This work is inspired by the accompanying report to the opinion, presented to the European Committee of the Regions and approved by a large majority in Brussels on February 12, 2020, honouring, on the day of the 40th anniversary of the assassination, the memory of Prof. Vittorio Bachelet, vice-president of the Italian Superior Council of the Judiciary, murdered by terrorist hands at the end of the lesson of administrative law at the Faculty of Political Science at the University "La Sapienza" in Rome. The sacrifice of this courageous Catholic jurist is a perennial warning of democratic civilization against the darkness of reason of those who practice hatred and violence.
Helium isotope systematics of volcanic gases and thermal waters of Guadeloupe Island, Lesser Antilles

Abstract The island of Guadeloupe is located in the middle of the 850 km long Lesser Antilles island arc. Present-day volcanic and geothermal activity is concentrated in two systems both located in the southwestern part of the island (Basse Terre): the La Soufriere volcanic complex and the Bouillante hydrothermal system, some 20 km to the northwest of the volcano. We report here the largest isotopic data set for helium isotopes in hydrothermal gases and waters from both systems, acquired between 1980 and 2012. 3 He/ 4 He ratios in the fumarolic gases of La Soufriere volcano have been quite homogeneous and stable over the last thirty years. Despite a growing research on disaster resilience, we lack research examining in systematic way whether and how local social services in the Nordic countries contribute to resilience. Macro-economic policy coordination remains a challenge in the EU. The European Semester was designed to help facilitate more coordination. In the area of wage policies, it encourages Germany and the Netherlands to support stronger wage growth, while Italy and Portugal have been told to exercise wage restraint. This paper analyses how domestic interest group politics influence how EU recommendations are received. Reflecting on the different growth models that underpin these four countries, we find that country-specific recommendations meet country-specific obstacles – independent of whether recommendations aim at increasing or reducing wages.
