How Hosts Taxonomy, Trophy, and Endosymbionts Shape Microbiome Diversity in Beetles.
2019
Bacterial communities play a crucial role in the biology, ecology, and evolution of multicellular organisms. In this research, the microbiome of 24 selected beetle species representing five families (Carabidae, Staphylinidae, Curculionidae, Chrysomelidae, Scarabaeidae) and three trophic guilds (carnivorous, herbivorous, detrivorous) was examined using 16S rDNA sequencing on the Illumina platform. The aim of the study was to compare diversity within and among species on various levels of organization, including evaluation of the impact of endosymbiotic bacteria. Collected data showed that beetles possess various bacterial communities and that microbiota of individuals of particular species h…
Encriptación óptica empleando llaves Weierstrass-Mandelbrot
2013
[EN] This paper presents the generation of encryption keys using the local oscillating properties of the partial sums of Weierstrass-Mandelbrot fractal function. In this way, the security key can be replicated if the parameters used to obtain it are known. Therefore, these parameters can be sent instead of sending the key. This procedure reduces the amount of information to be sent and prevents possible interception of the key. Moreover, the key can not be affected by data loss or pollution. The effectiveness of the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot keys were demonstrated by computer simulation in a 4f optical encryption system and the double random phase encoding technique. These keys allow us to enc…
Globally convergent adaptive and robust control of robotic manipulators for trajectory tracking
2004
This paper deals with a globally convergent adaptive and robust control of robotic manipulators for trajectory tracking in the presence of friction modelled as static nonlinearities. Two control loops are designed according to the cascade control scheme: (a) an inner adaptive control loop, which includes computed torque and PD control actions and friction compensation and (b) an outer robust control loop for unmodelled dynamics compensation. With reference to item (a), two friction compensation schemes are presented; one of them uses both the reference and the actual velocities, whereas the other employs only the actual velocity. Experimental tests carried out on a two-link SCARA manipulato…
Remote control within the UJI Robotics Manufacturing Cell using FPGA-based vision
2007
In this paper we present a work in progress of a new remote control system based on networked robots and FPGAs technology. The experimental validation has been carried out within the UJI (i.e. the acronym for University Jaume I) Robotics Manufacturing Cell. The main devices included in this Cell are: a SCARA manipulator (AdeptOne), a robot arm with six degrees of freedom (Motoman), an industrial belt, several sensors and cameras, an FPGA that takes care of the computer vision algorithms (i.e. including grasping determination), and a distributed architecture that allows any user to control remotely via Internet a specific manufacturing task. The different components of this system are connec…
The UJI industrial robotics telelaboratory: Real-time vision and networking
2008
In this video we present a work in progress in the UJI (i.e. the acronym for University Jaume I) robotics telelaboratory. This telelaboratory uses a remote control system based on networked robots and FPGAs technology. The different components of this system are connected by a 100BaseT Ethernet network and …
Hypnosis, Animal Magnetism, and Monstrosity in late Nineteenth Century English Literature
2019
We will explore the literary image of animal magnetism and hypnosis through the analysis of two works of fiction: the novels Richard Marsh’s The Beetle: A Mystery (1897) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897). During all the 19th century and mainly at its last, many authors used animal magnetism and hypnosis in their fictional creations in an environmental or plot way, so much that Arthur Quiller-Couch, an important literary critic of the nineteenth century, spoke about the emergence of a new literary subgenre that he called “hypnotic fiction”. Starting from the idea that in this mesmeric and hypnotic fiction literature you can clearly trace differentiated stereotypes of magnetizers and hypnotist…
Gastric insufflation pressure, air leakage and respiratory mechanics in the use of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) in children.
2004
Summary Background : The objective of the present study was to evaluate the prelaryngeal position of the laryngeal mask airway (LMATM) in children, and to determine the influence of mask positioning on gastric insufflation and oropharyngeal air leakage. Methods : A total of 100 children, 3–11 years old, scheduled for surgical procedures in the supine position under general anaesthesia were studied. After clinically satisfactory LMA placement, tidal volumes were increased stepwise until air entered the stomach, airway pressure exceeded 30 cmH2O, or air leakage from the mask seal prevented further increases in tidal volume. LMA position in relation to the laryngeal entrance was verified using…
The lamellicorn beetles of southern Sardinia (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea)
2011
A faunistic inventory of lamellicorn beetles has been conducted in southern Sardinia (former province of Cagliari) based on literature and collection records, as well as on new fi ndings from recent fi eld expeditions (2003–2008). The taxonomic analysis of the study area revealed the occurrence of 105 species (2 Lucanidae, 2 Trogidae, 7 Geotrupidae, 1 Hybosoridae and 93 Scarabaeidae). The majority of families are represented by 100% of the known Sardinian fauna; o nly the Scarabaeidae, the most diverse family, is represented by 80.8% of its Sardinian members. Some considerations are made on the conservation status, trophic categories, chorotypes, habitat distribution and seasonal activity o…
Males influence maternal effects that promote sexual selection: a quantitative genetic experiment with dung beetles Onthophagus taurus
2003
J.S.K. was funded by the Academy of Finland, L.W.S. by the Australian Research Council, J.H. by an Australian Postgraduate Award, and J.L.T. by a postdoctoral research fellowship from the University of Western Australia. Recently, doubt has been cast on studies supporting good genes sexual selection by the suggestion that observed genetic benefits for offspring may be confounded by differential maternal allocation. In traditional analyses, observed genetic sire effects on offspring phenotype may result from females allocating more resources to the offspring of attractive males. However, maternal effects such as differential allocation may represent a mechanism promoting genetic sire effects…
