Optical Performance Evaluation of DSSC-integrated Glassblocks for Active Building Façades

The paper outlines the results of a research, carried out at the University of Palermo, aimed at the assessment of the energy performance of a novel glassblock integrated with 3rd generation Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC), which, when installed into panels, allows obtaining translucent building envelopes able to provide high thermal and visual comfort levels while producing clean energy. The paper focuses on the optical analyses of four different configurations of DSSC-integrated glassblocks, carried out by using the optical design software Zemax. The values of optical transmittance, the solar factor and the electric power – calculated for each configuration – are discussed.

Atmospheric effects on extensive air showers observed with the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

Atmospheric parameters, such as pressure (P), temperature (T) and density (ρ ∝ P/T), affect the development of extensive air showers initiated by energetic cosmic rays. We have studied the impact of atmospheric variations on extensive air showers by means of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The rate of events shows a ∼ 10% seasonal modulation and ∼ 2% diurnal one. We find that the observed behaviour is explained by a model including the effects associated with the variations of P and ρ. The former affects the longitudinal development of air showers while the latter influences the Molière radius and hence the lateral distribution of the shower particles. The model is val…

Protocols have been proposed for rapid generation turnover of temperate legumes under conditions optimized for day-length, temperature, and light spectra. These conditions act to compress time to flowering and seed development across genotypes. In pea, we have previously demonstrated that embryos do not efficiently germinate without exogenous hormones until physiological maturity is reached at 18 days after pollination (DAP).
