The structure of the accretion disk in the lensed quasar SBS 0909+532

2011

We derive the size and temperature profile of the accretion disk of the lensed quasar SBS 0909+532 by measuring the wavelength dependence (chromaticity) of the microlensing magnification produced by the stars in the lens galaxy. After correcting for extinction using the flux ratios of 14 emission lines, we observe a marked change in the B-A flux ratio with wavelength, varying from -0.67 ± 0.05 mag at (rest frame) ∼1460 Åto -0.24 ± 0.07 mag at ∼6560 Å. For λ ≳ 7000 both effects, extinction and microlensing, look minimal. Simulations indicate that image B rather than A is strongly microlensed. If we model the change in disk size from 1460 Å to 6560 Å using a Gaussian source (I exp(-R 2/2r 2 s…

Order-Order Phase Transitions Induced by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide in Triblock Copolymer Thin Films

2019

We study the influence of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) on the phase behavior of a cylinder-forming polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-b-polystyrenetriblock copolymer thin film. Solvent annealing with scCO2 can produce patterns with long-range order but these structures become unstable for thin films with small thicknesses. These results are in good agreement with self-consistent mean field calculations, which indicate that a drying transition occurs for thicknesses below the radius of gyration of the molecule. After decompression and solvent extraction, the initially swollen polymer nanostructure suffers a strong reduction in the average domain spacing, which has a deleterious effect on…

‘Experimental Union’ and Baltic Sea cooperation: the case of the European Union’s Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR)

2018

In the past, Baltic Sea cooperation has been characterized by a plethora of actors, embracing a wide range of policy objectives, such as the establishment of a good environmental status for the regional sea. In 2009, the European Council endorsed the European Union’s (EU) Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) as a new tool in the repertoire of Cohesion Policy and European Territorial Cooperation (ETC). The EUSBSR seeks to foster cross-sectoral coordination and functional cooperation in policy areas of ‘macro-region-level’ relevance, such as transport infrastructure, economic development and environmental protection – thus projecting a ‘soft space’ of transnational Baltic Sea cooperati…

Analysis of load balancing and interference management in heterogeneous cellular networks

2017

To meet the current cellular capacity demands, proactive offloading is required in heterogeneous cellular networks (HetCNets) comprising of different tiers of base stations (BSs), e.g., small-cell BSs (sBSs) and conventional macro-cell BSs (mBSs). Each tier differs from the others in terms of BS transmit power, spatial density, and association bias. Consequently, the coverage range of each tier BSs is also different from others. Due to low transmit power, a fewer number of users are associated to an sBS as compared with mBS. Thus, inefficient utilization of small-cell resources occurs. To balance the load across the network, it is necessary to push users to the underloaded small cells from …

Microstructure and rheological response of laboratory-aged SBS-modified bitumens

2019

Polymer additives are widely used to improve the performance of road bitumens including their resistance to hardening during oxidation, although their oxidative inhibitor effect has not been well documented. This study aims to investigate the effect of laboratory-simulated ageing on the microstructure, and rheological properties of Polymer Modified Bitumens (PMBs) prepared with a Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) copolymer and sulphur as a cross-linker. The laboratory ageing was conducted through the Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) and the Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) procedures. The unaged and aged binders were characterised using the Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery (MSCR) test, Gel Permeati…

Benefits of a translucent building envelope made of DSC-integrated glass blocks

2015

The aim of this paper is to analyse the benefits deriving from the replacement of the glazed façades of an office building located in Palermo (Sicily) with a new translucent BIPV envelope made of multifunctional glass block panels integrated with Dye-sensitized Solar Cells (DSCs). The analysed 11-storey building is cladded by a curtain wall determining high management costs, especially during summer, in order to maintain indoor comfort. After the design of the building envelope and of the components for the connection of the glass block panels with existing load bearing structure, the energy performance of the building, before and after the replacement of its envelope, were analysed with th…

Effect of Short-Term and UV Irradiation Aging on the Behaviour of SBS-Modified Bitumen

2022

To obtain road bitumen with improved temperature and fatigue resistance, polymers and/or rubbers could be added to it. A particularly suitable polymer for bitumen modification is styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) copolymer but limited information is available about the ageing behaviour of modified binders. In this work, two neat bitumens, with different penetration grades, and two SBS-modified bitumens, containing different SBS amounts, were selected, and their short-term and UVB ageing behaviour were investigated considering dynamic shear rheometry and Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transformation InfraRed spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Short-time ageing behaviour was investigated performing…

"Last Signification Bits" Method for Watermarking of Medical Image

2011

International audience; In this paper, we present a new approach for watermarking of medical image that we are trying to adapt to telemedicine. This approach is intended to insert a set of data in a medical image. These data should be imperceptible and robust to various attacks. It's containing the signature of the original image, the data specific to the patient and his diagnostic. The purpose of the watermarking method is to check the integrity and preservation of the confidentiality of patient data in a network sharing. This approach is based on the use the LSB (least significant bits) of the image and tools borrowed from cryptography.

Optimisation of liquid rubber modified bitumen for road pavements and roofing applications

2020

Abstract Polymer Modified Bitumens (PMBs) are largely used for pavement and roofing membranes applications with Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene Block copolymer (SBS) playing a major role in both markets despite its constantly increasing price due to the rising demand for quality bitumen modifiers. On the other hand, there is an increasing trend of recycling end of life tyres generating Recycled Tyre Rubber (RTR) at affordable price. This investigation aims at engineering a modified bitumen with a combination of Liquid Rubber (LR), a homogeneous blend of 50–70% RTR pre-processed in combination with heavy oils, and a wax denominated Ethylene Bis Stearamide (EBS). In the first phase, the effect of L…
