Channeled scaffolds implanted in adult rat brain.
2012
Scaffolds with aligned channels based on acrylate copolymers, which had previously demonstrated good com- patibility with neural progenitor cells were studied as coloniz- able structures both in vitro with neural progenitor cells and in vivo, implanted without cells in two different locations, in the cortical plate of adult rat brains and close to the subven- tricular zone. In vitro, neuroprogenitors colonize the scaffold and differentiate into neurons and glia within its channels. When implanted in vivo immunohistochemical analysis by confocal microscopy for neural and endothelial cells markers demonstrated that the scaffolds maintained continuity with the surrounding neural tissue and wer…
Semi-ResMass Study: Residual masses after salvage chemotherapy in men with pure seminoma—A multicenter retrospective analysis.
2020
420 Background: Only scarce data exist on the management of residual masses in men who have received two lines of chemotherapy for advanced seminoma. Due to the lack of data, the role of PET scanning, surgery and other additional treatments is controversial in these men. Methods: Data from men with pure seminoma and residual masses after salvage chemotherapy were retrospectively collected from 10 high-volume centers in 3 European countries. We analyzed the clinical management of residual masses (imaging, surgery, pathological data, and additional treatment modalities) and long-term outcomes. Residual mass was defined as a lesion of ≥1 cm after two lines of platin-based chemotherapy. Result…
A new methodology for Functional Principal Component Analysis from scarce data. Application to stroke rehabilitation.
2015
Functional Principal Component Analysis (FPCA) is an increasingly used methodology for analysis of biomedical data. This methodology aims to obtain Functional Principal Components (FPCs) from Functional Data (time dependent functions). However, in biomedical data, the most common scenario of this analysis is from discrete time values. Standard procedures for FPCA require obtaining the functional data from these discrete values before extracting the FPCs. The problem appears when there are missing values in a non-negligible sample of subjects, especially at the beginning or the end of the study, because this approach can compromise the analysis due to the need to extrapolate or dismiss subje…
Universal newborn hearing screening in the Italian Region of Sicily in 2018
2021
We have clarified the role of Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening (UNHS) for both early diagnosis and rapid treatment in order to improve the prognosis of the deaf child and reduce patient management costs. Although in Sicily UNHS has been progressively implemented, there is scarce data in the literature on this matter. Therefore, the main objective was to collect in the year 2018 the following data: number of newborns screened for hearing loss, number of infants "referred" to transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE), number of infants with pathologic auditory brainstem response (ABR) and number of infants affected by permanent hearing loss.UNHS monitoring was conducted through the…
Intrepid or Invisible? Female Characters in Catalan Children's and Young Adult Literature
2019
This article analyses 95 children’s and young adult literature works written originally in Catalan and published between 2002 and 2006. They are representative of all age groups present in this genre. This analysis focuses on the presence or absence of female characters, and on their treatment and reception, both in terms of prominence and the transmission of stereotypes. The results of this review show a dichotomy between the scarcity of female protagonists and their extreme audacity.
The Origins of Environmental Assessment
2016
Looking back through the course of history, it is indeed possible to find many different forms of “environmental assessment” that relate to a clear, unifying philosophy: to consider the impact of such practices before they are implemented. The most important difference that is clearly prevalent in more recent instances is the consideration of the environmental component in the assessment process, which can be straightforwardly be attributed to an increasing awareness within the modern society of the ever-growing scarcity and the cost of natural resources combined with the resulting quality of life for current and future generations. Focusing on the origin of modern ecological assessment, th…
Unequal access to food during the nutritional transition: evidence from Mediterranean Spain †
2020
Unequal access to food is one of the main issues in nutritional history, but scarcity of sources has hampered the quantification of this phenomenon. This study uses hospital diets to address this gap. It uses records from between 1852 and 1923 concerning hospital diets in the psychiatric section of the Hospital General de Valencia (Spain), from which it is possible to infer the actual intake of nutrients for six groups of patients and members of staff. The results reveal considerable differences in terms of diet and nutrition. While the most favoured groups (nuns and well‐off patients) had by 1852 reduced their relative intake of cereals and increased that of meat, in line with the general …
Da Corleone a Palermo. L’estensione della produzione di cereali e l’approvvigionamento della capitale durante la crisi del 1646-1648
2019
The chapter focuses both on quantitative data and on historical microanalysis of a XVIIth century scarcity in Western Sicily. It highlights especially the relationship between the Corleone production area and the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily, Palermo.
