ICT for inquiry in mathematics: A developmental research approach

2009

Accepted version of an article published in the journal: Journal of computers in mathematics and science teaching Copyright 2009 by the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE). [http://www.aace.org] Included here by permission" Computers and calculators are in general widely used in Norwegian schools, but with limited use in specific school subjects, as particularly in mathematics teaching. Various reports from surveys and research projects indicate that teachers’ competence with ICT is a crucial point, and that teachers’ lack of knowledge of how to utilise software for mathematics is a key challenge for further development. In the project ICT and mathematics learni…

Virtual PhD courses – A new mode of PhD education?

2012

Published version of an article from the proceedings of the NOKOBIT conference. Also available from Tapir:http://www.tapironline.no/fil/vis/1029 This paper presents experiences from a joint virtual PhD course for doctoral students at a Norwegian and a US university. Based on an experiential learning approach, the course focused on practices for virtual research collaboration. Through six synchronous online sessions, interspersed with interaction in sub-teams, the participants worked on developing a joint conference publication. This gave the PhD students first-hand experience with working in a virtual research team. Based on our analysis of the experiences from the course, we discuss challe…

Engineering students approaching the mathematics textbook as a potential learning tool – opportunities and constraints

2016

Doktorgradsavhandling It is usually assumed that the students at tertiary level work intensively and individually with the new mathematical concepts (Wood, 2001). In this context the mathematics textbook might be an important learning tool. This thesis addresses the issue of what factors might influence the role of the mathematics textbook as a learning tool. The study is situated in the context of the basic mathematics course taken by first-year engineering students. A brief pilot study indicated that a majority of the students preferred using lecture notes rather than the textbook although in the beginning of the semester they perceived the textbook as being important when learning mathem…

The effect of culture on educational methodologies in international business programs: an application to the iMBA program

2012

As the world becomes global, there are growing needs and opportunities for intercultural exchanges in learning processes. In the context of the Spanish University Strategy for 2015, one of the most important objectives is to increase internationalisation through international postgraduate courses (Spanish Ministry of Education, 2010). Intercultural teaching capabilities are now becoming necessary for better achieving perceived service quality among international students. In the area of business studies, research on pedagogical issues is needed in order to provide recommendations and group management implications. For instance, a challenge for international business programs is dealing with…

Devices and digitized content in Primary Education

2017

Due to the latest changes in our society, it is necessary to offer students of different school stages new skills and abilities in line with current challenges. The digitization of curricular contents, the web accessibility and the use of mobile devices in the classrooms constitute one of the conditions to establish the new pedagogical order that is demanded for schools in the 21st century (Lindgren, 2015; Mishra & Koehler, 2006; Unesco, 2012). Education professionals must be aware that changing the media to transmit the curriculum content does not guarantee the achievement of good academic results. All of this makes us wonder: to what extent the presence of technologies can stimulate chang…

ELECTRONIC DICTIONARIES AND ESP STUDENTS

2010

This article presents the results of an experiment conducted on two distinct groups of students attending our ESP classes in the academic year 2009-2010. The first group was formed of second year students majoring in business and the second group first year students majoring in computer science. The experiment involved presenting the students with a list of traditional dictionaries as compulsory course bibliography and a list of free electronic and internet dictionaries as additional resources in an attempt to prove that, irrespective of their major subject, most students prefer freeware dictionaries for their usefulness, currentness and user-friendliness; that is why they should be taught …

Towards an Individualised Approach to Learners’ Errors

2011

When I started working as a school teacher (which was before I began my Ph.D. studies), I decided to try to come up with a clever way of marking my students’ written assignments, correcting the errors of weaker students and only underlining those made by better ones. I found quite soon that it was often hard for me to assess my students’ abilities properly, which I realised when I started getting complaints from them that they did not understand what their mistakes had been. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm decreased, and I began abandoning my practice of approaching errors made by students of different abilities differently. nonPeerReviewed

Modeling a teacher in a tutorial-like system using Learning Automata

2012

Published version of a chapter in the book: Transactions on Computational Collective Intelligence VIII. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-34645-3_2 The goal of this paper is to present a novel approach to model the behavior of a Teacher in a Tutorial- like system. In this model, the Teacher is capable of presenting teaching material from a Socratic-type Domain model via multiple-choice questions. Since this knowledge is stored in the Domain model in chapters with different levels of complexity, the Teacher is able to present learning material of varying degrees of difficulty to the Students. In our model, we propose that the Teacher will be able to as…

Pre-service Primary Teachers' Scientific Knowledge and Attitudes towards Science Learning and Their Influence on the Understanding of the Nature of S…

2016

The present study focused on the knowledge about the nature of science and the question of the extent to which this knowledge could be explained by employing scientific knowledge, as well as attitudes towards science learning. We obtained data from 171 Spanish pre-service primary school teachers on their knowledge about: a) science concepts, b) science process skills, c) the nature of science (that was split into science construction and validation and the role and function of scientific models), and d) their attitudes towards science learning. Quantitative and qualitative analyses provided interesting results: a) there were significant correlations between any pair of scores of conceptual …

Towards new challenges in Finnish pre-service teacher training

2015

Teacher training in Finland is facing a situation in which it is necessary to develop new ways to organize education according to the needs of the students and society. There is an increasing demand for a more flexible teacher study program that would make it possible for students to face the future challenges in more versatile ways. This qualitative study investigates pre-service teachers’ professional development during the 6 ECTS credits learning period in multiple authentic 21st Century learning environments in Primary school teacher training. This article provides an opportunity to discuss and develop primary school teacher training to help pre-service teachers to adapt themselves to f…
