience of medical students mentoring in an acute geriatric unit: Use of evidence-based medicine

International audience; n a retrospective study, we studied the learning experience of second and third year undergraduate medical students in the acute geriatric unit of a University Hospital.Students who did not receive Evidence based medicine (EBM) classes had lower grades than those who did in the final theoretical and practical evaluations (p < .01).Our experience suggested that the implementation of EBM in the curriculum through small, structured semiology courses tailored to the specificities of the elderly improved Evidence based practices for undergraduate medical students. EBM should improve instruction and mentoring during undergraduate students' clinical rotation.

Background The purpose of this study was to examine surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity of masticatory muscles before and after functional orthopaedic therapy with Sander appliance. The aim of this article is to investigate students’ narratives about their professional development process. This research brings new kind of knowledge to continuing learning, developing education and planning the curriculum in physiotherapy education. The European Qualification Framework (EQF) defines learning competences in education; qualitative research has a narrative approach. The material consists of eight voluntarily participating physiotherapy students’ portfolios written during their whole study time. The "sandwich technique" for iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens implantation.

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To describe a new technique of implantation of the Artisan/Verisyse phakic intraocular lens (PIOL). METHODS: After PIOL insertion into the anterior chamber, a bolus of a high viscosity ophthalmic viseosurgical device (OVD) is placed over the optic, separating it widely from the endothelium. RESULTS: The technique decreases the chance of endothelial damage during enclavation. CONCLUSIONS: A bolus of a high viscosity OVD placed on the anterior surface of the Artisan/Verisyse PIOL may make enclavation safer. [J Refract Surg. 2006;22:96-98.]

Running a hybrid: mingling in-service and pre-service teachers in peer-mentoring groups

his study examines a hybrid form of the Finnish Peer-Group Mentoring (PGM) merging student teachers and in-service teachers of different career stages in group meetings facilitated by an educated mentor. Experiences of the in-service participants were studied by interviewing them, and the data were analysed through thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified: 1) Enjoying group activities, 2) Personal professional development, 3) Attaching to the professional community and 4) Developing the teacher profession.
