Exploring cell biodiversity - Neutron scattering investigation of water diffusion in complex system

2015

Scientists from biophysics, biology and medicine fields are interested in exploring and characterizing topologically cerebral tissue in order to diagnostic different diseases which affect brain in many patients [1-3]. One of the most diffuse diagnostic techniques is dMRI (diffusion magnetic resonance imaging) which extracts information about heterogeneity and asymmetries in brain tissue studying water diffusion dynamics (~80% mass constituent of tissues). The experimental limit of this technique is related to the acquisition time, TA, of the order of milliseconds. Water molecules diffuse within micrometre distance using TA as diffuse time (Eistein equation D~2TA). Cells have micrometric siz…

3D models acquisition and image processing for virtual musealization of the spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala, Rome

2022

This study was carried out within the project “Roma Hispana. Nuevas tecnologías aplicadas al estudio histórico, la musealización y la puesta en valor de Patrimonio Cultural español en Roma: la spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala” (Universitat de València Spain), which is funded by the Conselleria d’Innovació, Universitats, Ciència i Societat Digital of the Generalitat Valenciana (2020–2021) and authorized by the Sovrintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio (Special Superintendence of Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape) of Rome, Italy. The spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala was the oldest apothecary in…

Notes on Shore Flies (Diptera: Ephydridae) from Finland and north-western Russia

2015

The recent checklist of the Ephydridae of Finland by Zatwarnicki and Kahanpää (2014) mentioned 13 ephydrid species as new for Finland without further details. This paper presents detailed records for those species and a few other species of interest. Four species are recorded for the first time from Russia. Trimerina indistincta Krivosheina, 2004 is herein considered as a new junior synonym of Trimerina microchaeta Hendel, 1932, syn. nov.

Clinical and Sociodemographic Variables and the Level of Social Support in People with Multiple Sclerosis

2019

Cel.

Day and Night Control of COPD and Role of Pharmacotherapy: A Review

2020

Abstract The topic of 24-hour management of COPD is related to day-to-night symptoms management, specific follow-up and patients’ adherence to therapy. COPD symptoms strongly vary during day and night, being worse in the night and early morning. This variability is not always adequately considered in the trials. Night-time symptoms are predictive of higher mortality and more frequent exacerbations; therefore, they should be a target of therapy. During night-time, in COPD patients the supine position is responsible for a different thoracic physiology; moreover, during some sleep phases the vagal stimulation determines increased bronchial secretions, increased blood flow in the bronchial circ…

Alaraaja-amputoitujen juoksun biomekaniikka

2013

Oscar Pistorius on yksi paralympiaurheilun viime vuosien suurimmista nimistä. Valtaosassa amputaatioista on taustalla verisuonisairaus. Amputoimaton urheilija kasvattaa juo…

It takes time to see the menu from the body: an experiment on stable isotope composition in freshwater crayfishes

2015

For many applications and ecological studies in which wild individuals are brought to laboratory it would be essential to know accurately how fast novel diet is reflected in composition of different tissues. To study the effects of two different diets on the stable isotope composition of freshwater crayfish muscle and hemolymph, we conducted a three month experiment on noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) by feeding them sweet corn (Zea mays) or Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras) as novel food. During the experiment, the crayfish were given 0.4 g of selected food daily and the amount consumed was recorded. The samples for the stable isotope a…

Noiseless Quantum Measurement and Squeezing of Microwave Fields Utilizing Mechanical Vibrations

2017

A process which strongly amplifies both quadrature amplitudes of an oscillatory signal necessarily adds noise. Alternatively, if the information in one quadrature is lost in phase-sensitive amplification, it is possible to completely reconstruct the other quadrature. Here we demonstrate such a nearly perfect phase-sensitive measurement using a cavity optomechanical scheme, characterized by an extremely small noise less than 0.2 quanta. We also observe microwave radiation strongly squeezed by 8 dB below vacuum. A source of bright squeezed microwaves opens up applications in manipulations of quantum systems, and noiseless amplification can be used even at modest cryogenic temperatures.

Movescapes. Geografie del movimento fra spazio e rappresentazione

2013

This project has three main aims. First, it seeks to rethink space and spatiality from movement. To do this it follows some significant steps of philosophical tradition (Aristotle, Hegel, Heidegger, Merleau Ponty, Derrida, etc.) in an attempt to demonstrate the close relation between the movement of body and the production of space. No space would exist without an original movement producing it: the body comes out of himself, it spaces, and it is precisely in this dislocation that the spatiality is brought into being (Merleau Ponty). Bodies in motion produce space, but what happens if these bodies fall between the lines of a text or on the planes of a map? Can representational spaces hold t…
