NfL (Neurofilament Light Chain) Levels as a Predictive Marker for Long-Term Outcome After Ischemic Stroke
2019
Background and Purpose— Ischemic stroke causes major disability as a consequence of neuronal loss and recurrent ischemic events. Biomarkers predicting tissue damage or stroke recurrence might be useful to guide an individualized stroke therapy. NfL (neurofilament light chain) is a promising biomarker that might be used for this purpose. Methods— We used individual data of patients with an acute ischemic stroke and clinical long term follow-up. Serum NfL (sNfL) was quantified within 24 hours after admission and after 1 year and compared with other biomarkers (GDF15 [growth differentiation factor 15], S100, NT-proBNP [N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide], ANP [atrial natriuretic peptid…
Split-Window Coefficients for Land Surface Temperature Retrieval From Low-Resolution Thermal Infrared Sensors
2008
In this letter, we provide a complete set of split-window coefficients that can be used to retrieve land surface temperature (LST) from thermal infrared sensors onboard the most popular remote-sensing satellites: ERS-ATSR2, ENVISAT-AATSR, Terra/Aqua-MODIS, NOAA series-AVHRR, METOP-AVHRR3, GOES series-IMAGER, and MSG1/MSG2-SEVIRI. The coefficients have been obtained by minimization from an extensive simulated database constructed from MODTRAN radiative transfer code calculations, emissivity spectra extracted from spectral libraries, and spectral response functions of the thermal bands considered. This letter also analyzes the magnitude of the error on the LST retrieval and the contribution t…
The concept of major depression. III. Concurrent validity of six competing operational definitions for the clinical ICD-9 diagnosis.
1991
The comparative validity of six operational diagnoses of major depression was evaluated in 600 psychiatric inpatients using the independently assessed clinical ICD-9 diagnoses as a yardstick. Agreement with, and positive predictive value for the ICD-9 categories of pure (endogenous and psychogenic) depression served as validation criteria; sensitivity of major depression diagnoses for detecting ICD-9 bipolar depressions was additionally used for examining the adequacy of width, time and exclusion criteria of the competing operational definitions. Three essential results were found. First, the "old" diagnostic definitions of RDC and FDC are superior to all newer definitions because they defi…
Macro MOOC learning analytics
2020
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have opened new educational possibilities for learners around the world. Numerous providers have emerged, which usually have different targets (geographical, topics or language), but most of the research and spotlight has been concentrated on the global providers and studies with limited generalizability. In this work we apply a multi-platform approach generating a joint and comparable analysis with data from millions of learners and more than ten MOOC providers that have partnered to conduct this study. This allows us to generate learning analytics trends at a macro level across various MOOC providers towards understanding which MOOC trends are globally …
Risk of drug-related falls among noninstitutionalized older adults
2017
To determine the number of drugs taken per day, which represents a risk factor for falls among noninstitutionalized older adults with a history of falls in the last year. This was a descriptive study that used random sampling and the following measurement instruments: the WHO questionnaire for the study of falls in older adults, gait scale and geriatric depression scale and gait and balance. Univariate and bivariate analysis, nonparametric chi-squared test, and binary logistic regression were performed using the SPSS statistical program version 21.0.214 individuals participated in the study. Those who took ≥ 4 drugs presented higher risk of falling, p=0.010 OR=4.034. The same was not true fo…
Multidimensional Sexual Well-being Scale for Older Adults: Validity Evidence from a Polish Sample
2021
Here, we report the results of a Polish adaptation of the Multidimensional Sexual Well-being Scale (MSWBS) for older adults. The MSWBS is a short self-report scale for assessing the five dimensions of an individual's sexual well-being: frequency of caressing, sexual intimacy, sexual compliance, sexual satisfaction, and sexual distress. The aim of our adaptation was to examine the utility of the scale in a country with conservative views on the sexuality of older people, which will help health care providers and researchers to better understand the sexual needs of older people. The study included 507 participants, aged 60-92. We found the reliability of the scale to be satisfactory (Cronbach…
Group fitness activities on elderly: who is eligible and who is not.
2012
Introduction While it is impossible to prevent every injury, literature suggests that injury rates could be reduced by 25% if people took appropriate preventative action. On the other side, one major problem of Group Fitness Instructors is to find the right intensity/level suitable for every attendee during classes (e.g. ballroom dancing). Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the opportunity to adopt already validated function ability tests on group fitness activities with the aim to prevent injuries and maintain or increase quality of life. Methods The study was conducted with a quasi-experimental design. The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the Barthel index (BI) were administered …
Universal spectral profile and dynamic evolution of muscle activation: A hallmark of muscle type and physiological state
2020
The skeletal muscle is an integrated multicomponent system with complex dynamics of continuous myoelectrical activation of various muscle types across time scales to facilitate muscle coordination among units and adaptation to physiological states. To understand the multiscale dynamics of neuromuscular activity, we investigated spectral characteristics of different muscle types across time scales and their evolution with physiological states. We hypothesized that each muscle type is characterized by a specific spectral profile, reflecting muscle composition and function, that remains invariant over time scales and is universal across subjects. Furthermore, we hypothesized that the myoelectr…
Study of the attitudes and future intentions of nursing students towards working with older people: an observational study
2021
Background: Older people are increasing in the world leading to the fact that many nursing students will work in geriatric care setting. It was also reported the lack of knowledge and interest in working with older people by many nursing students. Therefore, the aim of the study is to explore the attitudes, wills, and intentions for the care of older people from nursing students. Methods: A sample of 383 students (mean age between 17 and 24; females: 76.2%) was divided according to the year. A questionnaire and three scales investigating the attitude for working with older persons (Kogan, Aday-Campbell, Nolan scales) were administered. Simple correlations across the three scales and the com…
Randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, multicentre study of idebenone in patients suffering from multi-infarct dementia
1992
Abstract In this randomized double-blind, placebo controlled, multicentre study on 108 elderly patients with mild to moderate mental deterioration of vascular origin, idebenone — a benzoquinone derivative with a hydroxyalkyl side chain — proved to be therapeutically effective in the treatment of multi-infarct dementia. The oral administration of idebenone 45 mg/day b.i.d. for 120 days significantly improved the scores of the following test in comparison with placebo: Mini Mental State, Randt Memory Test, Gottfries Rating Scale, Token Test, Toulouse Pieron Test, indicating improvements in memory attention and cognitivity. The drug was well tolerated and effective in patients with multi-infar…
