Investing in a PhD : Human capital or cultural capital ?
2005
The first part is mainly devoted to the study of the theoretical positions of Gary Becker and Pierre Bourdieu, the main theme being the vision of education as a capital. The notions of human capital (Becker) and cultural capital (Bourdieu) are presented, compared and criticised, each one being replaced in its theoretical context. The second part is devoted to empirical analyses concerning the PhD. We first try to assess the monetary return on a PhD. Then we look for the reasons why people pursue study at doctoral level, knowing that the monetary return can not by himself explain this decision. The PhD appears mainly as a way to work in higher education and public research. More than human c…

Developing Lower secondary education: a rural issue and challenge for sub-saharan Africa
2010
The ongoing progresses of coverage of primary education in Sub-Saharan African Countries are inevitably to impact lower secondary education in a significant manner. Beyond the need for all countries to identify a global policy to deal with the problem, it is important to understand that expansion of coverage of lower secondary education will concern rural populations since coverage is generally already relatively high in cities while it is lagging noticeably in rural settings; many schools will need to be built and operate in a near future. A basic characteristic of rural schools is that most of them enroll only a limited number of students and, in current circumstances tend to cost signifi…
Actualité et nouveaux développements de la question de la reproduction des inégalités sociales par l'école
2003
In France since the seventies, as in most industrialized countries, the sociology of education has ammassed a certain amount of resultts concerning the processes that constantly create social inequalities in school. This paper presents an overall picture of the main most reliable results in this field. Firstly, we have discussed the individual mechanisms, followed by the contextual mechanisms involved in creating social inequalities, in France today. While the former actually limit possible action on the part of the school, the latter underline, on the contrary, the school's scope for action in this field.
New Educational Society. The Illich’s Utophy
2011
The aim of this article is to consider the power of school system based on Ivan Illich’s (1926 – 2002) thoughts. This article is based on a doctoral research in which Ivan Illich’s work on modernized poverty was analyzed systematically by an immanent reconstruction concentrating on his most essential books published in the 1970s. This article, however, focuses on his book Deschooling Society (1971), and represents systematic analysis of its school-related criticism. Furthermore, the researchers’ interpretation on the interconnectedness of Illich’s core concepts is introduced as the ultimate result. Illich’s purpose is to show that the society is extorted into a form of school and that we al…
