Robot Personality Design for an Appropriate Response to the Human Partner

2012

International audience; This paper discusses the importance of modeling personality for social robots. While human-liked features (such as voice, gestures, and postures) are well-studied in social robotics, developing robots with personality traits is still very much in its infancy. In this paper, we show and argue the importance of embodying personality in the robot's behavior so as to provide a more natural interaction and a more appropriate feedback to the human partner.

Generalizing novel names in comparison settings: Role of conceptual distance during learning and at test

2017

International audience; In a comparison setting (two stimuli), we tested 4- and 6-year-old children’s generalization of novel names for objects. We manipulated the semantic distance between the two learning items (e.g., two bracelets versus a bracelet and a watch), and the semantic distance between the learning items and the test items (e.g., a pendant versus a bow tie). We tested whether smaller semantic distance between learning items would lead to more taxonomic (vs. perceptual) choices at test, than broader semantic distance during learning, especially in the case of distant test stimuli. Results revealed main effects of learning distance, of generalization distance and that only childr…

Young learners’control of technical animations

2008

International audience; This chapter deals with the effect of user control on learning from technical animations. First, the concept of user controllability is explored and possible reasons for the varied research findings concerning its effectiveness in supporting learning are considered. Second, an empirical study is reported in which young learners studied the operation of gear systems from animated instruction featuring different levels of user control. Finally, results of the study are discussed and related to processing constraints that may influence the educational effectiveness of user controllable animations.

An investigation of maintenance mechanisms in working memory through phonological similarity and word length effects

2009

International audience; While in Baddeley’s Working Memory model (Baddeley, 1986), the maintenance of verbal information depends on the availability of an articulatory rehearsal mechanism, within the Time-Based Resource-Sharing model (Barrouillet et al., 2007), it depends on an attentional refreshing mechanism, i.e. on the amount of attention available to refresh traces. The interplay of these two mechanisms, the articulatory rehearsal and the attentional refreshing, was investigated in two experiments, one in adults and one in 7-year-old children. In both experiments, within a complex span paradigm, the phonological similarity of the words to remember (similar vs dissimilar), the articulat…
