Disentangling the complexity of low complexity proteins
2020
Abstract There are multiple definitions for low complexity regions (LCRs) in protein sequences, with all of them broadly considering LCRs as regions with fewer amino acid types compared to an average composition. Following this view, LCRs can also be defined as regions showing composition bias. In this critical review, we focus on the definition of sequence complexity of LCRs and their connection with structure. We present statistics and methodological approaches that measure low complexity (LC) and related sequence properties. Composition bias is often associated with LC and disorder, but repeats, while compositionally biased, might also induce ordered structures. We illustrate this dichot…
Salivary proteomic biomarkers of oral squamous cell carcinoma
2015
Objectives. The aim of the present study is to investigate the presence of proteomic signatures of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) in saliva and their use as potential biomarkers for early and non-invasive diagnosis, as well as prognostication. Methods. Saliva from 45 OSCC patients and 30 healthy controls was analysed by SELDI-TOF mass spectrometry and ProteinChip® technology. Proteomic profiles were tested with differential expression analysis and fold change of protein peaks, principal component analysis, Spearman rank correlation test and hierarchical clustering in order to identify a list of peaks of interest representative of controls, N- and N+ cases. Those peaks were used in a su…
Les prédicteurs en grande section maternelle de la réussite en lecture en fin de première année de l'école primaire : l'impact du nom des lettres
2009
A number of variables predicting the success or failure in learning to read has been presented in the literature. Investigations, however, aiming to evaluate the impact of these factors in multivariate models are rare, particularly in French, and do not take into account participants' individual and social characteristics. In this perspective, a longitudinal study, comprising 199 students, was realised from kindergarten through first grade. The results show that, among all the variables studied, the naming of consonants and vowels in kindergartens is the best predictor of ackowledging both decoding letters and written comprehension at the end of the first grade. A discussion furthers the im…

Ce cro-magnon qui est en moi !
2022

Attitudes toward everyday odors for children with visual impairments: A pilot study
2010
The question of how the processing of stimuli from the external world is organized or reorganized when a sensory modality is altered or missing has been the subject of numerous studies, although the studies have mostly been on tactile and auditory abilities (Hatwell, 2003). In contrast, olfaction has been poorly investigated in people who are visually impaired, despite the increasing evidence that humans have a keen sense of smell (Schaal & Porter, 1991). Odors influence mood; well-being (Ehrlichman & Bastone, 1992); and social interactions, such as the choice of partners (Herz & Inzlicht, 2002). Emotional and social implications of odors go back to the earliest periods of development (Scha…
CAMLearn : a semantic context-aware recommender system architecture : application on m-learning domain
2015
Given the rapid emergence of new mobile technologies and the growth of needs of a moving society in training, works are increasing to identify new relevant educational platforms to improve distant learning. The next step in distance learning is porting e-learning to mobile systems. This is called m-learning. So far, learning environment was either defined by an educational setting, or imposed by the educational content. In our approach, in m-learning, we change the paradigm where the system recommends content and adapts learning follow to learner's context.
