Spaces of Identity: Gender, Ethnicity, and Race in Salome of the Tenements (1923) and Quicksand (1928)
2018
Abstract The 1920s marked a fervent time for artistic and literary expression in the United States. Besides the famous authors of the decade, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and William Faulkner, Anzia Yezierska and Nella Larsen, among other female writers, also managed to carve “a literary space” for their stories. Yezierska and Larsen depicted the struggles and tribulations of minority women during the fermenting 1920s, with a view to illustrating the impact of ethnicity and race on the individual female identity. Yezierska, a Jewish-American immigrant, and Larsen, a biracial American woman, share an interest in capturing the nuances of belonging to a particular community…

The meanings of differentiated instruction in the narratives of Eritrean teachers
2021
The principles of inclusive education largely accepted by governments of different countries require differentiated classroom instruction to meet the diverse needs of individual students. Despite this, teachers have differing experiences and understandings about implementing differentiated instruction (DI) and heterogeneous classrooms. This narrative study aimed at exploring the meanings of DI in the Eritrean context, where teachers are not explicitly familiar with the concept, although their teaching practices reflect some level of differentiation. The research data consisted of 17 narrative interviews with Eritrean mathematics and science teachers. The results of the narrative analysis sh…

What is ‘good’ mentoring? Understanding mentoring practices of teacher induction through case studies of Finland and Australia
2015
Mentoring is a practice widely utilised to support new teachers. However, in locally formed systems, the practice of mentoring is conditioned by traditions and arrangements specific to the site. To understand ‘good’ mentoring, these local arrangements cannot be ignored. In this article, the theory of practice architectures is employed to make explicit the prefiguring arrangements of mentoring practices in Finland and NSW Australia. The findings suggest that mentoring practices are shaped by their ontological specificity and this makes reproducing mentoring practices in different sites problematic. Explicating the prefiguring architectures of practices is critical to understanding the contes…
Exploring the Affordances of SimReal for Learning Mathematics in Teacher Education: A Socio-Cultural Perspective
2020
SimReal is an innovative technology that emerged the last few years in mathematics education. It provides new potentialities for mathematical learning by means of dynamic and interactive visualizations of mathematical concepts. This paper uses SimReal in the context of teacher education to explore the affordances and constraints of the tool for the learning of mathematics. It presents a framework that combines Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory, the role of mediation, and the notion of affordance at a technological, pedagogical, and socio-cultural level. The aim of the article is to explore the extent to which SimReal as a mediating artifact affords students’ mathematical learning in teacher …

Ausencias relevantes en la teoria del curriculum.
2020
Some significant absences are pointed out in the article about the way in which the theory has been confronting the curriculum, with special emphasis on what happene…
Reshaping Curriculum to Enhance the Relevance of Literary Competence in Children's Education06
2015
Twenty-first century learners face a multi-literacy landscape as they strive to acquire the cognitive skills needed for independent learning, apply linguistic skills to other knowledge base, and become computer literate. This article envisions a combination of skill sets and knowledge bases as the foundation of a literary competence-based curriculum. Such a curriculum would have the goal of enhancing young learners"critical thinking abilities; this would also help them take charge of the cognitive, linguistic, and sociocultural dimensions of written and spoken language in order to make learning transferable and applicable to the real world.
