New Technologies for Adaptive Architecture
2019
Since the 1980s, the bioclimatic architecture has had the historical merit of having raised public and experts’ awareness on the importance of designing buildings with the purpose of solving the problem of energy saving. Nowadays, in the light of the most recent energy strategies policies, in force on an international and European scale, codified in EC Directive 31/2010 concerning the implementation of the Nearly Zer-Energy Buildings (NZEB), (Deru et al. 2006), the need for a new approach to redevelopment that focuses on environmental, climate and energy objectives with innovative technological solutions emerges, aimed at optimizing the passive bioclimatic behaviour of a building. In the wo…
Architectural technologies for life environment: improving sustainability by reusing wastes in novel geopolymeric mortars
2021
Recently, implementing construction to a more sustainable industry has become a focal point in the international debate due to the huge volume of non-renewvable raw materials and energy consumed every year, along with the significant emissions of green-house gases and global warming, often associated to the supplementing industries. Besides, valorisation and reuse of industrial wastes and by-products is a viable alternative to the traditional industrial system, becoming a compelling topic to improve processes and materials sustainability. This paper fo- cuses on the development of a novel class of green geopolymers, worldwide considered a solid and sustainable alternative to Portland cement…
Studies of the bromine spectrum and determination of transition probabilities for Br I and Br II lines
1999
In a wall-stabilized cascade arc at atmospheric pressure in mixtures of argon and bromine vapors thermal plasmas were generated. Arc currents between 25 and 60 A were used. Applying a spectrometer of medium dispersion, equipped with an optical multichannel analyzer (CCD detector), the spectra of neutral and singly ionized bromine in the range between 3300 and 10400 A were recorded. Line intensity measurements, corrected for self-absorption, at different operating conditions of the arc, were performed. A complete set of Br I transitions (5 lines) originating from a common upper level (branching fractions) was measured. In the case of the Br II spectrum intensities of 14 lines were determined…
Clinical correlates of paliperidone palmitate and aripiprazole monohydrate prescription for subjects with schizophreniaspectrum disorders: Findings f…
2020
This study, based on the 'Servizi Territoriali Associati per la Ricerca' (STAR) Network Depot Study nationwide baseline data, explored whether individual symptoms severity and clusters might influence the prescription of paliperidone palmitate 1-month (PP1M) vs. aripiprazole monohydrate. The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was used to assess psychopathology and relevant symptoms clusters. Drug Attitude Inventory, 10 items, was used to test attitude towards medications. Adherence to treatments was rated according to the Kemp seven-point scale. We assessed for eligibility 451 individuals and, among them, we included 195 subjects (n = 117 who started PPM1 and n = 78 aripiprazole monohydr…
Fluorogenic detection of Tetryl and TNT explosives using nanoscopic-capped mesoporous hybrid materials
2013
[EN] A hybrid capped mesoporous material, which was selectively opened in the presence of Tetryl and TNT, has been synthesised and used for the fluorogenic recognition of these nitroaromatic explosives.
Does endovascular treatment with curative intention have benefits for treating High-grade AVM versus radiosurgery? Efficacy, safety, and cost-effecti…
2021
BACKGROUND: The treatment of high-grade arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) remains challenging. Microsurgery provides a rapid and complete occlusion compared to other options, but is associated with undesirable morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to compare the occlusion rates, incidence of unfavorable outcomes, and cost-effectiveness of embolization and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) as a curative treatment for high-grade AVMs.METHODS: A retrospective series of 57 consecutive patients with high-grade AVM treated with embolization or SRS, with the aim of achieving complete occlusion, was analyzed. Demographic, clinical, and angio-architectonic variables were collected. Both …
Determinants and Congruence of Species Richness Patterns across Multiple Taxonomic Groups on a Regional Scale
2012
Applying multiple generalized regression models, we studied spatial patterns in species richness for different taxonomic groups (amphibians, reptiles, grasshoppers, plants, mosses) within the German federal state Rhineland-Palatinate (RP). We aimed (1) to detect their centres of richness, (2) to rate the influence of climatic and land-use parameters on spatial patterns, and (3) to test whether patterns are congruent between taxonomic groups in RP. Centres of species richness differed between taxonomic groups and overall richness was the highest in the valleys of large rivers and in different areas of southern RP. Climatic parameters strongly correlated with richness in all taxa whereas land…
Fuzzy C-Means Segmentation on Brain MR Slices Corrupted by RF-Inhomogeneity
2007
Brain MR Images corrupted by RF-Inhomogeneity exhibit brightness variations in such a way that a standard Fuzzy C-Means (fcm) segmentation algorithm fails. As a consequence, modified versions of the algorithm can be found in literature, which take into account the artifact. In this work we show that the application of a suitable pre-processing algorithm, already presented by the authors, followed by a standard fcm segmentation achieves good results also. The experimental results ones are compared with those obtained using SPM5, which can be considered the state of the art algorithm oriented to brain segmentation and bias removal.
Speech Emotion Recognition method using time-stretching in the Preprocessing Phase and Artificial Neural Network Classifiers
2020
Human emotions are playing a significant role in the understanding of human behaviour. There are multiple ways of recognizing human emotions, and one of them is through human speech. This paper aims to present an approach for designing a Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) system for an industrial training station. While assembling a product, the end user emotions can be monitored and used as a parameter for adapting the training station. The proposed method is using a phase vocoder for time-stretching and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for classification of five typical different emotions. As input for the ANN classifier, features like Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), short-te…
Automated detection and classification of synoptic scale fronts from atmospheric data grids
2021
<p>Automatic determination of fronts from atmospheric data is an important task for weather prediction as well as for research of synoptic scale phenomena. We developed a deep neural network to detect and classify fronts from multi-level ERA5 reanalysis data. Model training and prediction is evaluated using two different regions covering Europe and North America with data from two weather services. Due to a label deformation step performed during training we are able to directly generate frontal lines with no further thinning during post processing. Our network compares well against the weather service labels with a Critical Success Index higher than 66.9% and a Object Detecti…
