Dispersive Evaluation of the Inner Radiative Correction in Neutron and Nuclear $\beta$-decay
2019
We propose a novel dispersive treatment of the so-called inner radiative correction to the neutron and nuclear $\beta$-decay. We show that it requires knowledge of the parity-violating structure function $F_3^{(0)}$ that arises from the interference of the axial vector charged current and the isoscalar part of the electromagnetic current. By isospin symmetry, we relate this structure function to the charged current inelastic scattering of neutrinos and antineutrinos. Applying this new data-driven analysis we obtain a new, more precise evaluation for the universal radiative correction $\Delta_{R}^{V,\,new}=0.02467(22)$ that supersedes the previous estimate by Marciano and Sirlin, $\Delta_R^V…
Measurement of η′ → ηπ+π− with KLOE and KLOE-2
2012
The investigation of η ′ → ππη allows to study ππ and ηπ interactions and the possible influence of the scalar states f 0 (600) and a 0 (980) on the decay dynamics. 1.7 fb −1 of data taken with the KLOE detector at the DAΦ NE e+ e− collider have been analyzed with respect to the charged decay mode η ′ → π + π − η . 7900 ± 90 event candidates have been extracted and can be used for a Dalitz plot analysis.
Search for Ultralight Scalar Dark Matter with Atomic Spectroscopy
2015
We report new limits on ultralight scalar dark matter (DM) with dilaton-like couplings to photons that can induce oscillations in the fine-structure constant alpha. Atomic dysprosium exhibits an electronic structure with two nearly degenerate levels whose energy splitting is sensitive to changes in alpha. Spectroscopy data for two isotopes of dysprosium over a two-year span is analyzed for coherent oscillations with angular frequencies below 1 rad/s. No signal consistent with a DM coupling is identified, leading to new constraints on dilaton-like photon couplings over a wide mass range. Under the assumption that the scalar field comprises all of the DM, our limits on the coupling exceed tho…
Search for pairs of highly collimated photon-jets in pp collisions at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
2019
Results of a search for the pair production of photon-jets - collimated groupings of photons - in the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. Highly collimated photon-jets can arise from the decay of new, highly boosted particles that can decay to multiple photons collimated enough to be identified in the electromagnetic calorimeter as a single, photonlike energy cluster. Data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.7 fb-1, were collected in 2015 and 2016. Candidate photon-jet pair production events are selected from those containing two reconstructed photons using a set of identification criteria …

Probing fast oscillating scalar dark matter with atoms and molecules
2021
Light scalar Dark Matter with scalar couplings to matter is expected within several scenarios to induce variations in the fundamental constants of nature. Such variations can be searched for, among other ways, via atomic spectroscopy. Sensitive atomic observables arise primarily due to possible changes in the fine-structure constant or the electron mass. Most of the searches to date have focused on slow variations of the constants (i.e. modulation frequencies $<$ 1 Hz). In a recent experiment \mbox{[Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 141102 (2019)]} called WReSL (Weekend Relaxion-Search Laboratory), we reported on a direct search for rapid variations in the radio-frequency band. Such a search is particu…
PainlevéGullstrand synchronizations in spherical symmetry
2010
A Painlev\'e-Gullstrand synchronization is a slicing of the space-time by a family of flat spacelike 3-surfaces. For spherically symmetric space-times, we show that a Painlev\'e-Gullstrand synchronization only exists in the region where $(dr)^2 \leq 1$, $r$ being the curvature radius of the isometry group orbits ($2$-spheres). This condition says that the Misner-Sharp gravitational energy of these 2-spheres is not negative and has an intrinsic meaning in terms of the norm of the mean extrinsic curvature vector. It also provides an algebraic inequality involving the Weyl curvature scalar and the Ricci eigenvalues. We prove that the energy and momentum densities associated with the Weinberg c…
A dynamical dark energy model with a given luminosity distance
2011
It is assumed that the current cosmic acceleration is driven by a scalar field, the Lagrangian of which is a function of the kinetic term only, and that the luminosity distance is a given function of the red-shift. Upon comparison with Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs) and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data the parameters of the models are determined, and then the time evolution of the scalar field is determined by the dynamics using the cosmological equations. We find that the solution is very different than the corresponding solution when the non-relativistic matter is ignored, and that the universe enters the acceleration era at larger red-shift compared to the standard $\Lambda CD…
Mass dimension one fermions and their gravitational interaction
2019
We investigate in detail the interaction between the spin-${1/2}$ fields endowed with mass dimension one and the graviton. We obtain an interaction vertex that combines the characteristics of scalar-graviton and Dirac's fermion-graviton vertices, due to the scalar-dynamic attribute and the fermionic structure of this field. It is shown that the vertex obtained obeys the Ward-Takahashi identity, ensuring the gauge invariance for this interaction. In the contribution of the mass dimension one fermion to the graviton propagator at one-loop, we found the conditions for the cancellation of the tadpole term by a cosmological counter-term. We calculate the scattering process for arbitrary momentum…
