PROSPECTIVE PRE-SCHOOL TEACHERS’ VIEWS ON STEM LEARNING IN GRADE 9: THE PRINCIPLE OF CONTINUITY IN EDUCATION

2022

The life quality of society and the stability of national economy is largely connected with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The complex character of STEM education demands informed teaching/learning strategies in order to make the 21st century youth interested in learning. The aim of the research was to find out the views of prospective pre-school teachers on Grade 9 students’ STEM learning, thus addressing the topical principle of continuity in education. A survey of 261 prospective pre-school teachers of the University of Latvia was performed. The obtained results show that in general the prospective pre-school teachers have some notion about the level of teachin…

Applied mathematics concepts Self-learning through the use of short educational videos

2019

It is sometimes difficult for the student to actively participate in the learning process due to the difficulty that teachers find when trying to cover all the contents of a course with sufficient time and attention. This lack of time prevents professors from properly stimulating the student's active participation in class, which is always necessary for achieving a deep and significant learning. The present paper describes a flipped-classroom-based methodology that fosters autonomous learning of applied mathematics contents through the use of short educational videos. The use of on-line media learning resources has dramatically increased in the last decade in higher education, not only unde…

Investigación e innovación en la Enseñanza de las Ciencias. Necesidad de una mayor vinculación.

2013

This paper analyzes the relationship between Research and Innovation in Science Teaching, showing a worrying disconnection of both activities. Two possible causes of this situation are considered: firstly, most teachers don¿t pay attention to science education research and even ignore the specific journals where this research is published; and secondly, researchers view innovation as mere application of research. As a result of these analyses, some proposals are advanced in order to make research more useful to improve science teaching and learning.

Satisfaction analysis of 'food safety and quality management' master degree's students with the 'comunicat' methodology for the enhancement of the 'e…

2019

The main goal of the present study is to analyze the satisfaction level of the students from the master degree "Food Safety and Quality Management" with the "ComunicaT" methodology, which was applied to improve the mastery level of the "Effective Oral Communication" student outcome. This methodology is being developed under an innovative and educational improvement research project funded by the Universitat Politècnica de València, and the general idea behind it is that the student, after performing an auto-diagnosis test, becomes capable to autonomously improve its oral communication skills. Thereby, the student, starting from his initial mastery level on this student outcome, follows a se…

THE CONE OF EXPERIENCE IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS SYNCHRONOUSLY AND ASYNCHRONOUSLY

2021

Teaching online is a new challenge for every single teacher. Mathematics in particular remains the school subject that requires special teaching tools. This article describes Edgar Dale’s «Cone of experience» and Bruner’s learning approaches for synchronous and asynchronous teaching in Mathematics. It also describes the most important tools that can be used for online teaching in a combination of both formats, asynchronous and synchronous. These teaching methods are described not only in terms of digital tools, but also in terms of Jerome Bruner’s theories on information processing.

Challenges in developing in-service teacher training: Lessons learnt from two projects for teachers of Swedish in Finland

2017

Teacher education in Finland is widely respected and of high quality. However, there is a recognised need to develop the educational continuum from pre-service education to in-service training. This article deals with challenges connected to in-service teacher training. Based on two projects, consisting of seven one-month courses for teachers of Swedish in Finland, we reflect on the challenges we encountered during the three-year process. In our research, theory and practice, but also data and methods, have been intertwined, as we have studied the phenomenon by using exploratory practice (Allwright, 2003). The projects and the study were based on a thorough literature review. During the pla…

Enhancing the Readership of Teacher Students With Digital Book Subscription Services

2020

This article aims to illustrate a 7-month trial of digital book subscription services in teacher education. Student teachers of the University of Turku in Finland were encouraged to implement the service as part of their free time reading. The experiences of the digital subscription service were investigated using a questionnaire, and data were analyzed through a combination of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. The aim of the study was to consider the value of digital book subscription services in terms of reading for pleasure and to describe the readership of teacher students as well as their assessment of digital book subscription services as a pedagogical approach for suppo…

La alfabetización digital y los géneros discursivos. Un proyecto de escritura digital con alumnos de cuarto de secundaria obligatoria (15-16 años)

2009

The concept of digital literacy, as a set of abilities to use Information and Communication Technologies, has gained nowadays a dimension which goes beyond instrumentalityability to use different technological resources and could be defined as the acquisition of competences related to the search, analysis, selection and communication of data and information which allow students to transform information into knowledge. Having this in mind and within the didactic tradition of language projects, we have carried out an experience involving students of 4th year of ESO (Compulsory Secondary School) during the school year 2006-2007. It has basically consisted in the elaboration of language and lit…

SimReal+ i matematikkundervisning på universitetsnivå En studie av lærerens orkestreringer i relasjon til verktøyets nytteverdi for studentene

2015

Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk- Universitetet i Agder, 2015 This thesis is a case study conducted in the first year of engineering studies at the University of Agder. The course observed is physics, where the software SimReal+ is integrated into the teaching. The study focuses the mathematical part of the course related to differentiation and integration. In my study, I focus on both the lecturer and students taking the course. The study examines the teacher-orchestrations that can be identified in lectures and exercises, and perceptions students have related to the usefulness of SimReal+ and some teacher-orchestrations. My research questions are: 1. What types of teacher-orchestrations …

Students of Religion Studying Social Conflict Through Simulation and Modelling: An Exploration

2020

Researchers at our university use modelling and simulation (M&S) to study religious conflicts, and we wanted to introduce undergraduate students of religion to this research approach. Hence, we started a three-year educational design research project to empirically study ways to introduce these students to M&S as a viable research method in their discipline. The research project will entail several iterations, which aim to have a feasible and effective design of lessons and a better understanding of the learning processes. The first iteration was exploratory and is reported here. For this exploration, we organised a seminar, which was videotaped for post hoc analysis. The seminar started wi…
