Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is known to affect developing organisms. Utilization of different omics-based technologies and approaches could therefore provide a base for the discovery of novel mechanisms of PAH induced development of toxicity. AbstractMost northern insect species experience a period of developmental arrest, diapause, which enables them to survive over the winter and postpone reproduction until favorable conditions. We studied the timing of reproductive diapause and its long-term effects on the cold tolerance of Drosophila montana, D. littoralis and D. ezoana females in seasonally varying environmental conditions. At the same time we traced expression levels of 219 genes in D. montana using a custom-made microarray. Background Voltage-gated sodium (Nav) channels have traditionally been considered a trademark of excitable cells. However, recent studies have shown the presence of Nav channels in several non-excitable cells, such as astrocytes and macrophages, demonstrating that the roles of these channels are more diverse than was previously thought. Despite the earlier discoveries, the presence of Nav channel-mediated currents in the cells of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) has been dismissed as a cell culture artifact. Journalists’ Associations as Political Instruments in Central and Eastern Europe

This editorial provides the overall context for the five cases—three national and two international—covered in this thematic issue. While the cases are from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), they highlight fundamental questions of journalism everywhere, including contradictions between freedom and control, professionalism and politics, individual and collective. The associations of journalists serve as very useful platforms to study these questions, especially at historical turning points when the whole political system changed, as happened twice in CEE after World War II.

AbstractFacial masks may be one of the most cost-effective strategies to prevent the diffusion of COVID 19 infection. Nevertheless, fake news are spreading, alerting parents on dangerous side effects in children, such as hypercapnia, hypoxia, gut dysbiosis and immune system weakness. Aim of the Italian Pediatric Society statement is to face misconception towards the use of face masks and to spread scientific trustable information.

In fact, in Italy old age index (number of elderly per 100 persons under the age of 14 years) is estimated to be 157,7 and is projected to increase to 257,9 in the year 20651,2. Presbiopijas aditīva novērtēšanas metožu salīdzinājums

Bakalaura darbs uzrakstīts latviešu valodā uz 39 lapaspusēm. Tas satur 26 attēlus, 5 tabulas, 39 literatūras avotus, 1 pielikumu. Mērķis: salīdzināt presbiopijas aditīva korekcijas novērtēšanas metodes. Dalībnieki: pētījumā piedalījās 30 dalībnieki ar presbiopiju. Metode: aditīva stiprums noteikts ar divām subjektīvām, daļēji objektīvu, matemātisku metodēm un pēc Pointer J. tabulas. Visi aditīva lielumi salīdzināti ar gala izrakstīto aditīvu un savā starpā. Secinājumi: Matemātiskā modeļa un Pointer J. tabulas rezultāti uzrādīja atšķirības no gala aditīva līdz pat 1,50D. Subjektīvo metožu uzrādītās atšķirības no vidējās vērtības ir 0,03D un 0,06D, datu izkliede neliela, SD=0,33D. Daļēji obje…
